Finally I hade the chance to do a multilingual video project with this awesome hero. He is such a nice and talented person and he's inspired many people in the language learning community. It's fine if you criticize me, because it's always my goal to improve. Everyone stay safe.

Richard Simcott is a great guy. I've met him at some conferences and chatted with him in online groups. He is down to earth and is a real people person. He is most talented but remains humble which is an exceptional quality.
His Spanish's level is impressive. I had never met a foreigner who spoke it this well

I speak Italian and Spanish really well with very little foreign accent, but he smashes me to pieces. I have mad respect for this bloke! He's a Brit as well like me which only means it is even harder for him than most. Absolute kudos.

I'm a Spanish native speaker and I've taught Spanish for 8 years in Australia. His Spanish is absolutely spot on. He sounds like a native Spanish man from Seville (southern Spain). It's very impressive. Congratulations to this guy!

Wouter, a small tip, in some cases you don't use "para" but "de", like in "Estoy muy contento de hablar contigo". Para is a word to express purpose, goal or benefit; Estoy aprendiendo español para leer, escribir, escuchar y hablar muy bien el idoma; Este libro es para ti, amigo. You did not ask for my piece of advice, but it can be useful to any. Thanks for the good work you are doing.
Here are my thoughts on accents and learning highly inflected languages:
1. I remember the summer after high school, I had the opportunity to travel to Bavaria on an exchange program for six weeks. I already spoke German at a very strong C1, possibly even C2 level by that time, but I still had a faint American accent. But then... I noticed that the locals smile differently from the Americans. So I decided that I would smile the way they did while speaking German, and... my American accent disappeared basically overnight. No one had to know I wasn't German unless I wanted them to. I would have to actually speak English to prove to them that I was not German.
2. I stumbled on what is now my go-to strategy for language learning kind of by accident as I was learning Polish. I was basically doing it by brute force. This was back in the days before the Internet, so the only way I had to learn at home was to memorize Bible verses, looking up vocabulary and grammar in a dictionary and a copy of "Teach Yourself Polish" as I went. I chose the Bible because it was a book I already knew quite intimately in English.
Later, I realized that what I had done was create a framework for myself by figuring out what structures there are in Polish and what they permit you to express, which later, when I undertook formal study in Polish, made it very easy to "hang" the details in their appropriate places.
So now, if I am undertaking a new language, I will try to get hold of a textbook that contains all of the main grammar points and read the whole thing through in one day. Why one day? Because the point is not to get the details, but rather the overall logic of the language. I have done this with Chinese and Koine Greek in particular.
In the case of Koine Greek, my aim was not to be able to write the language, rather just to read it. So what I did after reading the grammar book through was take a Koine Greek-English interlinear edition of the New Testament and start reading one chapter a day. It took a bit under the year to finish the whole thing, and by the time I was done, I no longer needed the interlinear to understand what I was reading without using the dictionary much at all.
In the case of Chinese, I had a very old textbook where every second vocabulary word had something to do with the Communist Party, so I knew I wasn't going to be using it to get vocabulary. However, it did contain excellent information about pronunciation and grammar. So what I did was read through the book. And in so doing, I came to understand that Chinese grammar boils down to sentence patterns that serve various functions, and that what I was going to need to do is go through the book, extract these sentence patterns and learn them.
Once I was finished doing that, I simply started writing in Chinese - making liberal use of a dictionary - with an online friend. I also had another Chinese acquaintance who later told me that my Chinese was grammatically correct and at least understandable to a native speaker. No doubt it is not elegant, but who writes any language elegantly after learning for only three months?
I can chat in Chinese if my chat partner is extremely patient, as it can take me a good 15 minutes to decipher what they have written and build my reply. But apparently the results are not bad at all...
While we are on the subject of Chinese, I have had essentially no issues with pronunciation. For one thing, I am a trained musician with absolute pitch, and for another, I used to live in a house where a lot of Chinese people would come to visit, so I got used to seeing the typical mouth shape used while speaking Chinese. I of course carefully duplicate this mouth shape while speaking Chinese myself.
But to this day... I have not managed to find an efficient way to learn characters. It's not even that I don't understand how they are built. No doubt this means that I learn more effectively than I might otherwise. But it's still a far cry from the efficiency with which a native speaker of Chinese would learn a new character. So if anyone out there has any ideas, I'm all ears...

I thought the same thing! I'm an American with friends from Brazil and lived in Porto for a year. I got goosebumps when he switched from Brazilian Portuguese to Portugal Portuguese.

The accent thing is meaningless. If you can speak the language, whether you have an accent or not makes no difference.
@@titteryenot4524 I dont agree. Of course the most important is that you are able to make yourself understood. But to really sound proficient and gain real trust and respect from native speakers, a good accent is key.

Perfect Italian, he has every reason in this world to be proud of it
But we have to mention that the pronounciation of Italian is one of the easiest ones among the European languages. It's just like saying as reading it. Just like Spanish, Dutch, German, Norwegian etc. Try to speak Danish like a native speaker! That's a challenge! :D

Anyway pronunciation besides, Richard sounds Italian and I assure you it’s not something you hear every day, I talked with immigrants who’ve been living in Italy for 20/30+ years and I was still able to hear they weren’t born here, while this guy talks like a mate of mine

@@shyde6482 it's not like saying that at all. Nobody mentioned "I don't care and don't appreciate it" - it was a simple extension of mine and it's simply true... E.g. I heared him speak Hungarian as well (which is a really hard language in every aspect) and I didn't even understand most of the words he was trying to say in that language. That shows a slight difference even if you don't "like" it. I've never heard anybody speak that language without accent or making grammar mistakes if he/she was confrontated with the language as an adult first. If you show me someone who can, you're both my guests for a coffee and a nice chat. 😊

The most stunning is that he has no accent in multiple languages,for anyone who speaks more than 4 languages knows how it is to speak even one perfectly.
You can first see how Wouter truly gets how good Richard is at really speaking another language and its perfect accent when they switch to Dutch and he can't stop grinning and is shocked. Such a great moment

Great video, Wouter, it's nice to see long conversations where you get to use several languages that you speak for a few minutes. Switching between many languages for a short time is very, very difficult, and I also struggle not to confuse several close languages. At least when speaking a language for more than one minute, it helps your brain get all the vocab and grammar back. Thank you for this video and for encouraging language learning!

Niet iedereen spreekt immers ABN, zoals in Hilversum. Sterker, de meeste mensen doen dat niet. Zijn accent klinkt heel Nederlands in mijn oren. Zijn Engelse oorsprong zou ik er niet uit halen als ik hem op straat zou spreken of zo. De naam "Rotterdam" spreekt hij ook uit met een licht Rotterdams accent, wat hem juist nog meer als een 'native' doet klinken. Daarnaast articuleert hij in ieder geval beter dan veel Nederlanders zelf. 😅
Over zijn woordenschat kan ik niet oordelen, daarvoor is dit gesprek veel te kort. Ik vind hem super indrukwekkend in zijn talenkennis en uitspraak.

What I also like about languages is to get a word on a more real level. Such as "surprise"; it has to do with "rise", suddenly overcome something. Other languages add to these true images and also show unexpected similarities of words. Such as "to sleep". In Norwegian "bed" means "senge" or so, so it has to do with "to lower" but not only physically. And "to sing" also relates to that (a deeper connection). The Norwegian word for "to sleep" also goes back to "sober" ,something like being clean also rings with that. And "ship" actually goes back to "to skip" but not only in the sense of "to leave something outside of something" (which is how a ship looks like if you draw such a thing...an area (land) with something left outside of it) but also with "to let out", to release. And in Norwegian ship even means "skip". Then there is other things such as the Norwegian word - while looking quite differently on paper - for "fan" sounds just like the German word for it "Lüfter" when you speak it. Or their word for vegetable is the same word that is though only used collaquially in German, Grünzeug :).

I'm half Dutch and half German and I'm impressed with both of his languages. Both without a heavy foreign accent, even the typical Rotterdam accent

Simcott has very good accent in every language. His French sounds like a first language. Too many polyglots on TH-cam show off but sound off. They all speak second languages. Simcott speaks first languages all the time. He has a true gift.
As a german and spanish native speaker I have to say that his pronunciation is on point, besides some words with the "z" sound in spanish like "cabeza" or "construcciones" his pronunciation is perfect and his german made me speechless too. Crazy impressive

@@tabularasa_br Steve is talented but I would not say he is "fluent as if it were his mother tongue" in many other languages like Richard and Luca (he even claims in his interviews that he forgets many words/even some languages over time). As for Tim Doner, he kind of disappeared ever since going viral quite some years ago, so I don't know enough about him know to say anything. I respect highly both of them though and aspire to be like them in the future.
Don't forget Vladimír Škultéty, he's definitely up there as well! :)

This guy is a genius in terms of polyglotism, especially accent-wise. I'm a native French speaker, so I can only speak without any doubt for the French accent, but apparently (judging by other comments) he's so good that it is litterally impossible to guess he's English, if not foreign, for any of the languages he's using in this video.

Interesting that his Spanish is not only good but regional, his Spanish is Southern (I wouldn't say Andalucian for sure) because he doesn"t pronounce the final "s". I personally train myself to Argentinize my Spanish.
Regarding French (my native language) his accent is perfect, there are just a few words pronounced a lilttle bit differently (video for example) but that's all.

i believe that quality goes over quantity, i think speaking 20 languages is not impressive unless you have a higher level of it.
