    I am 78 years old now but for more than 40 years of welding repairs on heavy equipment the 7018 low hydrogen rods was what I used mostly

    Nice control, cannot remember the last time I did an open root 7018, at least for work. Here at home my fit ups aren't always ideal and neither is my rod supply, so occasionally I do stitch together some healthy gaps like this, but not for such a long pass. Very clean job and nice filming too, thanks.

    Its easier with 2.0mm 7018 rods but u cant weld so far.... Can't understand why somebody criticizes this, so smooth moves and one nice root pass. If I do some 2.5 rod I'm gonna go with 60 V-Groove and 1,5mm root face. Cheers mate. Torilla tavataan. :)

    • @jeffs.5882
      @jeffs.5882 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Marco The Welder 6010 is a fast freeze rod. Low tensile strength though. It's good for penetrating through rust or paint or anything else that you may not be able to get at to clean. It's also great for really thin ,old stuff that doesn't have any minerals left. Then you can cap it with 7018. Pipefitters use it on a root pass sometimes on low pressure piping.

    The AWS suggests that 7018 does not get as much penetration in a root pass as 6010 does, but that looks like it has the desired penetration. Nice.

    • @kf8575
      @kf8575 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not as much penetration, no. The hydrogen content in the flux of a 6010 rod gives it the hotter arc and better penetration.
      But a 7018 or 7016 root is MUCH stronger deposit that a simple 6010, by a big margin too👍

    Get some 7016. They are a low hy rod actually designed for all passes, specifically root passes. Rather than a 7018 which is designed for fill and caps.
    Also, DCEN gives a more controllable pool.
    Lastly, start ahead then drop back to crater, pause then continue your run. Any low hy rod run without starting ahead and coming back will leave porosity in every start.

    Attis, Thank you for posting this video! You got the filming angle just right for us newbies to see exactly what needs to be done. I am in welding school here in Mexico and the instructor just move us to 3G/4G with 7018. I am going to practice with your technique tomorrow but I want to ask you if you suggest the same technique for overhead or if you suggest some changes. Thank you for your help!

    • @attisk1779
      @attisk1779  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your reply.
      Overhead open root I would have almost straight angle with rod.
      And you really must push the rod upwards to get a nice root.
      What kind of a welding machine do you have in Mexico??

    • @bryzeng
      @bryzeng 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Hello Attis, I am using a very old Mexican ISSA brand machine, It is a transformer type machine with no bells & whistles, just a big crank for amperage. The current indicator is completely faded so I have to set the amperage by feel. The arc is nice and stable though.
      So for overhead, would I still do the slight weave and pause like in the video and then push the rod into the open root?

    • @attisk1779
      @attisk1779  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Supercritical Yes little weave and more pushing and straight or almost straight rod angle. These are my advices, hope it helps you.

    • @bryzeng
      @bryzeng 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I did the vertical up plate today and beside a bad start with too high amperage, once I adjusted down it worked like a charm! I will weld the overhead plate tomorrow, Thank you so much for your time and advice!

    • @bryzeng
      @bryzeng 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Hey Attis, I have been trying to do the overhead plate but I cannot get it right for the life of me. I've tried all sorts of gaps and shoulders but no matter what I do I never get enough penetration. The slag ends up where the weld should be, about 1/16 over flush (on the back side) but once cleaned, I have about 3/32 of sunken bead. It is driving me insane, but our instructor insists that this is the actual test for a lot of the shipyards here. Also, he won't let us any other that 1/8 rod.
      Do you have any advice on this situation? I would really appreciate any help you can give me.

      Ben Saunders hey there, to answer that question since nobody did id say 80-85 amps i tested it myself and over 90 was a little too hot for it. this man was pretty slow surprisingly he didnt blow a hole so my best bet is 83 amps

      He is welding it with a handheld remote control To control the amps. So he starts probably around 85 To 90 amps, then lowers the amps as he welds.

      Comments and info in general. Rod size, gap, thickness of material, type of material, application, ect . I am learned to weld on my own, do some part-time work, dumpsters, sea boxes, truck racks w/1 1/4 pipe, backhoe and loader buckets, and misc. items for a plumbing company. I only use 6010, because that's what I was supplied with and what I learned with. When I have played around with 7018 I have a hard time with the slag. Watching I only hope to learn. Thanks

    • @attisk1779

      Richard Harms rod size was 2.5mm, cap was also 2,5mm and material thickness 8mm.
      Here we dont have a 6010 electrode, so we use 7018 for root, fill and cap.

    what kind of amperage are you using here? and its sort of hard to tell but are you angled up at all or just straight at the plate? and great job by the way. Ive always done this weld in school with a 6010 root, 7018 fill and cap but i have a job test tommorow open root 7018! i thought that that was somewhat bizarre its obviously possible tho! thanks in advance for your video and any advice!

    • @attisk1779
      @attisk1779  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I dont know my amperage, I use remote hand control when I weld so I dont have to think about amperage. Yes I have slightly upward angle. You can see that you are getting a good penetration, when there is a small hole burning ahead of your bead. I hope this helps you good luck to your test and thanks for your comment. :)

    whats the HAZ like when welding like this? that plate looks pretty damn hot. I normally use 6010 for my roots, but i would like to give this a try. Looks useful for applications that require lohi

    Not a lot of spatter, I think that's the fist stick weld I've seen that is not throwing out heaps of spatter. How do you stick with only a little spatter?

    • @Gmiller0907
      @Gmiller0907 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      7018s in general tend to have low spatter and a fairly smooth arc. To keep your spatter down across the board, use adequate, but not excessive, amperage. With some aggressive rods like 6011, it can be tricky though.

    • @steve4675
      @steve4675 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If splatter is your issue, your rod moisture is probably too high. Keep the rod in a hot box or rod oven until needed. Humidity reeks havoc on 7018.
