  • Unlimited Hot water for your 4x4
    Parts links below!
    This week I am discussing how I put a hot water system under the hood of my 4x4, and maybe inspire you to do it on your truck as well. There are plenty of hot water systems sold, but they tend to be bulky and don't fit well in a smaller rig, for example, the Fj Cruiser. Taking showers, cleaning up after a big dinner, or spraying off the dog are a few examples of why you would want an unlimited hot water supply in your 4x4 truck. Lets dive into it.
    Note that this water system can get HOT. You would have to walk away from it for quite a while to reach extreme high temperatures, but if you do this you are doing it at your own risk. Use common sense adn this can change your comofort level on the trail.
    PRIMARY PARTS LIST. Measure your vehicles hose diameters, as yours may be different than mine! This is not a complete kit, every variation will require a trip or two to the hardware store.

    One of the things you can do is on your coolant side from the engine run that line off of the outlet Side of the Heater core for the heater and then you can use the reg heater dials to adjust for temp control..

      That's an interesting thought! I hadn't considered that!

    I really dig how it’s versatile and you could use on board water or local river water depending on what’s available. Super compact which is really nice too. As always thank you for sharing your time and wisdom Tyler. 🍻

    If it gets too hot just have another bucket of cold water to top up your main bucket to suit. Turning the engine off once its up to temperature is a good idea to keep it safe. Having the spray head is also a great idea for the reasons you already mentioned.

    If you add a tempering valve into your plumbing set-up you will h e able to control the temperature

      It works really well but isn't efficient. I recently bought the Geyser system and love it due to sure simplicity and convenience. I can get it out and have hot water with much less hassle with the Geyser. But this system has it perks!

    super interesting setup! seems like a way better alternative to have one of those huge "solar shower" tubes, I'll probably look into seeing if I can have some kind of temperature regulation for it...

      Yeah I’ve never had room for one, and quite frankly my roof is heavy enough. 4 gallons up top is a lot of sloshing weight. Temperature would be fairly difficult, just because it takes a bit to warm up. Might be best off using a stick on thermometer on the bucket perhaps.

    Neat idea for sure.

      Works pretty good, it could be perfected, but I wanted to keep to simple. Coolant leaks are no fun in BFE.

    I built a Copper Heat Exchanger but it was huge. I have heard good things on the vevor , but How many plates? 30 or 40 ?

    • @IndependenceOverland
      @IndependenceOverland  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think mine is a just a 20 plate if I remember correctly. Not too overly large. Whats vevor?

    Hey Tyler, where in the coolant plumbing did you tap into to run to the heat exchanger?

    This is bad ass. The Joolca is very unreliable.

    • @IndependenceOverland
      @IndependenceOverland  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Damn, sorry to hear that. May I ask what issues you’ve had? High elevation or just ignition issues in general? I was actually planning on one for the next build.

      @@IndependenceOverland I was really excited about the Joolca and bought the entire kit with the sink, etc. I've tried it a few times in a variety of environments as has my buddy. Each of us have had ongoing issues keeping the water pressure perfect enough for the Joolca to run property. It's very hit or miss. I have a Road Shower that I pressurize with a electric pump that I feed into the Joolca. Every so often you will get one hot shower, or one load of dishes. But it's so unreliable I rather not go through the hassle of setting it all up, taking up space, just to have it fail or kinda sorta work. There's plenty of little leaks with all the fittings also.
      At the end of the day, I prefer boiling water for dishes and I cold plunge every morning so if there's water, I'm getting in.
      I think if I added an automatic pump that constantly regulates the pressure inside the Road Shower it may work. But Independence Overland's set up seems WAY simpler, so will probably scrap the Joolca and give it a go.

      @@collinbeggs7383 I’ll be interested to hear how you like it. Your Joolca experience makes me wonder if I should do a deeper dive into my current system and try to improve it. Thanks for the info Collin!

      @@IndependenceOverland That would be cool. And I know I'm not the only one with a similar Joolca experience. It's one of those items that looks great, but performs very poorly in the field.
