Hey David, as a newbeek I have learned boatloads from your channel. Started watching last winter, and now I check for new videos every day, and if you haven't had the time, I just watch and re-watch your older ones. Sure appreciate your sharing your knowledge and experience!!
I’m just starting and have researched many different ways to keep bees / split hives. Nucs are 170 here with 3 frames brood and 2 honey with queen. I bought 4 and they are great.
I built a bee garden i'm just waiting for the last freeze day of April to plant the flowers. I made a shallow water hole with ladders in the center i'll take and post some photos when done. I got my cinder-blocks and yard poles ready. poles are about 1 1/2' above the ground (OK or no?). I have been making some deep brood boxes and med honey supers for a couple days now (followed your measurements in another video) probably be done before mid April. I just want to say thank you, I've been watching your videos for a while now and that's what helped me to get motivated and back into the beekeeper mind set. I have 3 yrs experience when I was a teen but now i''m in my 40's and its time to help our pollinator girls again.
I am looking to add a beehive next year at the latest. Thank you very much David for all your videos. This had done more to help me than you know. You will be the one I will get my "stuff" from to start this new adventure. I am in South Carolina with cousins in Chattanooga. Thanks a bunch

I won't be ready to establish my first hive until spring of 2020 so I am going to spend the fall and winter getting my hives ready and I am very much looking forward to visiting your store. Thanks again for all the great information.
Dave is definitely telling you the truth study up I have been watching his videos for over a year and have learned a lot from him alone not counting other beekeepers that I have watched. As a matter of fact I have ordered my first package of bees from Barnyard bees and will be picking them up April 9th
I got 2 bee packages April 30 this year, June I bought 2 new queens and did 2 splits And made a nuc and let them make a queen yesterday I checked they are growing so fast The nuc has 2 full frames of new eggs And I took 28lb honey from them Now I’m just letting them prepare for winter they have lots of honey and pollen stored So far I have 4 hives and 1 nuc
Believe him! I started beekeeping last year. Bought a nuc locally from a guy who takes his hives to pollinate down south. I had super aggressive bees. There would be 100 stingers on my suit. They would swarm me, find their way under me veil and sting my face. I’ll be buying from Barnyard this season. I had to destroy mine for my children’s safety.
As always great video Dave! I am the newbee who is going to put 2 hives (8 frame deeps) on the flat roof of a commercial building. I am at the New Jersey Shore and I just ordered 2 Nucs from a fairly local Jersey Beekeeper. She anticipates Nucs being ready middle of April of course depending on the weather?? I have already build my boxes and am currently painting them. I have read about 6 beekeeping books and have watched most of your videos and most of the videos put out by Your buddies. I feel that I am really ready!! Can’t Wait!!
I am very new to beekeeping. This video is very informative. I am in the Atlanta area and I will definitely use you for some of my supply needs. Great video
David, the timing for this video was perfect. I have a presentation for new or those interested in beekeeping, tomorrow morning, in Vero Beach Florida. You can bet that I'll recommend this video. Have a great be season. Gary. 😎🐝🐝🐝
As I said in a recent video... I started last spring with my first hive and it was a NUC from east Tennessee. Your videos were the main source of learning for me. I will continue coming back for more as you make them. Thank you so much for these educational videos. Please keep them coming.
From west oz mate I picked up on curbside throw out a complete large 3 box and all the frames. Have watch a lot of your videos, you inspired me to do the start of this in our next spring . Thank you.
I had bought 2 nucs last week for 150.00 each and the first one did not bother me one bit until i shook the ones left on top of the 10 frame. The other one i did not get in yet the weather has been crappy. First year for bees here. The guy is also very nice and helpful he told me if i have questions about anything just call him
Would you do a video on how to tell when to split a hive? I have watched a lot of videos on beekeeping, and none have stated when and why to split a hive. Thank you.
Dave, the 2 frame Nuc design is a game changer for me. After my first year of beekeeping, I'm very excited to do some queen rearing of my own and build up my hive numbers from 6 to 20+ in 2019. Your vids are, and have been, a huge help to me. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
New beekeepers, listen to Dave and get a bee suit. Even gentle bees can be temperamental at times. If you get stung several times because you weren't wearing a suit, it might turn you off to beekeeping. It's really a wonderful and fascinating hobby.
Dan Ski that happened to my wife I was out working a hive my wife was fifteen ft from me watching and she was the one to get stung on the tip of the nose. Now if she see me surrounded she stays 50-100 ft away.

Hi David noobie here I hope to have 2 nucs going soon. I joined my local beekeepers club and taking noobie class. Been watching videos over a year and started reading a book about it and so on. I built a bunch of my own hardware last spring - summer. I even made some fat bee man type feeders to start out with. I'm building Little Bit Honey Bees - Joe's Pollen Feeder soon - waiting on some free green 4" pipe :) = That's a long ways for the bees to be chasing you back then lol - And by the way I built way more stuff than I needed but I had fun building it.
@Demo Joe Sounds like you are on top of things. One point: "I built way more stuff than I needed ..." That's not possible unless you quit right away! If you start and fall in love with the challenges, the bees, the honey, the beekeepers, the community, the magic....well, you will need everything you built plus more! Good luck to you!!
I am hoping so Julie - I would love to build some more hardware. I have some more wood to make some mediums and some Vivaldi boards. I have like 30+ new frames I will be assembling soon I picked up from my local Amish supplier dirt cheat. I plan on using some plastic starter strips in some and the others I have some double dipped plastic foundation. I also have a little wax I acquired from some used equipment that I processed and plan to melt it to coat the foundation again... I can't wait !
Thanks I hope to make a split after a few weeks after getting them and maybe get one of Davids Queens so I would get Barnyard Gentle bees in my yard. LOL
Awesome! I will share one thing I have heard many new beekeepers say: it helps to start with more than one colony. Sounds like you are ahead on that, too!
Really enjoyed the Barnyard Bees for Beginners and new beekeepers! I subscribed and rang the little bell and gave a thumbs up! I would like to be considered for the free gift. We are starting to keep bees this Spring and this information has really helped us! Thanks
Thank you. I enjoyed this video.Mid summer dervish year here in South East Queensland Australia. I have been watching videos and chats for 8 months. Too slow getting swarm box made so have to wait till next spring although I am thinking of putting a swarm trap up the paddock. Love watching and learning. I am slowly buying items I need, tight budget. Thanks again.
Hi Lois, Lol, the same thing happened to me my first year. I set out two hives and baited them in middle to late summer. No luck, I didn't know what I was doing. But I learned a lot during the 8-9 months that I was waiting to get packages. I even went to a state convention. I went to the beginners class and realized that I already knew a lot of the information because I had been learning on the internet.
Looking forward to your nuc and my 1st experience. Starting off with with one nuc and one package. Have a queen scheduled for June delivery. Planning on split at that point. Jumping in with both feet. Thanks for you and Joe for all the videos. Very interesting listening to different ones and their preferences. Thanks again.
That "Hive Tool" is actually called a "Glazing Bar", it is used in window making and available at all hardware stores. The hive tools sold today were originally modified glazing bars..
Hi Dave! Love your videos! I’ve learned so much! I’ve been doing my research (from you and other sources) for about a year now and I was hoping to get a package or two this spring, but unfortunately, I won’t be able to get started as early as I wanted. Might have to start next spring. :(
We started out last year with one, intending on staying there. Fast forward to today, and we are at five this winter. So far they seem ok, I have added sugar mounds on the frames and so far only one hive has eaten a small amount of the sugar. So hopefully we will exit winter with five live hives! I have read and studied using your videos as well, and some from dirtrooster, also the fat man. I am ramping up and have found another keeper selling out so I acquired a lot more boxes and frames, plus I have made some equipment. Thanks for the info, I will be posting videos this spring hopefully. I was wondering is ground corn would work as well as pollen?
If you purchase a nuc, be sure to ask, 1) how old is the queen, 2)is she from a swarm or did they grow her, 3)did you treat the colony-when and how? We all know having varroa is not a matter of if but when.
That what he's talking about , new to beekeeping and have know idea why I should be asking those questions nor do I know what the answer should be. Maybe you should make a video
You nailed it again David...hope you saw Joe playing with a drone (both kinds) up in West Virginia, thats gonna be good when that video comes out. The knowedge you put out is more valuable than a formal education...I tell all the FFA and 4-H kids to subscribe to you guys to learn...
people are coming to me to get in on my urban bee campaign. I will refer them to you. Sometime do a video about your state regulators and your interactions with them. Merry Christmas
Called store...no answer..left no message...to my surprise, i received a call back when they opened and was able to place my order.. customer service is well above par👍👍👍 thank you
Don't know if you watch the 628 DirtRooster or not. if you don't you should. He has taught me a lot, as well as BarnYard Bees. and Jeff Horchoff. There is a tremendous amount of information on the internet. Your local library will have books read them, I am just starting out also but I have been absorbing everything I can for about a year and a half, and there is A LOT to learn. I am ready to put out a couple of hives this year, I am shooting for 5 this year.
Bee keeping for dummies is a good book for trouble shooting. And another good read that i hightly recomend is called The Queen Must Die by William Longgood. It focuses on the similarity of bees to humans. Pretty fascinating. Good luck.
I haven't seen any over $150, I just went and picked them up today and I have never seen so many bees. He had already sold 25 nucs and he was on the verge of swarms in all 100 of his hives. At least looked like it to me, they were everywhere. I was out there in sandals t shirt and shorts. Did put on a veil just to be safe but I took it off after a couple minutes. Most docile bees I've ever seen. I am from Arkansas and out state insect is a honey bee for a reason, so I assume thats why they are cheaper. Nuc I got today is huge, but they are so docile ive only seen maybe a dozen since I set them up. He shook a lot of young workers in and he said thats why they weren't flying much, you see on TH-cam of them swarming once you shake them but they just went straight in.
Thanks for your videos and going back into the basics. I’ve been studying for almost a year and I am hoping to have bees this spring. Most likely will not happen this year. I want to stock up on supplies and join the local bee club and get a mentor.
Great video and thanks for sharing I will be getting my bees in April here in West Virginia I am getting two Nucs to start out with some one up here told me it would be easier to start out with this is my first time having bees. I have been watching a lot of you tube videos and talking to people who have bees.
Barnyard Bees I live about 10 miles from Hundred I live in a little town called Wana between Blacksville and Wadestown you have probably traveled threw here before I live on Rt7.
Barnyard Bees I have heard that name before my brother used to teach at hundred high school and now he is the principal at Clay Battelle high school his name is David Cottrell we sure do live in a small world I know exactly where you are from do you ever get back up this way?
Barnyard Bees I graduated from Clay Battelle in 89 my brother graduated from Clay Battelle in 83 we still play Valley in football and basketball my boy plays football and basketball for Clay Battelle I don’t know any Cottrells from reader but I am sure we are probably related somewhere down the line. What is your last name if I may ask.
I wish I had discovered you before I purchased all of my equipment. I won't mention the company, but I think it is a large operation that does not give the individual attention to a customer that it seems you do. I've learned serval things since watching your videos. I have a ten frame hive, and a package is on the way in May. I have read, watch videos, talked to locals. I feel that I am ready to install the package. The one question I cannot seem to get answered is, how thick is the sugar water spray to be that is used to spray the package? Thick like what you feed, half that, or even a quarter of that? And. Do you need to feed the newly installed package just sugar water? I have a top feeder for that purpose. Or, do you also have to feed them pollen? Thanks for your videos. I will be in touch as I need new supplies. Take care.
Hi David I am a first year beekeeper. I would like to ask you, come spring, doing splits, lets say I have several 5 frame nucs. I want to increase my volume of bees and hives. Now, for instance, taking one five frame and splitting, will it be ok to make 4 splits off the five hives? I know that all frames will not be the same. One frame might have nurse bees on capped brood, one may have nurse bees on particle uncapped brood along with capped brood. One frame may have just honey. Along with the fore mentioned, adding a frame of foundation such as plastic cell, or wax foundation , or even a frame of starter strip with the X fishing line for the bees to draw out, and, as long as I have enough nurse bees for each frame split into a two frame mating nucs as you use, adding one of you mated queens to each. Now the question. As long as I am feeding pollen and sugar water, shouldn't each of these new two frame splits have a pretty good chance to make it as long as I do my part correctly? Thanks, David I really appreciate the good advice. Sincerely, Phillip Hall
Great video, thank you. Looking to get into beekeeping to help the bee population. What are your thoughts on the Flowhive 2? I think it appeals to new people, but that's just me.
Great video for learning what a nuc is. Just wondering why the person recording this is standing in the bee line to make this video. I started keeping bees by helping my dad with his full hive. We have carnolian bees (Italian bees i think) they are very docile. Just some advice all bee keepers should WEAR GLOVES AND A BEE SUIT OR A VEIL and use smoke. And get yourself some epinephrine even if you are not allergic. i know it sounds crazy but i know someone who has been keeping bees for a long time with no allergy. A bear got their hive and the next morning they got stung while cleaning up the mess. Long story short that was the day they became allergic and went to the hospital in anaphylactic. Happy and safe bee keeping☺
Make sure you have bee bread or your bees may start eating the queens eggs for protein. I have my own pollen patty recipe . I don’t sell nucs to first year students. I have given nucs to a good friend but I help than the first year. 😂 but I won’t sell one? I want good students. Great videos! Thank you for showing this. I do have a pic from a package but most one third were dead. Not yours though
New Beekeepers need both a package and an established nuc. The skills that a package bee install prepares the new Beekeeper for catching a swarm and is essential plus the thrill of an install. They also need to see how New comb buildup starts and how the package grows. Please do not discount the learning properties of having a package.
I'm in NC and I'll be moving next year onto 20 acres and plan to keep bees. I'm trying to learn now so I don't kill any. How much can a person make by way of beekeeping and selling bee products?? How do most people go about selling the honey they produce.
Ausome video I'm thinking about starting a hive I found a brood box on the way to work on the side of the road after 3 days I stop to check it out and brought it home 8 frame still need a lid and a wheather topper a super and a bottom and some tools thanks for a great video 🙌🙌🙌 got my sub
I would like to ask if there’s one book on bee keeping I should start with it would be ? Thinking I should start learning this year to prepare my self maybe getting bees next year . Thank you again for sharing your knowledge. Looking forward to more videos
Can you speak more to the differences in feeding for honey production and making bees? You mentioned NEVER feeding sugar water if you're making honey and i don't know why.
I was going to make an order with you but the price for shipping was about 60 percent of the cost. Even though I live in Georgia and get regular mail/shipments.
What do you except for payment if I get a nuc and if I am not completely ready with my hive because of assembly etc I can keep the bees going in the nuc until I get my hive completed I bought a hive kit 10 frame 2 deep and 1 medium langstroth I am slow to assemble it
Hey. Dave I enjoy watching your informative videos. But I am very ignorant of some of the terminology that you use such as Nucs cat brood maybe you could do a video on this topic, that would be informative thanks
I would love to buy from you but im in oveido (central fla)...about 8-9 hours from you. Love all the info you give...cheerfully! What if i built a box with frames and just set it out with sugar syrup ( as i have bees come around my yard), would the bees come in and make a home in it?
If you catch a swarm it might work. But for the most part the queen wont leave her hive for no good reason. It would leave too much room for her to get hurt or killed even if she is with other bees.
Advice, first ask your agent or insurance company first. And ask if just for personal use a couple hives, versus commercial selling honey then you have a liability if someone claims your honey made them sick.
Hey there , ok so I’m new , as green as a new blade of grass , not ready to start yet. But I do want to know how to order a kit , a nuc?? I went to your website and couldn’t find a link for the whole nuc ?? Am I missing something ?? Please can someone help !! BTW I love all the information you put in your videos !!! Love your channel !!!
The B family Brewer Hi, you can get a hive kit at most suppliers that gets you started with wooden ware. You will need a jacket with veil hive tool and smoker. I agree with David, Nucs are a good way to start. Joining a local bee club immediately is highly recommended as is having two hives as a minimum. You can price out all of this online with any supplier.
Plan on $800 to $1,000 as first year budget....that's enough to raise 1 or 2 hives to enter winter with.....if you want raise bees to sale or produce honey you'll need additional funds....could trim the budget a little if you cut & build your own wooden ware......experience from a 3 year beekkeeper.....bee sure to get a detailed education & find a good mentor

I also have a little wax I acquired from some used equipment that I processed and plan to melt it to coat the foundation again... I can't wait !
@Demo Joe
You will do fine! I love your attitude. Good luck with it.
Thanks
Thanks for the quick responses.
I found a beekeeper she very very well knowin in my area she sold me a nuc for 130, she is the head of our bee club here
@Barry.Bee.Benson why
@Barry.Bee.Benson oook
Thx for the great videos , new to beek and appreciate the work and knowledge you share.
Thanks David your videos always help.
That "Hive Tool" is actually called a "Glazing Bar", it is used in window making and available at all hardware stores. The hive tools sold today were originally modified glazing bars..
Hello Dave, thanks for the video, great advice as always.
What's your opinion of the new Saskatraz bees?
Hi Dave! Love your videos! I’ve learned so much! I’ve been doing my research (from you and other sources) for about a year now and I was hoping to get a package or two this spring, but unfortunately, I won’t be able to get started as early as I wanted. Might have to start next spring. :(
What are your thoughts of “Flow Hives”?
Why do your hives appear to be made of OSB? What is the material you use? Thanks
Omg this makes so much more sense...thank you.
Thanks Dave you are telling it like it is.
Called store...no answer..left no message...to my surprise, i received a call back when they opened and was able to place my order.. customer service is well above par👍👍👍 thank you
I'm planning on starting this year. I'm going to my first beekeeper meeting with the local bee club next Tuesday.
Good luck.
That 2 framer is to cool never seen one and think you for the info
When you get a nuc, are they secured in the box for transport from the local beekeeper to your hive and setup?
He showed me one queen, and got all completely full frames of brood. and 1 of almost capped honey with brood mixed in, so I think he did me right
Thanks for your videos and going back into the basics.
Mark cottrell I thought Dave had a wv accent! Too funny. It’s almost as bad as mine. 😃
As always, Thank you David . Phillip Hall
Can a new queen from a gentle breeding inserted into a mean colony change the temperment of the coming to become gentle?
P. Mark McGonigle yes they can and will most times
Happy and safe bee keeping☺
just curious, what is the purpose of the piece of advantec you have between the stacked 8 frame deeps?
I had no idea bees had different temperaments, but I guess after a thousand years of selective breeding, it makes perfect sense!
In East Texas, $150 is a normal everyday price for a Nuc.
@@davidhaught84 Gentle. That price is just the frames with bees. You bring your box.
Great video David!
How can a person get a Nuc package if they're not local to you? It doesn't look like it's an option?
how much do you sell the 2 frame mating nucs for?
Great video thanks for sharing
I would like to ask if there’s one book on bee keeping I should start with it would be ? Thinking I should start learning this year to prepare my self maybe getting bees next year . Thank you again for sharing your knowledge. Looking forward to more videos
Can you speak more to the differences in feeding for honey production and making bees? You mentioned NEVER feeding sugar water if you're making honey and i don't know why.
Thanks for the good information.
Other than the barnyard bee channel watch “a year in the life of an apiary “ on TH-cam. I bought the 10 video series on vhs in the 90s.
larry tornetta I agree, Dr.Delaplane explained the process so well.
@@gwenlazarus1471 do y'all have a link?
Thank You.Sir.. Great Info !!!
How far North have you shipped bees?
I was going to make an order with you but the price for shipping was about 60 percent of the cost. Even though I live in Georgia and get regular mail/shipments.
@@davidhaught84 do you have a store front?
You’ve got some good fish now get you some good bees
Really good info you shared. Thank you!
From your experience is it true the bee population is declining?
What do you except for payment if I get a nuc and if I am not completely ready with my hive because of assembly etc I can keep the bees going in the nuc until I get my hive completed I bought a hive kit 10 frame 2 deep and 1 medium langstroth I am slow to assemble it
Nucs are for local pickup only?
Dave ships packages. If you want to catch a swarm, watch swarm catching videos; but you never know what your going to get. Learn with gentle bees.
Dan Ski not trusting usps! Just got mealworms today from them...crushed box, bag open, worms half gone! No thanks
If you catch a swarm it might work. But for the most part the queen wont leave her hive for no good reason. It would leave too much room for her to get hurt or killed even if she is with other bees.
Do u sell nucs out of state ? I was just on ur website and it says for local only .
I’m planning to start with a captured wild hive and not buy any hopefully.
💛💛💛
i wanted to start until some people started talking about home owners insurance not allowing them. Any advice?
Advice, first ask your agent or insurance company first. And ask if just for personal use a couple hives, versus commercial selling honey then you have a liability if someone claims your honey made them sick.
thanks will do that
Beeinsure.com, I'll probably look at these guys if I setup an apiary off of my property. Dave will probably know more about this stuff
Good stuff David.
Studying this whole thing. Not ready yet to own bees.
Can you give me a round about figure of how much money does it cost to start out beekeeping
My guess$200-300. Bee Package and a hive box or Nuc, suit, tools (feeder, hive tool, sugar, smoker)
I’m agree with Tommy on this one. The first year is a little expensive to get start.
