I’m an organic row crop farmer and new bee keeper from Missouri. I can’t wait to watch them working my soybean fields. I just bought my first 3 pound package of bees for 2020 from you guys. My dad and I have been watching your videos and have learned a lot. Thanks and keep them coming.

Didn't know what I was getting into cause' the daughter handed me the new hive and said the package of bees "...is coming in two weeks..."... I said "wa, wa, WHAT!?"...I don't regret it one bit....wish I'd done beekeeping years ago....
Very informative. There's so much to learn. I studied a year before I got my bees. Then when I when into the hive to check everything I was lost. Hands on is the way to go but it can be overwhelming. I successfully maked two new hives, now I have four hives. Everything is going OK so far. I don't know everything and your videos help.
I've been watchin for almost a year now so I do appreciate any 411 you have to provide. Thank You for taking such great care of one of our most precious gifts. Many Fish One Love!!! @'Ur6
As a new beekeeper there is a tremendous amount of information to learn if you intend to manage your hives for growth. Knowing what a fresh egg looks like or a 1 2 or 3 day old may seem trivial to those who do not know but it is important to determining the progression of your hives. I just on Dec 20th got my second hive. I have learned a mountain of information about many subjects. Queens, workers, nurse bees, guard bees, drones, hive boxes, frames, foundation, wax ,honey, sugar water, SHB/varroa/AFB. I read the bee journal, I watch everyone's videos, I search out every bit of info I can find I read and I read some more. I am not a standing member of any local or state or national bee club or organization. I merely gained an interest into an insect that I had feared for 50 years. Now I am addicted to keeping bees. But I learn something new about bees everyday. I am no where near a master I never will be. But I am addicted to keeping bees. I want more. I have 2 hives I want 50. I can only keep 3hives by law in Florida in my yard. Damn I gotta find a place to keep bees or move. I done told you I wanna order some of your Queens, I am not ready to breed queens. My bees will not take my pollen (imitation) they are still bringing in pollen.
Most universities give basic, advanced, master, beekeeping and advanced queen raising classes through county Ag extention offices that lasts a day or 2 for about $75. Spills a lot of info, depends on the sponge.
Thank you so much for all the information you are giving for new bee keepers. I have just received my first colony and am very nervous. I keep listening to your advice which is invaluable. I am in Sussex England and wish there were more local mentors like you!
Learning to walk before I run we are building the hives so during that process and doing lots of insulation proper for the bees I have been stuck on TH-cam studying none stop honestly way more confident now I will be taking a local class soon this spring in the pacific north west so the winters and pests are pretty extreme locals have been very helpful with learning the needed skills to keep them healthy and stable threw the seasons but so far most do natural honey bee keeping due to loss of bees using chemicals and bees that have been feed sugar
It's cool to learn all about his, but I don't know how you do this. How do you not get uncomfortable from the tingles of bees walking on you, and you don't worry about one of them flying in your eye?
Hi Dave this is great! I've been at bee keeping for about a year now and you've always provide great information. I've caught 2 swarm here in NorCal (Bay Area) already for the month of April. One of which I caught about 3 weeks ago and have transferred them into in a vertical hive. I immediately put the trap out the next day in a different location and caught another swarm 3 days later. I'll be constructing a vertical hive for this swarm as well and will put the trap out once more for 3rd and work with the 3 for 2020. Thanks once again for the information you provide.
I really recommend new bee keepers to buy a good resource book. I also strongly suggest new beekepers starting with two hives so you are able to constantly compare them against each other.
Thank you. I will be starting a hive in the spring so this video helped me a lot, because I have been studying this for the past year and I was starting to feel a limitless overwhelmed.
I wouldn't even think about starting my own yard until I've taken classes and done some volunteer work with beekeepers who are experienced and as friendly as I'd like my bees to be. I would want and need enough experience to know exactly what I need; not be told what I need.
Well, small colony, late split like he said, probably mostly nurse bees and no grouchy old foragers....but anyway, you may find that using gloves increases clumsiness and decreases fine touch, so you are more likely to press a bee and provoke a sting. You may not feel the sting in your glove, but they can all smell what just happened and it raises the alarm. Moving slowly and having better feel, you can cause less panic by not using gloves.........
Billy Konstantine like B Calvert said, bare hands create the necessity of going slow which keeps bees calm despite your increased anxiety. Start with nitrile gloves and graduate to bare hands. I dump the charred residual from the smoker and rub it on my hands.
Great video David I hope to even learn more in my second year of beekeeping I sure hope that you keep bringing us these videos I learn a lot from you. Hope all is well with you all and you family and have a happy new year.
thank you, sir. the way you go about making this video is what i needed. i dont need to see joe suburbans new ryoki starter pack and all that shit. i will make a 2 frame hive and split it once in the year. easy. thank you, again.
Why is there a hive dieoff with a large amount of capped honey during the winter? What do bees need to make it through the winter? Are the Langstaff hives used mostly in the US needing some improvement to keep the bees warm during the Winter? Watching, learning and starting to do some research on paper, and asking questions.
I got my bees for Mothers Day! I am on cloud 9! I forgot to look for brood on my first inspection. I am going to make a check list that stays in my bee bucket.
It takes a little time. I now change feeders etc with no suit or gloves, and bees buzzing around while I do. It no longer bothers me. I do wear a veil and gloves when opening the hive .
As a newbeek I was wondering what on earth am I getting myself into?! I found out real fast that there's a huge difference between honey bees and wasps (altho there are some strains of bees that tend to be more aggressive). The first time I worked my hive I was almost trembling. A few minutes into it, you realize that they've got other things on their mind, so if you move slowly, calmly, and carefully, they'll more than likely ignore you and go about their buzziness...er, business. By the end of my first year, I reached the point where I wanted to tend the hive everyday, but that's just not a good idea, so I had to content myself with sitting near the hive and just watching them come and go. If you don't act like a threat to the hive, they won't view you as a threat, and if you spot a bee tending a flower or drinking water, you can actually pet them (albeit veeeery gently!)
@@user-md4di6yg2p I am the same! I want to "play" with them all the time...but I don't. My husband put a wireless camera on them so I can watch them on my phone anytime & anywhere. I LOVE my bees!

@@davidhaught84 like I stated....pollen patties do not work from late Sept thru Mid March...the bees eat the sugar out of the patty and discard the pollen to the bottom board...they don't produce brood in winter...they don't take down pollen up here in the winter....two different climates. You really don't have winter down there...you have a short break of summer lol (lived there from December to April once)...and my sister still lives in GA. Just saying...and he says it too...all beekeeping is local. Have a great holiday season!
One of my questions is how do you limit splits/swarms? Like if I were to start bee colony and only wanted to manage two hives at a time or something, do I just need to pay to have someone pick up my excess population when I start to notice signs of them getting ready to split?
Nice video! One of my four hives decided to requeen themselves in December! Weather was nice on Christmas eve so I did hive inspections and found a virgin queen in there. I have some neighbor beekeepers about a half mile away that keep a lot of russians and they said they probably have a few drones flying around. I'm gonna give it a couple of weeks and check when we get good weather again. If she's still not laying I don't know if they'll make it the rest of the way with no brood. I'll have to think about combining the hive. I'm thinking the virgin queen should at least stop a laying worker situation... I'm in Northeast Georgia.
@@davidhaught84 I will definitely consider that if she doesn't start laying! Two of the other three hives could probably have a frame of brood borrowed from them. I wasn't sure if that was an option in winter but if the ones I take brood from can still keep up I will do it!
OK. So I take a frame, with a queen cell from a 5 frame nuc, place it in a 2 frame nuc along with an empty frame. What's to stop the adults flying back to the 5 frame nuc.?
Do nobody want to be his camera guy? hahah . great information the world needs guys like this !!! and its really cool that you share this on youtube. im nobody just like this type of nature stuff and been learning allot .. this guy has no protection haha bees beeee loving him :) that queen stuff was cool to watch. keep sharing hopefully we can get better closeup.. this is better then discovery / nature programs i want more videos!!
Hey Dave, what is the material you make your nucs out of? I know you have mentioned if In the past, but I can’t remember. I plan on making nucs and swarm traps out of that for this year.
So I learned a lot from your and other's videos and so far so good. The weather here is between 20's - 40ish degrees here in Pa. not a lot of snow but cold wind. So I added styrofoam then wrap it up with some sort of silver windbreaker. I have not seen my girls in weeks and it is too cold to pop the hud of my hive. Their Italians and I don't want to piss them off. They have a bit of a temple.
I was stung a few times last year when my neighbor removed a very aggressive hive.. so at least I know I'm not allergic. He's an old guy in his 80's.. I better tap him for some knowledge why I still can.
Its been two weeks since we captured a bee removal and we did our first inspection this week. I saw the beautiful blonde queen. However they havent drawn any comb out yet despite the 1 to 1 sugar water with honey bee healthy is there anything else i can so ti get them drawing out cone? My mentor said we will check jn two weeks ( which would be a month of having ) do u have any sugestions other than praying?
2.5 metre pole 20cm diameter with flat guttered top on upside & rounded side to the bottom placed at 30 degrees with some shade & open entrance area celar of vegetation.. That's Rafter bee hive! Here i SE Asis where we have no winter!
Great video, thank you. I am trying to learn as much as I can, as I'm really looking into getting into beekeeping. What are your thoughts on Flowhive systems? Particularly Flowhive2 in looking at. Thanks again.
Thanks, that was next question: how do they turn nectar and pollen into honey. I am trying to educate myself before buying equipment from you. Thanks so much
Here’s what I find amazing…a feral bee colony will live for 20 years in a hollowed out oak tree and be perfectly fine. But hobby beekeepers like myself can still do everything right for them and still they may not make it 12 months. 🤦♂️
This was GREAT! THANK YOU So Much! I'm having a Fun time learning, sad thing, I am not caught up, together or . . void of things 'breaking'. No Doubt i'll be more Prepared, when time comes, because of your time and videos. Now I Will Know what's up when checking the 'Wild' OPEN Bee Hive here in Shrub. They sure Entertain and Teach me Too. = )
Learning health to manage is key and all first year hives save capped honey and freeze and use acilic acid to nuc mites ! Hive beetles are just as strong to control on new colonies !! Many 2nd year hives you may lose half of but your treatments on new s you going on in the hobby and expanding !!
I'm 13 and I wanna be a beekeeper when I grow up. Do you think I can do this along with selling flower arrangements? I feel that they could fit together nicely but I need another persons opinion.
Do you use mostly foundationless? The hive I bought came with plastic foundation so I guess I'll try that first. I will be coating them with two coats of wax.
Thought I was doing great over the spring and summer... Colonies were growing like crazy, split them several times... Then lost all my colonies to ants within the first month of the winter.. Not gonna get any more bees, lost several thousand dollars worth of investment... They were all fine then within a week they were all gone...
Don't just give up, just learn from mistakes. You have already invested the money. When my grandad raised quail off the ground.... he would put coffee cans on the legs of the pens filled with oil with a cover higher to keep water out. That way the ants couldn't get to them.
As first time bee keeper, can I have just one nuc or a package or one of each. What do you recommend. Thank you for your advice ahead of time. Thanks for the videos I have already learned a lot from them.
Hi I have been following your channel and really appreciating your content. I want to as k you a question regarding foggers as I do not want to spend the money on vapourizer at this stage.
I wasn't sure if that was an option in winter but if the ones I take brood from can still keep up I will do it!
wonderful video, keep making them i'm watching them over and over.
Also do I use pollen patties in the winter...is that what you're talking about?
OK. So I take a frame, with a queen cell from a 5 frame nuc, place it in a 2 frame nuc along with an empty frame. What's to stop the adults flying back to the 5 frame nuc.?
How do you keep the top feeder from freezing in the winter?
Thanks for this video im in the uk and will be starting bee keeping this year
Hello
I don't understand why you have single hives. Where do you harvest the honey from ?
Isn't royal jelly only in queen cells? What is the white stuff in worker bee cells?
Bro only 140k you need like 5 mil your so good
Do nobody want to be his camera guy? hahah . great information the world needs guys like this !!! and its really cool that you share this on youtube. im nobody just like this type of nature stuff and been learning allot .. this guy has no protection haha bees beeee loving him :) that queen stuff was cool to watch. keep sharing hopefully we can get better closeup.. this is better then discovery / nature programs i want more videos!!
Hi ,, I want to know how to transfer to the another hive,
Hey Dave, what is the material you make your nucs out of? I know you have mentioned if In the past, but I can’t remember. I plan on making nucs and swarm traps out of that for this year.
I'm in new England any idea how to winterize? We get temps below 0 and feet of snow.
Nice talk, great advice 😀🐝 ❤️
So I learned a lot from your and other's videos and so far so good. The weather here is between 20's - 40ish degrees here in Pa. not a lot of snow but cold wind. So I added styrofoam then wrap it up with some sort of silver windbreaker. I have not seen my girls in weeks and it is too cold to pop the hud of my hive. Their Italians and I don't want to piss them off. They have a bit of a temple.
does it matter how the frames are set ta the openin/entrance?thank ya fer the video
I haven't been able to find any of your new videos
Powered pollen or patties?
2.5 metre pole 20cm diameter with flat guttered top on upside & rounded side to the bottom placed at 30 degrees with some shade & open entrance area celar of vegetation.. That's Rafter bee hive! Here i SE Asis where we have no winter!
Great video, thank you. I am trying to learn as much as I can, as I'm really looking into getting into beekeeping. What are your thoughts on Flowhive systems? Particularly Flowhive2 in looking at.
Thanks again.
Thank you for this. It's really helpful!
Great information 👍
Honey bees are not in danger. Wild bees are in danger. Thanks for the informative video. Good advice.
how do you tell the difference between nectar & honey on the frame?
Nectar is in open cells, its got to evaporate big part of moisture before bees will cap it into honey.
I will be coating them with two coats of wax.
what is the outside measurement of you 2 frame nucs the width is what i need to know thanks
@Freedom Toast you've been keeping bees for 1 year. Maybe you shouldn't bother making snarky comments.
How do we know if queen is present or not present . Any kinda symptoms need to look for?
Thought I was doing great over the spring and summer... Colonies were growing like crazy, split them several times... Then lost all my colonies to ants within the first month of the winter..
Not gonna get any more bees, lost several thousand dollars worth of investment... They were all fine then within a week they were all gone...
Don't just give up, just learn from mistakes. You have already invested the money. When my grandad raised quail off the ground.... he would put coffee cans on the legs of the pens filled with oil with a cover higher to keep water out. That way the ants couldn't get to them.
Thank you!
I'm just starting in bee keeping, how big a hive do i need to start ? 5, 8,10, frames ?
Him breathing heavy is making me breath heavy lol
lol
Big swarm in my tamarind tree for 2 months now!
As first time bee keeper, can I have just one nuc or a package or one of each. What do you recommend. Thank you for your advice ahead of time. Thanks for the videos I have already learned a lot from them.
What’s is the best news to make honey
Hi
I have been following your channel and really appreciating your content. I want to as k you a question regarding foggers as I do not want to spend the money on vapourizer at this stage. I am in NZ and cannot get 100 proof alcohol at an acceptable price, would a mix of oxalic acid and isopropyl alcohol be okay and not harm bees?
Thanks, have a great New Year!
What is the size of box that you use for 2frames?
th-cam.com/video/WiEp0O3zMqg/w-d-xo.html the video . think it's starts at
4:57 for the box measurments
Thank you guys
@@gc47 Glad to help, just bought my first

@@gc47 I would think so , not for sure
I would call the store and see , number 706-508-8605 or 706-581-0473.
Would bees eat honey that was placed in a frame type device like artificial comb by humans?
They should gobble up any spilled honey.
Those bees are cute
