  • Today we got a special guest Merle Swaggart doing his version of an open root plate test. He is welding a 1/2" plate using the stick welding process. The root and hot pass will be welded with a 6010 rod and the fill and cap will be with a 7018 rod!

    It amazes me how simple your welding tests are in the states here in chinada where only allowed a wire wheel no removing any metal. You have to have a backing plate and you have to demonstrate atleast 2 stop and starts your root gets visual inspection for undercut and on your hot pass your not allowed to go up and down only side to side as the up down traps slag and destroys the structural integrity of your weld and the once you finally get your cap on you get choose either bend test or x-ray test always choose the bend test because if they find any slag on the x-ray test fail if your plate bends into a perfect U with no cracks and no slag spots over 1/32 of an inch show on the back side of the bend you pass

      No it’s just one of the test. They test you on many things.

    • @bobbyblair6862
      @bobbyblair6862 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, that's a totally different test. We do that as well. Backing plate tests are gravy compared to open root.

  • @johnsimms818
    @johnsimms818 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When I took my test many years ago we didn't get to set up the test plates ( the inspector did ) and all passes were done with 7018 and no grinding allowed. Hand wire brush ,scratch awl and chipping hammer.never strike the slag with the hammer .

      The up then down side to side is the T-technique for 6010 or also for 6011 leaves a nice stack of dimes if done correctly.

    How do you know what pattern to use when making your 1st pass? Do you do circles, whip it &come back, or left right then move up? How do you know what to use or when to use what pattern?

    • @MRJ37
      @MRJ37 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do a whip and pause like going back and forth into your puddle or you can just run a straight bead root pass by just going straight no weaving you just gotta go a lil slower to fully stitch the sides and get full penetration.

    On criticism I have is the way you set up the root. If you run a heavy 1/8th land and gap, you can run the root at 90 amps like the rest of the test. It's a much easier way to do it in the field. I'm not climbing down off a scaffold to change my heat every time I need to run a root.

      Dont get hang up about the amps just keep a tight arc and wet in the toe of your welds. And each machine is different and some can show a different amperage then its actually putting out.
