  • Let's take a look at the new MPC X SE (Special edition).
    It's an updated version of the Mpc X with more ram and storage and the beautiful retro colorway. It's not called the MPC XL despite the rumours online.
    A quick overall look at the unit, a few soundbites of some different presets and my thoughts on this new version of the X.

    You're right that this MPC version makes sense as Akai needed to update their flagship product. And their 35-year anniversary is definitely a good moment to launch this retro version. Which have become very popular on the other MPC models.

  • @TheActualJae

    Firstly, great video! Good overview and some straight talk on it's target market.
    But man... I used a Live II for several years before having to switch back to Ableton because I just needed more than 8 audio tracks. Which I hate but... I mean, I also kinda get it. The device is for sampling and making beats and that's not exactly where I'm at musically (I record a lot of synths and guitar stuff). But I just love the fact these things are so frigging cool looking and I love how I can step away from a full "mouse and keyboard" computer experience (even with the Push 2, Ableton requires some M+Kb).
    Maybe they'll broaden the scope of the software at some point and I'll be able to make use of an MPC again. I will admit, if I come back, I want one of these!!
    Looking forward to more videos with this thing!! 😊

    • @AccurateBeats
      @AccurateBeats  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your perspective! I totally know what you’re saying. There are really no hardware devices out there that can compete with a fully fletched DAW setup when it comes to recording audio tracks, editing, arranging and all that… A DAW will always be more flexible and powerful. For someone like me, letting go of the computer really changes my creative process a lot in the best way possible.
      Hopefully, we’ll see some sort of arrears that can compete with a linear DAW sometime but I guess that’s somewhere in a galaxy far, far away 😂

  • @lostinjazz
    @lostinjazz ปีที่แล้ว +45

    I was hoping for a bigger upgrade. I think it would have been cool if they would have released an XL instead. To me this looks like another controller with integrated computer if that makes sense. Put in some analog filters. Give different options when it comes to the sample engine like ISLA did with the S2400. There‘s a ton of potential but zero innovation tbh. People are looking for analog options to color their sound these days instead of loading more plugins. You can proof this by checking the tons of guitar pedals people are buying these days. I guess it‘s more important for AKAI to additionally sell more software expansion packs and plugins to load within their echo system instead of innovating the creative scene. Just my two cents atm.

    • @Terrible_Peril

    Gave up my MPC touch in 2020. Software was always unstable and crashed a lot. Bought a push 2 and went with Ableton. Steep learning curve, but the ability lay my loops out into a song without exporting to Pro Tools and also use my plugins of choice (without back door hack) is amazing. I do feel like the workflow of MPC lead me to some dope tracks. But a loop isn’t a song. Abelton just makes it so easy to finish tracks.. I do miss the pad size and how quickly I could move through ideas with MPC. Also the time warp wasn’t great from what I remember. Alas, I still think I’ll get a stand-alone unit again one day. Great review man!!

    I'm glad they called it a Special Edition. There isn't much to justify an upgrade for someone who has the X. 2 extra gigs is great for people whose production relies heavily on the use of the plugins. But for those who sample, this is not a real game changer. Also, the expanded internal memory is another thing that makes no sense to me. I don't wish to store all my sounds in a "black box" I don't have control over. I'd rather store my sounds and projects on SD cards and SSDs. I was hoping more for a software upgrade than what we got today.
    The colors are dope, though, I'll certainly give it that! Thank you for the coverage, Accurate!

  • @R41NES
    @R41NES ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I think for me this is a lazy upgrade but probably very smart from Akai’s point of view, it’s certainly a great way for them to use up all their old stock pilled components by making the minimalist of changes, adding a new colour and giving it an extra couple of letters after its name. I think the 35th anniversary is just an excuse to do this. Doesn’t even have the Ethernet port.
    48 GB of storage, I mean you could have just as easily made it 64GB for probably no extra, 48GB is a very odd number for storage.
    So does the clock start ticking again for the Akai MPC X SE or does it continue the same as the MPC X making it still a 7 year old product.
    I’m sure there will be lots of gear heads who collect MPC’s that will buy this, but for the average user who already has an MPC X and the plug-in suite even a Live MK II user is this enough of an upgrade to warrant spending $2400 on essentially 2GB RAM, 32GB of extra storage, a colour change, and a different badge. You can buy a 32GB SD card for a few bucks.
    I can’t speak for anyone else but I totally feel disappointed, I was hoping for a new flag ship with game changing specs, it’s been 7 years rocking the same old device ,same old outdated components.
    It’s not like this machine give us anymore audio or plug-in tracks or anything like that.
    As the old saying goes “ you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig”
    So now the question is when do we think there will be any actual new upgrades MPC’s?
    PS: I prefer the black and red MPC X, the black buttons on the MPC X SE should have been a different colour.

    • @mike-pm6xn
      @mike-pm6xn ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You pretty much nailed it. Akai has been doing tiny little "upgrades" forever. I was hoping for something new. Maybe not necessarily game-changing things (but would've been nice) but at least something we haven't seen before in the MPC line. Anyone can add RAM and storage to anything - BORING. Akai is definitely lazy but after Roger Linn left it just hasn't been the same.
      No innovation... To me, it just feels like they're sweeping up an old floor every time. Yeah Akai, it's great you cleaned the floor but it's the same floor.
      Great saying - “you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig”
      If we had to nitpick, I agree on the button color. I think the black should've been grey, to mimic the original MPCs (which is what they're trying to do) more closely.
      Another nitpick is I've never been a fan of how the screen sticks out further than the back. Just wonky design to me. But I digress.

    • @AccurateBeats
      @AccurateBeats  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I love passionate comments like this! I totally see your point in that it would’ve been awsome to get something completely new and an MPC that’s different from anything we’ve seen before. Time will tell if we’ll get something like that but this is an incremental update… In my MPC live II video, I made a parallel to how Apple sometimes just makes smaller upgrades to their phones and I think that’s pretty much how we should look at this special edition of the X too. Not too groundbreaking but not worthless either.
      Seeing the comments on this video is so interesting; some people hate it, others loves it. As this is my first MPC X, I’m really impressed by the unit as a whole but sure… Not the most exciting thing that’s ever happened.
      Thanks for the comment! Love it!

    I don't know. For a flagship product and knowing the memory available, I would expect more. Even 16 GB of ram seems weak these days for a laptop, and 4 GB is like a 20-year old PC. Also, a flagship recording studio centerpiece needs disk streaming for recording and sample loading. Finally, the screen is nice but again it is sort of small given modern touch screen dimensions. I get it though. If the screen were larger, where would they put it? I think I will stick with my Live 2 and Force for now. They are about right-sized, though I wish the screens would tilt up.

    a lot of MPC X owners are hating on this thing.
    I don't own an MPC X yet, and I was already on the fence. I'm just waiting for AMS to ship my order because they're doing 1 day shipping.
    I don't think I would have bought my Live II if it wasn't retro edition. I would have got an MPC Key 61 if I didn't already own a fantom 08. Now I have a stationary sequencer. The live II is nice and all, but when I have all the IO attached, I just end up never using it. I get way more use out of it on my lap or away from my keyboards or whatever.

    Great review, Accurate. Quick question: For a hobbyist wanting to make boom bap, sample based beat production, would you recommend the MPC Studio MK2 or the Maschine MK3? Thank you.

    • @1337murk
      @1337murk ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What style of boom bap do you wanna make? Each machine has its own flavour, whether sp12, asr, mpc, etc.. each has its own aliasing distortion characteristics etc, as well as each having slightly different PPQ (pulse per quarter note) which is why certain beat machines are known for certain swings etc.
      The best thing to do is listen to what various people use and decide which suits you the best

    • @prohmic

      What sampler you use doesn't matter, it's all about how much skill you build and natural talent you have. The machine is not going to make you dope. Years of studying music and practicing will. Choose what "work flow" works for you and go. It's not mathematical and there is no "formula".

      @@1337murk Thank you so much for your response. I grew up listening to Gangstarr, Pete Rock & CL Smooth; Marley Marl; Large Professor; Evil Dee & Mr. Walt (Black Moon). That's the style I love. Since this will only be a hobby, I was thinking about the MPC Studio MK2 or maybe the Maschine MK3, which I have heard lots of good things about. I don't want to spend more than 600-700 dollars for a piece of hardware. I don't mind be tethered to a computer, either. That's why I am thinking the Studio MK2 or the Maschine MK3. I hope this information helped. And thank you again for trying to help me.

    the extra storage and ram will be such a small amount of money for the company to add but is defiantly apricated, but this is £500 more expensive.
    They have wangled this by giving you the entire library of plugins you get with the keyboard so this is not awful.
    I do think with the IO this has it would have been good for them to add the DAW like song mode of the FORCE, but they will not want to give a reason not to buy a FORCE.
    Maybe they will do this when they bring out the next version of the FORCE.
    Currently I would want this and the FORCE as a hardware music making setup because of this factor.
    Not a fan of the live workflow of the MPC, like the flexibility of the DAW mode to not have to create separate blocks to put together if I have time changes throughout a song, it's too much to have to hold in your head.
    But, there's something with the latency of hardware that software has yet fully matched and makes such a difference with the organic feel of a track... natural but precisely what you played.
    The colour is lovely and glad they finally brought a retro to the MPC X.
    The means to add interfaces to add more IO is great but it's only usable on both this and the FORCE for the outputs... because there is no multi track recording on either of them.
    Defiantly a space for a AKAI multitrack recorder that can sync up with these interments.
    If they are clever they would continue the the ability to add interfaces, maybe Dante and so added other company processing could also be added as well as choosing ones own conversion.
    These I my own crack pots ideas no one needs to hear lol
    I do think the Q-link knobs are much more usable that the other items which is a big bonus in producing music.

    Maybe I’ll start watching second hand MK1 prices now?
    I REALLY feel like it needs more RAM and CPU at this point.
    I think the x.. It’s the most hands on.. I don’t like using the plugins, on my live, because it’s not hands on enough for me and I imagine the X MIGHT cure that for me. I’d be interested to here your experience of moving to the x finally… your reflections after you’ve had a chance to grow into it. I SORTA feel like you might be the poster child for who ought to have an X.
    For me.. there’s a question of how important the MPC gets for my work… versus everything else.. it has to be high enough in my priority list it win the fight against everything else I think I need… which is roughly everything else! lol
    For me.. I think a part of it is I still have a ways to go in growing into it.. so I don’t feel totally qualified to pass judgement but there are a lot of little things about how it works the bug me. I THINK this is cause I’m coming to it from a more electronic musician perspective then a sort hip hop beat maker perspective.. which effects the sorta landscape of salience for you.. sort feature wise and how stuff works… and speaks to core questions with how the platform will evolve long term..
    Yeah, but idk how much I’m biased by my ignorance as someone who hasn’t totally grown into it yet.

    Personally I prefer to use a DAW because it's really the same thing loading plug-ins but you are buying into Planned obsolescence. It's essentially an iPad which what I'm not a fan of. The modern MPCs weren't built to last. They were designed to fail at a certian length of time forcing you to buy the upgrade given its not th same company anymore after Akai went out of business in 2005 and then it's assets were sold to Numark. I trashed my MPC 5000 back in January of this year. It was plaqued of both software and hardware problems. The power supplies on those are notorious for going bad that's a well known issue . Unfortunately I will never buy another akai product again. They just don't build them like they use to like the 90s under the original Akai company. I was so frustrated with my MPC 5000 since no replacement power supplies exist on the market that force to take a loss and toss it to the dumpster. Now Presonus Studio and my Presonus Atom drum pad controller is my new MPC.

    I have an Akai MPC X and I would be interested in a mixing scheme, a routing of inputs and outputs from the X in a mixer, I would like a tutorial explaining in detail how to use all the "holes" in the MPC X , all the inputs and outs... Is it worth it and if so, why, to connect to a mixer, analog or digital, and do you think that a better quality will be obtained in the mix and master? Thank you in advance. Ps: I also own MPC ONE and Maschine MK 3, like you who own several models of MPC and or Maschine... How will you use them / we use them all at the same time in a diagram, fig setup, a scheme for mixing several MPCs... or do we keep them as trinkets :)?
