    I was excited to actually see you using digital art to supplement the painting creation process. I did this when I had a hang up on a painting awhile pack. I was half way through and wasn't sure on my next move, and being a digital arts major I took a picture and then used my drawing screen (screen not tablet) although I've used tablets, to paint it as I would have on canvas and it helped me to finish the painting as I could erase what I didn't like and add what I wanted without touching my real paints. In the end bringing together several photo's digital helped me to create my finished piece. Nothing like canyon water scene which is intimidating might I add.
    I highly suggest anyone who hasn't bought a tablet already to consider some of the many screen tablet options out there as they are much cheaper then cinteqs these days. I loved being able to paint directly onto my digital canvas rather then have to move my hand hidden from my eyes. Both can be great but on screen drawing is amazing and by far I think the best tip for any aspiring digital/acrylic/oil painter. I really appreciate your work Andrew and am glad I found you on youtube. Your work is beyond inspiration and makes me jealous each time you paint. I know I'll get there someday but your work really is something else.

    I am a digital painter. I work in Corel Painter 2016. I learned by watching natural-media artists such as yourself and applying it to the digital realm. I strive to make my digital art look like classic oil paintings. I design my own brushes and textures which helps me achieve the look I want. Watching you paint has been a true education in brush work.

    Sponsored content tends to rub me the wrong way. I get itchy when i'm being sold something.
    That being said, I'm so happy when an amazing creator like you creates sponsored content, Andrew. I love the idea that you're being paid for something I get FREE access too. Your videos give me little tid-bits (and big tid-bits) that I implement in my process and career consistently. Thank you for all of your awesome videos.
    I still b*tch and moan when I hear you advertise something, but deep down inside, I'm grateful for it all.

    • @AndrewTischlerArt
      @AndrewTischlerArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, I only advertise things that I use and personally believe in. But I appreciate your comments. If I don't use the product, and I don't think its great for others, and it's a bad company with bad ethics, I won't promote it. I used Skillshare in the past, and will again in a heartbeat. It does help me keep the content FREE and these sponsors keep me doing what I do. Thanks very much to each and every one of them!

    • @ottogillen9113
      @ottogillen9113 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wasn't trying to be a debbie downer with my comment, just wanted to share the contrast between how I essentially dislike the sound of an advertisement and how quickly that feeling dissipates knowing that you and a few other creators get your just deserts from good sponsors.
      More importantly, I should have made reference to the point you made above, because you made it very clear in this video how you use skillshare and how it benefits you... and not by simply stating it, but by showing it in action. I am convinced that I would benefit a lot from studying with their service, the same way I benefit from studying your videos.
      Thank you for your reply, Andrew. Your videos and artwork mean a lot to me.

    Great advice...I think many ..even some artists on TH-cam have no idea of "composition," its amazing to me that many don't even know color theory. The beginners don't know and recognize it and follow along. Your advice on always learning...especially self taught is needed. Beginners buy the Edgar Paynes composition book or any one and learn the basics of composition...I see some with two paths..a road ..and a stream...then a fence included ..even a horizontal road within the same going from left to right in the foreground...leading out of the picture...oh I can keep going...

    • @kirkwilliams6938
      @kirkwilliams6938 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could not agree more. Most artist have no idea on design and composition. I've been a graphic design and at director for over 25 years.... those skills translate great to the painting world and seem to me what most artist are missing. It's not just about painting a "pretty" picture. They masters are so incredible because of how they captured their viewers.... much much thought and process and even mathematics went into their work. Today, someone picks up a brush and makes a mark and they call themselves artist.

    Hello there I am new to your channel and I love seeing you paint. I'm a digital and traditional artist as well, and I'm trying to get back into practicing my art more and more. I have been working so much over the years that I have left art behind which made me feel a little empty at times. Now I'm working on creating new art and practicing again. In my opinion I don't think you needed that harsh comment about learning Photoshop in "38" minutes. I always think when you learn a new program learn it for what you need it to do, you don't have to know every single detail to produce good work. When I started learning Photoshop over 15 years ago had no one to teach me and I was able to make pretty decent work one my own. As time went by I was able to see what I can do with all the different blending modes that layers can do, how to create brushes, using transform tools etc, and my painting skills got better and better as time went on. Also I feel that everybody has a different learning curve as well, what can take someone years to learn someone else can learn in a shorter span. I loved how your digital painting came out on this video, keep up the wonderful art. I'm so glad I found you on TH-cam, you motivate me to do better.

    If you want to try a more realistic digital painting platform, you cannot go past Corel Painter, formerly fractal painter.
    Corel merely purchased this pgm and have added over the years.
    It has incredible and nearly realistic systems, rather than just brushes, to emulate most types of medium, from oil paints to fine pencils, even magic markers. They also sell compiled 'brushes' that do amazing fx and tricks, but as a painter, it is far superior to photoshop. It does all PS does and then goes 1000% further. It is also available as a one of purchase, if you dislike the subscription stuff adobe pushes.

    This is how I do all my portraits. I sketch them on photoshop and use a projector to project the image onto a canvas that I then trace with pencil. It makes it a lot easier to move things around if you get the composition or proportions wrong, kind of like your portrait video where you had to paint over it to fix the face . In Photoshop you can just move things around without needing to redraw or repaint them all over again

    • @AndrewTischlerArt
      @AndrewTischlerArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, not a bad method....BUT I still prefer to draw the images up by hand, and then make corrections by hand. It just feels better. The only issue that could come up with projecting is tracing in any distortion of the image, if the image is not square on. Cheers for the comment. :)

      But yet if he painted what we liked it wouldn't be what he envisioned. My neighbor and painter friends do this to me all the time. They look at my works and try to put things into a painting or I should add this and that. I generally hand them the brush and say, there you go, put it in then. That generally stops it.

    your videos seem to show you at being successful at almost everything. of course it is an illusion. Would love to see you discuss painting failures...and "fixing" a painting to point of losing it or losing what painting had ...and accepting failure. As well the reality of having to make a lot of bad paintings to get to the success part. Growing and learning. Thanks

    @mattheweble5550 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Andrew. First, let me say I have been checking out your vids for quite some time as well as bought all of the digital tutorials you've offered thus far. They have certainly helped me along the way. I have considered myself an artist my whole life, but in different mediums. I am still fairly new to painting since I started within the last 3yrs or so. Even newer to oils since it has only been a year since I started with that medium. Which I enjoy so much. Even though I consider myself a novice painter, I don't think I'm half bad, lol. Somewhat decent I hope.
    I am writing though because I have been doing the same technique as well, using photoshop to make my base reference. Though, I don't have the tablet to draw on. So I actually use photoshop for well, manipulating photos. I have close to about 22 or 23 years of photoshop experience using the different versions. I do do both creating reference as well as digital art. I entered one piece in a contest a few years ago and I was disqualified because they didn't think the work was mine, lol. I proved it and ultimately they let me into the contest, but by that point it was too late because no one really got to see what I did. The one thing I will say, and this is from experience on countless times, watch how ambitious you get in photoshop. I am sure you do, but I know it's extremely easy to go very ambitious and then when you go to draw/paint the piece, you have to take a step back because you went crazy in the first step, lol. You've been painting for a lot longer than I so I'm sure it's no biggie for you...I know for me, I still have to go back and "dumb" it down a little bit, lol.
    Anyways, fantastic work and I love how you paint. Certainly has helped me quite a bit along my journey. I look forward to your next videos.

    • @AndrewTischlerArt
      @AndrewTischlerArt  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew, thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it. But watch how ambitious I get in the beginning? Nope NEVER! I won't keep ambition in check. It's the fuel for the fire. I am using this as a tool to take the image further, and aid the design. But, I do hear you. It's just my philosophy to go hard or go home! Now, if I run into trouble painting, I will just have to suck it up and get better at painting!
      I appreciate your comment though, and thanks for your support!

    • @mattheweble5550
      @mattheweble5550 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew, lol. Ambitious is always good and it's a great philosophy of go hard or go home. Just when you were talking about being ambitious in photoshop, I started reliving some of my past nightmares that got me into trouble, lol. And get better at painting? You're already halfway decent ;) lol.
      In all seriousness, continue with the great work, man. Myself and I'm sure quite a bit of others are looking forward to it.

    • @matijavuk6223
      @matijavuk6223 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      dunno If I understood that overly long message quite right but what I think he wants to say, keep it painterly, show brush strokes etc (in digital) just like you do in your traditional work :)
      Don't go for full realism where it looks like real photography.
      And yeah, it would be silly to hold your ambition down :D

    • @mattheweble5550
      @mattheweble5550 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matija, no, that's not what I was saying at all. I was being a smartass about my mistakes in the past about being to ambitious when setting up a reference. Which I'm pretty sure he got, lol. You totally missed the mark, man, lol.

    This is a particularly good tool if you are working for Pixar animation...however, when you have an initial, brilliant, or inspired idea, the first sketch or strokes of paint are the true expression of the experience. From the moment of this initial encounter with your canvas, every stroke has the possibility of becoming increasingly stale. How many of my own paintings have lost the "buzz" from overworking? More than I can count! ( I Do, however, love your work Andrew. You are truly gifted.)

    Digital tools are useful but...as a Painter that has worked in the VFX industry I think this can be a time waste if you don't put some limits to what you do with it, it is possible to spend hours and hours doing digital versions, that you could also do painting and using those same Digital principles but applied to the canvas. Again use the tools but dont get consumed by it. If you are a painter, spend more time on the easel and less on photoshop. Just my humble opinion. I love your work and channel Andrew.

I've really only been using my iPad Pro and Apple Pencil to touch up any images I've had concerns with, and even then not really - seriously - using them with my art at this point. Still, watching this particular video has really seemed to touch a nerve in me. One which will hopefully drive me not only to work more in the digital field, but to delve more deeply into my overall oil painting work in general, as well. Hopefully... (!!!)

      With a full desktop computer or all-in-one like the mac's tend to be, they save space and provide a much better quality screen and size to work with. The tablets provide a much scaled and pixel dense pad to draw with for finer levels of drawing that can draw light or thick lines based on pressure. You can go so far as to get an external monitor/drawing screen and draw directly onto the screen with the same precision with many various hot keys designed to aid in creation of digital art. An ipad and a stylis will never be the same thing. They do function similar mind you, but they don't have the 2000+ pixel per inch density of a real brand like wacoms do. You would definitely be surprised at how fun they are with that precision.

    • @johnhunter743
      @johnhunter743 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The iPad Pro with the apple pencil is perfect, I used expensive Wacom tablets with powerful Macs, but completely switched to the iPad. Even though the technical accuracy of expensive Wacom tablets is better, you don't notice it enough in real life, the Apple Pencil is already super precise and you can paint accurately whatever you want, there's nothing more that you need. The upgrade to a "professional" setup is absolutely not worth it, and much less fun to use. The only reason to upgrade would if you HAVE to use desktop software or want a bigger screen, but iOS painting software can handle virtually anything and the 12,9 inch iPad should be more than enough, unless you don't use the zoom function

    Cool.... but why not do this composition planning with initial oil sketches and over painting and changes of the actual artwork? This way you are practicing what you actual want to get better at - oil painting! Being as you are already a great painter I can see this might speed things up (and save expensive paint) but for a beginner like me ....might not my time be spent more efficiently painting?
    By the way thanks for the videos they have been most helpful!

      its hard to constantly change and overpaint traditionally , you are adding color layer on layer all the time + waiting time to dry

      I think the majority of the issues that come up with painting are not material based, but perception based. I think if one could see from the outset the direction that the IMAGE needs to go, then painting becomes the means by which that vision comes to life. It's about exploring an idea first. I think it could help a great many people.
      Of course, nothing can replace being able to draw with a pencil, and being able to wield a brush, but in terms of design and layout, this process is super fast and fun! Thanks for your comment! :)

      First Andrew thank you for your lessons on youtube, People with all respect to all the artists in the world look at Photoshop as another tool that's all it is look at it as another paint brush a new pencil to help you develop your idea. It has helped me a lot with my composition in my paintings because you can move things around in my thumbnails it saves me time using the layers in adding and removing colors it's just another tool for developing your ideas. Thanks again Andrew!!

      Photoshop is made for photos, too many actions required to do things, anime studio, (for me) flows and gives me the same ability as photoshop but in less clicks.

    So according to some comments, we shouldn't use modern technology? ie the Wacom Tablet? How about not using projectors, light boards or even light bulbs for that matter. Where does your idea of technology start/stop? How stupid.
    I don't think Andrew has "mastered" Photoshop in the way a lot of you think. Photoshop can do tons of stuff. He's pretty much just sketching. A child can learn to use a tablet in no time. And if you've been painting and drawing your whole life, you'll be able to pick up the concept a lot faster like Andrew has done.
    Using a table as a tool is a FANTASTIC way to achieve your painting goal. I know, I use one too. Before that I used projectors, the grid system... it just depends on the subject matter for me.
    There are many drawing programs out there that'll work just fine for sketching too. You don't need to spend a bunch of $$ on Adobe Photoshop. Adobe is finally losing it's monopoly on these kinds of programs. (Thank God)
    Now I have to do both. Because one thing digital art cannot do - is give you the fine smell of Linseed Oil. Mmmmmmm! ;-)

    Be careful that your painted projects don't just end up looking like renderings of your digital work.

      All considering Photoshop, Corel Painter, and many others have all been around for 20+ years. Their interfaces have all stayed fairly consistent. It's no more difficult then getting onto the internet and browsing Facebook for the first time. And using a pen tablet although an extra piece of hardware, makes it seem like there is no disconnect between you and the software you are using because no one uses a mouse for digital art. It truly is much easier then you'd imagine.

      When you already know how to draw and paint it is relatively easier to pick up on a new tool (like photoshop, marker or whatever ) so in 40 minutes with a good teacher or tutorial or just experimenting you can get quite a good result. You don't have to know everything about photoshop to be an expert on painting with it. Just like you don't have to know everything about your pen to be a writer. Don't mind harsh comments Andrew, you have a lot of good staff here. And this digital painting looks amazing!

    • @PhotohackLovers
      @PhotohackLovers 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes your ad does, you advertise for "some tutorial site that claims its possible to be a master at digital art in 38 minutes, you said you got your skills from the tutorial site which insinuates you learned all that you know in under 38 minutes. let me be frank its 100x times harder to draw or digitally paint in Photoshop it takes years of practice to master the digital world, I am an expert in the digital painting industry and trust that it didn't take me 38 minutes try over 15 years. You need very expensive equipment and a computer that has specs in the price range of 2-8 grand.

      I went to college and have a masters degree in digital art @agate banska on top of that i have over 15 years experience. I have been drawing since i could walk and it is not as easy as you claim. Everyone thinks that until they actually experience it.

      This is great, I don't know why anyone would have a problem with it. The old masters used all of the tools at their disposal and a team of apprentices to creat masterpieces on an industrial scale. Tools don't make art, they just help the artist to be more creative. Great videos Andrew, keep 'em coming!

      There's always been a segment of artists, and I suppose human nature, saying do something a certain way or it's not legitimate. Norman Rockwell used photography extensively when it came along in his day, and he wrestled with whether it was "cheating" but he decided it made him better. I've never had an opportunity to use today's digital tools. Andrew, I was amazed in this video at your final digital image! I'd love to see a side-by-side comparison of a digital image and a final painting. Are they different? Does it matter if they're not different? Obviously you created both, just different mediums. Does the consumer prefer one more than the other? You clearly put your heart and soul into your art and your teaching. Your skill plus your attitude is the spark that inspires me. I plan to purchase my first tutorial from you soon! Thanks Andrew!
