Good video. My employer is giving us 2 weeks of stick welding training. Yes, 2 weeks and I've never welded in my life. We're taking the bend test at the end of the 2 weeks 😥
This is some good info but you basically showed us that you are a good welder. Unless you can see the puddle and how the rod movement is actually feeling and speed it’s taking to do it then it leaves a gray area. Some people learn a lot better by seeing it done rather than being told. People need to be able to see it just like you are seeing it from under the helmet view
Great instruction and experience but please experiment with a darker filter plate. I could not see the manipulation of the electrode very well. Thanks, KW in SC
What was your amperage? I know you mentioned the amperage for the 3/32’s rod but what about the 1/8th rod, I’m running about 115-118 when I run 1/8th and was curious to where you ran yours
Was trying that in a class recently . Vertical weld of a fillet. I am too unsteady trying to stand in front of it. I was better when I had my left elbow on a nearby post and my left hand holding my right hand with the stick in it.
You sir are doing it the way I do .I will always position myself steadily to a level of comfort before striking and depositing with stick. Its excellent practice to ghost your direction or mimic what your going to have to do before welding..more times than not guys will get themselves in a pinch and have to tie in where they haven't intended on timing in at or lose their positioning and make a mess quickly. Im a red sealed Journeyman welder by trade with 17 years fabrication and oil related experience
Hi really love the video It helps me a lot !!! Quick question… Do you let the rod touch the material or do You keep it just off ?? Gr Mikey from the Nederlands
Alot of useful tips. However I don't think you can weave that wide per ASME Sec. 8 pressure vessel and boiler code. This is still great information about technique and weld placement.
ARC LENTH, ROD ANGLE(!), and travel speed my friend. Gotta find the sweet spot. Keep practicing and you WILL find it! You MUST FAIL time and time again in order to achieve greatness. .be somebody. .be different.
Push the rod right into the groove and keep the arc really tight and move it slowly. If you watch the weld pool you'll see it filling the sides as you move up , try to maintain a steady speed so the sides of the weld spreads. Undercut can also be from slightly lifting the rod as you move it, when that happens you'll hear a different sound and the weld pool will get smaller. So the best thing I found is to push the rod in and maintain a slow steady speed letting the weld pool fill the sides as the rod moves up. Hope this helps.
Your final 5 passes have a ton of under cut and the layers arent tied into each other. If that was my D1.1 3G test plate...they would have failed me. I wouldnt even be allowed to put a cover pass on that.

You both made an excellent point about learning both stringers AND weaves! Excellent video!

Nice welds but I would have failed for arcing on the plate
do tiny triangles for the first bead and then half circles as the next ones and also use the remote for best outcome
Christmas tree's & half moons an old welder i knew called that method ......
really good explaination ,, good job Chucky , thnx JRG
Thanks for the videos but would like some better arc shots so we could see what is actually going on under the hood.
I had no idea ³/¹⁶ was less than a quarter. Learn something new everyday.
Seriously...
Ang galing mo boy thanks
Really nice welds!

I run 120-135 amps (1/8" 7018) depending on the machine. It'll also vary depending on the operator (via travel speed, arc length, etc.).
98 is the money partner 🤙🏻
One thing I would like to know is when is a backing strip allowed in a test plate and when does it have to be an open root?

Very nice
I'm using Flextec 350x and wondering what should my other settings be at? Hot start; 0 to 10 and arc control; -10 to +10
Arc strikes on the face fails the test
Kinda stupid don't you think?
Depends on where the coupons are cut....well for the school I go to.
Yep. Arc strikes are some of the worst defects you can have.
Yes he said that...
Hi really love the video
It helps me a lot !!!
Quick question…
Do you let the rod touch the material or do
You keep it just off ??
Gr Mikey from the Nederlands
Whichever way starts the most reliably for you, just practice and it gets way easier. Best wishes!
The one to the right it's pretty darn close
This video gave me flash burn 😅
I can do that weld...I want to know more...thanks for the infos
Having table running vertical global drippy how fast or slow. Ur welds look great but I've only done stick for three days practice beads

I love everything about this video except for the arc shots
Improve the visuals for the audience for better success 🙌🏽❤️
Chucky are you back?
Can u tell me how to do up hill with out having undercut?
You’re either, too hot, moving too quickly, or both.
Slow and steady wins the race

Hold your sides for a 1 Mississippi count. Spend no time in the middle. Your toes will fuse perfectly and the weld will maintain a flat profile
Arc strikes outside grove

That’s exactly what I thought
What amp are you using
👍
Just interested, why the backing plate?
Per test specs. It calls for backing strap.
❤
nice
Very nice
I’m struggling with my tops on these tests they always look terrible and I’ve tried different rod angles and everything can someone help me
are you using run off tabs?
Dont worry. it Gets cut off on a test anyway.😁😁😁
Why not bend that plate boss
Bro your building is not visible well
Root restarts 😅
Trump is God!
Why are you not using 1/8 rod . Structural 1inc plate should be 1/8 rod. Not supposed to use 2 different sizes rod.
Um yeah I was told you can in my first year welding from a real old timer with 45 years experience
Nothing says you can't per D1.1
Sure you can unless the one giving the test says you can’t
If you knew what you were talking about then you would know that there would be a WPS to go by 🤷♂️
