This was great! Two things I'm wondering after watching it: 1- Landing on the 3rd sounds great at each key change, but what about when playing A minor pentatonic over A major? Do you play that minor 3rd anyway (C), or stick to the 1 and 5 (A&E). I'll go find the answer by trying :-) 2- In the final solo, I'd love to have seen labels (or just heard them called out) when switching between scales. This would help me duplicate, and build association with the sound.
@@danwoods4269 for the first question I usually either hammer on from the minor third to the major third or slightly bend the minor third and back to the root note A. Just playing the minor third (c) does clash with all three chords. That can sound bluesy by adding the major third by bending or hammering on. And yes great idea to call out or text on the screen the chord changes and the scale I’m using with that chord! The biggest thing is make a connection from the cord to the scale that you are using. I did not do that early on and it took me decades to grasp! If you start doing that now you’ll never regret it! Thanks for leaving this great comment and have a good week✌️
THIS IS MUST LESSON for all those who want to learn soloing. I wish II had started with major chords instead of with blues chords . I had spent two whole years on trying to solo in blues and not getting no where. Don’t get me wrong I love the blues but I wish I had started on a lesson like this then moving onto the blues. Thank you Rusty. Your teaching is direct , inspiring and you explain everything so well. I just wait for your solos at the end of your lessons..and spend days taking them apart just to some more of you. Truly inspirational music.

A good rule to follow is the low/high rule... Start out low and move your solo upwards as you go and finish on a high bend or vibrato-note. This builds tension in the listener's ear. The other thing to keep in mind is that speed playing sounds more interesting when you set it up with more lyrical lines. If you play fast all the time with no space in your playing you'll just bludgeon people to death sonically. I see this in Nashville a lot. Some incredibly advanced technical players who just can't "shut up" for lack of a better term. To qoute the late/great Lowell George who had to scold bassist Freebo once during a session.. "space is a place". 🤘

You almost have Look ahead at the changes. So you can start looking at your next set of notes before the chord change happens. Not an easy task!!! try to do it every day with everything that you are playing and will start to become second nature. But I still have to work on this every day myself and always want to get better at it. So you really never arrive but just try to keep getting better each day! Very helpful. An eye-opener for me was finding out that progression was in D. LOL. I would have said A. Knowing it's in D allows you to play up the neck on that Dmaj scale. Learn something new every day. Thanks!

Thanks for the comment Paul! Yes you can definitely use the strategy over a 145 progression! I will do a Lesson on this topic! Using the chord tones in each chord and applying it to the major and minor pentatonic scale will work over almost any piece of music! You hit it right on the head for me. I wish your were fairly close to Tupelo, MS, I'd start taking private lessons from you. You've a get gift of articulating that other channels don't.
I wish I would have seen this video sooner! As someone who struggled through the process of what am I supposed to do/learn/practice this video does a really good job hitting the key points. The most important thing in my opinion is practicing in different keys with different scales and figuring out where the root notes and key notes are (chord notes/3rds/7ths whatever) that you want to highlight specifically for the mood of what you're playing. To me, that is how you really develop your voice and allows you to be more comfortable letting what you hear in your head flow out of the instrument. HAVE to get the muscle memory down. The phrasing comes with even more practice once you're fingers know what they are doing and you don't have to think about it much or at all.

Great tutorial Rusty! Very nice playing. The major pentatonic is not often used in my phrasing. But it's still interesting and beautiful to use. Rusty, this is truly an OUTSTANDING LESSON! 🎸. You asked to let you know where we are in theory… I have a basic understanding of theory and using the 1-4-5 progressions, also blending in the Aeolian 6th that is the ‘Natural Minor’ of the 1 Ionian..I know the caged system and that you can work it like a conveyor belt depending on where you enter… But I did not understand fully how the pros build their licks and play over chords , this helps immensely! I have a request, seeing as I just subscribed, I hope you don’t mind my request… The request, …How to blend the major in minor over major blues Major going back and forth. I have some idea but I have a feeling you can take me to the next level of understanding. THANK YOU! So glad I found you… I saved this great lesson! BTW, Modes 2-5… Dorian, Phrygian,Lydian and Mixolydian are still very vague in how to use for me. I know that the 2- Dorian and the 5-mixolydian are used quite a bit in blues… and that Mixolydian is something that Jerry Garcia with his major minor blending used a lot!

Soloing and improvisation has always been my Achilles heel on guitar. I know all the pentatonic shapes and how to find them in major and minor, know most of the CAGED system, triads, sixths, 7th chords etc. but I always get lost when coming up with a solo and end up playing the same licks

That's how great '70s solos sound. Is there a genre today using these sounds (except for TH-cam music)? 🙂

I wish I would have seen this video sooner! As someone who struggled through the process of what am I supposed to do/learn/practice this video does a really good job hitting the key points. The most important thing in my opinion is practicing in different keys with different scales and figuring out where the root notes and key notes are (chord notes/3rds/7ths whatever) that you want to highlight specifically for the mood of what you're playing. To me, that is how you really develop your voice and allows you to be more comfortable letting what you hear in your head flow out of the instrument. HAVE to get the muscle memory down. The phrasing comes with even more practice once you're fingers know what they are doing and you don't have to think about it much or at all.

Rusty, this is truly an OUTSTANDING LESSON! 🎸. You asked to let you know where we are in theory… I have a basic understanding of theory and using the 1-4-5 progressions, also blending in the Aeolian 6th that is the ‘Natural Minor’ of the 1 Ionian..I know the caged system and that you can work it like a conveyor belt depending on where you enter… But I did not understand fully how the pros build their licks and play over chords , this helps immensely!
I have a request, seeing as I just subscribed, I hope you don’t mind my request… The request, …How to blend the major in minor over major blues Major going back and forth. I have some idea but I have a feeling you can take me to the next level of understanding. THANK YOU! So glad I found you… I saved this great lesson!
BTW, Modes 2-5… Dorian, Phrygian,Lydian and Mixolydian are still very vague in how to use for me. I know that the 2- Dorian and the 5-mixolydian are used quite a bit in blues… and that Mixolydian is something that Jerry Garcia with his major minor blending used a lot!

Soloing and improvisation has always been my Achilles heel on guitar. I know all the pentatonic shapes and how to find them in major and minor, know most of the CAGED system, triads, sixths, 7th chords etc. but I always get lost when coming up with a solo and end up playing the same licks
