I'm not a huge Adam Sandler fan and I am a huge Warren Zevon fan...but Adam truly blew me away with his cover. He doesn't do a straight-up imitation but he sings in a way that's seriously respectful of Warren's original. Check out "Enjoy Every Sandwich", the tribute album that was produced after Warren passed...some great stuff.
Werren's version is goofier and more light hearted. I can you think this bland cover with the back up singers doing the oh oohs in perfect harmony to be more light hearted. The song was never meant to have that level of perfection.

Sandler is VERY underrated. His goofiness overshadows his talent and he has it in spades.
Punch drunk love is one of the greatest dark comedy/super hero movies I’ve ever seen. Wish he was given more serious projects.
