1978 Ferrari 308 GTS. Finally getting started on Project 308. Engine removal and disassembly in preparation to send for paint and reassembly/rebuild. Instagram: / loutrottier
To anyone watching this series. I am at episode 11 and this is the first video series I have watched. When you get to where I am you will be able to tackle your own 308 project and will have enjoyed the journey. No rock music, no useless product placements and honest hammering, cussing and head scratching typical of wiring through previously attempted repairs and honest wear and tear analysis that accurately show what a thorough rebuild looks like.nwe all wish were were this good. Plus he is a good character in a sea of "personalities".
sorry to be off topic but does someone know a way to log back into an Instagram account..? I was stupid lost the account password. I would love any tips you can offer me.
@Emmett Wilson thanks for your reply. I found the site on google and im trying it out atm. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Wow, talk about a tight fit - I would have bet anything you'd have to drop the engine down out of these cars, very surprised to see that they come out this way. Thanks for making the video!
Very nicely done video and well edited. I've pulled a few 308 engines and it looks like you figured out most of it first time around. My only observations would be to leave the carbs on as they do not get in the way and are easier to remove with the engine out. Once sorted these are very robust and reliable engines. I look forward to following your progress.
@@LouTrottier I figured they needed re-building. As it happens we are only a few KM away from one another (small world). Message me if you need any 308 info. I have lots of data and experience including carb setup work using O2 sensors and road testing to get the jets perfect.
Thank you sharing your special Knowledge in restoring Ferrari Gtsi 308- - I got Gtsi 1981.. my issue Cooling fan Left side not work. Got the part. Watching you got some Idea. Appreciate your Website.
I'm in the middle of pulling the engine from my '79 and I appreciate the video. I did this once before 35 years ago and don't remember much other than agonizing over a bolt holding the dip stick. Why did you pull the muffler? It's not in the way that I can see.
Gotta love engine hoists: why do they make them all with square wheels and casters that don't roll or pivot? lol.....I pulled my first motor in 1975 or so, technology on engine hoists hasn't changed ONE iota since then.
@@LouTrottier Question for you: (also at 8:19) does this thing have a full frame that goes all the way from the rear bumper/fasica to the front? Or is it a unibody type with a sub frame at the front and another at the rear?
@@LouTrottier when I used to pull up in McDonald's and u sit in the queue , what was so cool was the engine fans kick in as it sits and air is blown thru those side vents and the sound was so luxurious.

@Emmett Wilson It worked and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thanks so much you saved my account !
I'm excited for you Lou !
You finally got the project going
I will come see you tomorrow
Amazing really , the work of a mechanic. Watching such things makes u appreciate a little the amount u get charged for work when your motor goes in.
that is true. thanks!

carbs need a refresh, so I decided to take them off. thanks

super job Lou, I'm on a 911 restore now, but my next will be a 308. I'll be back! Russ
thank you. I'm having a great time with it. cheers Lou
You move so quickly. No wonder you are the best car mechanic ever! :-)
I said that on another video of the guys moving at warp speed: hey, did you feed them a gallon of coffee and a 1/4 lb of benzedrine? lol
wow no broken exhaust bolts!!! one thing about a ferrari: not driven in Canadian winters!!!!

thanks, its not technically in the way but I wanted to properly examine it and paint it, so I removed it.
Thank you so much@@LouTrottier

The alternative description of an engine hoist - A tool designed to test the tensile strength of whatever it is that you forgot to disconnect.
Love it!
Carefully. Next question
8:55 dude jack up the wheel, that will lift the a arms and axle and give you clearance for the exhaust pipe.....
axles had to come out anyway, plus it was stuck at the control arm mounting tab.
@@LouTrottier yeah I can kind of see that at 8:19.

@@LouTrottier thanks lou! I wondered when I saw the frame at 8:19.
BTW: great work on the fancy new intro too!
Great job!
Thank you.
Are you in Canada? When you said "Out" I picked up a Pinch of Canada.
Yes. Canada.
I’m local to you
Stop by sometime!
Looks like the exhaust pipe would have come out if you jacked up the suspension.
Tried that. No go. Thanks.
Why didn’t you just raise the suspension to get out the exhaust?
tried that, not enough clearance.
i thought it drops out on rear sub frame
newer models yes.
You can't drop that out on a subframe?
nope, Ferrari v8's through the top. V12's down and out with the subframe.
My MR2 mark² engine looks much bigger and nicer than this engine...what's the difference in power??
The mr2 probably has more lol.

what was the total time spent removing the engine?
About 4 hours I’d say.

Can you turn it into a Tesla powered Ferrari please. Place Batts into engine bay.
ouch.
