That is by far the most important part of the shooting for people in diamond and champ like me. You should make a video where you pay someone to make a plugin like that cause it would be so helpful.
I have a soapbox on 'putting in the hours' just for its own sake. This is one of the things that I noticed when I came back to rocket league after a year. I felt like I had less control of my car and that my offensive play style wasn't as good until I watched this video and I realized that my shot was what I was missing
Squishy actually trains shooting a lot. It's might just be one of his best skills and he'll almost always perfectly slot every ball he wants to. You can see it in his videos as well as his pro play.
I model the way I play around squishys playstyle. I've always envied how far he can be from an ideal shot but always manages to quickly adjust his car for the perfect shot. I've heard him say before that he uses DAR and also regular air roll. I honestly think a large part of the issue is that Free Training is the default for match down-time. You turn on RL, queue up, know that you have about 30 seconds to fill, so go into Free Training. Without any kind of set-up, you either smack the ball or take it to the wall for an air dribble, by which point the match starts. If Psyonix included the option to have your last training pack or a favourite training pack accessible from the Match Select menu as a one-click start, people would practice shooting or whatever else you can do in a training pack more often. Choosing a training pack by going through the menus and lists takes too long, so knowing that, people don't go there, unless they're dedicating specific time to it, which most don't.
I remember when I started rocket league Virge was one of the content creators I watched the most, glad to see him here. And amazing video as usual Wayton. Even though I know I'll never improve on this game lol
Great video! I would be interested to get JKnapp’s, Rise’s, and Ahmad’s takes on shooting, as I believe they’re the 3 best strikers in the world right now.
Another great video, but I’m curious if you found any improvement from the shots you don’t hit so often in a game. Because I find that practicing what I call off-angle shots to help in games where most people wouldn’t expect a good touch from. But I’m just a plat 3 and maybe more consistent touches at my level means more than it does in gc and ssl.
Anything that you can't do it's work practicing, often we stay in our comfort zone where improving is really hard and slow, but if you practice shots or mechanics that you can't do your skill will skyrocket, just don't push yourself to the point where you just rage, you need a bit of comfort, if this make sense, like you can't practice flip resets if you're not consistent with air dribbles or you just get mad and don't improve, you need to keep pushing your limits further and further the more you learn
if you rotate that help a lot into good positioning shots or making play for team mate except for the ball chaser and ass sniffing team mated behind u . I watch 2 Argentina player and not sure if the one i play with is her B/F he Diamond 3 to Champ 1 and she Diamond 1 all just rotation
8:45 lifting the bad rubber on the analog and using 2 drips of super glue would also work, you should do giveaways of your old controllers, i bet they are easy to repair
I was thinking of a joke comment to leave the moment I saw this notification and I started to type "Calling it right now, it's shooting." Then I heard the word shooting in the video, and my joke went out the door.
I'm sure we've all had those matches we've played where every shot we take, no matter the angle, is powerful and placed perfectly. If you could do that consistently it would be difficult for people to beat you. Especially for lower ranks
Banger (just like those shots). I think Virge is right at the end though. It's similar to a batter in baseball trying to place their hit in certain parts of the field when there are so many variables with how the pitch is coming at them. Even the best in the world are successful less than half of the time.
I recently talked to a pro player and he gave me a great insight as to why I should limit my training time that I dedicate to shooting. 1. Regardless of whether or not I'm dedicating time to training shooting, I'm going to be getting lots of reps in just by playing ranked. The same won't always be true for other mechanics like air dribbles or flip resets. 2. Since shooting is THE mechanic of rocket league and is universally essential in every single game, we all have lots and lots of hours in shooting. Whereas, if I'm trying to add a new mechanic to my toolbelt (say, flip resets), I might be able to train for an hour and see massive improvement in my skills. So given that everyone has limited time to play, its better to train your weaknesses and keep adding tools to your toolbelt one by one than it is to spend hours and hours working on a mechanic that is hard to improve and is used every game anyways.
Wayton is the only person to teach the exact ways to train in RL than the other channels showing you a custom pack to train, BUT they don’t teach you HOW to dribble or be better, they just throw packs at you, but wayton explains the ways well that i got better by listening to him
I think a big reason people don't practice shooting a lot is because most people feel like they're at least somewhat decent at it. Obviously they could still improve, but as you've shown in the video is takes a lot of time to improve once you react a certain skill level. Compare that to something like flip resetting. If you can do them sometimes, but miss them a lot, then if you practice for a bit, you're likely to see improvement faster.
I remembered and I mastered this before where if you just turn off ball cam before shooting you can look at ur car position, the ball, opponents and the net to see where to place the shot. It really helps cause you’re in a fixed camera angle facing the goal and the ball is coming at you.
with your controller issues, it would most definitly be solved by purchasing a scuff controller, the sticks on those are perfect and it comes with extra sticks, it overall feels great and since your job is rocket league, it would be a great investment.
I've said this to my friend many times. "If I actually went and did the training packs I'd be so much better" but it's so much easier and more enjoyable to just jump in to games.
This ALWAYS happens to me. If I only do free play for a couple days in a row, when I go back into ranked I immediately notice my game sense(positioning, rotations, etc.) and game speed are subpar to the rank I’m in (c3-gc1). It usually takes like an hour of ranked to feel comfortable again.
6:45 this happened to me like two months ago, I took off the rubber cap and use the plastic joy stick alone. I was planning to glue back the rubber but I haven’t yet !
Hey, wayton, what are your specs when it comes to setup. I went from switch to xbox for rocket league, and want to get into PC gaming. Also, banger video man! Much love, keep it up.
I don’t often comment on videos, but wanted to make a point to say this one was sick. Thanks for the info as always, thanks for everything you do and inspiring me to grind even what we might consider to be the boring stuff! 💙
My favorite thing to do is to score while defending your goal since im in champ 1 tripple commits are pretty common on close plays so I can hit alot of these goals
It would be really neat if in training packs they could add npc cars that would attempt saves or go in a pre determined path just like the ball setups.
Hey @Wayton Pilkin, Great video. Also watched the other guys video. I haven't been improving that much since I came back from a break from RL. It has been 2 or 3 days. Already seeing results. Keep doing videos like this please. The only thing I would change, maybe put at the end of video, shooting from both sides but the entire shot. Perspective: Squishy had this video where he said, "I remember when I was wowed by that twirl motion that car do sometimes." But he didn't show how to do it. There are just some shots that if you dont turn your car or whatever correctly, you give up if you are not show how. Time stamp: 5:06 part of the shot is cut off. One more thing. Can you put in an overlay? There is one shot that I get once a day on accident. My2cents
LOVE YOUR VIDS! They help me a lot as someone who wants to improve but cant justify all of these steep coaching prices that are out there recently. TL;DR I would LOVE a video on your findings after long practice sessions of ALL aspects without playing, because I sometimes do it myself and want to know from higher level players how I should tweak/improve my training/warmups. I would LOVE another similar video. One where you practice ALL aspects of rocket for 3 days(instead of just warm up sessions). Some days I just dont feel like playing in games and I practice for 3-5 hours instead of queuing games. Ill load up rings maps and/or shooting packs and/or defensive packs etc. I have personally felt those sessions help, but not if I do that THEN play some queued matches. After playing that long, you just need a break. What I have felt was just general improvement. Just generally doing everything a very little bit better. I am low/mid Diamond, up from mid/high Plat, where I was stuck at for a long time until towards the end of season 6.

Addressing 10:48 to 11:13 is Total Truth ...💯 but how often have we all been in a match after winning 3 to 4 in a row and the NEXT GAME... the WHOLE game seems completely off, even though the scoreboard shows no lag/ bad ping..., & every teammate agrees the timing and response is OFF for this session. An old Sony / PS2 game [ SOCOM II ] used to have this splash screen before logging online to play.... " GAME PLAY MAY VARY " i really wonder if we put too much faith in the performance of the software and networking to always play 100% consistent. i would be a Cool experiment to Preprogram BOTS and the BALL PATHs and watch the replay of 3-4 games to see if the Bots were always on the Mark!
I think another reason they don't practice, and why practice (at least in the short-term) doesn't seem to help, comes down to two things: 1) In games you have to position yourself to take the shot, and in those practice packs you often know where the ball is coming from (or have plenty of time to react, without pressure); and, 2) in games you have to adjust on-the-fly in response to the position of the other player(s). So, at best, those training packs only let you practice the angle and maneuvering when taking a shot, not the shot as a whole. It's like practicing field goals in football (Freedom-edition) or free-throws in basketball: In those scenarios there's no blocking opponent, so regular practice is quite helpful. But practicing passes or lay-ups in the same context only helps hone mechanics, because in the actual game there will be opponents looking to interfere. To properly practice these things in all three games, you need an opponent of some sort, and in RL the best way to go about this (AFAIK) is to just play games. If someone could make a training pack where a roughly-car-sized square would move around the goal box, so you don't just have to line up your shot but also account for the opponent's position, it would probably be far more helpful come game time. To make it even more realistic for standard, a second "opponent" should approach the ball at a steady pace so you have to also account for their movements when taking the shot.
Dude wayton you might be my favorite rocket league youtuber lmao. This video was so fun and insightful to watch considering i don't really practice rocket league that much.
Not gonna lie, while watching this video i realised shooting is more important for me to learn than anything else (excect rotations) as a low rank player, thanks a lot Wayton
While you were streaming we created a playlist together for good vibes! Was curious if there was a way to see the playlist or add it on Spotify somehow? Great video! Practice paying off, you love to see it!
That's an impressive level of concentration to be able to do that much training alone and stay motivated! I get bored after 10mins, let alone 5 hours! I would think the #1 thing to keep this up long-term would be a teammate/coach. You need someone to hold you accountable and motivate you (I know NBA players take hundreds of shots per day in training, but I'd say they rarely do a day of training where they are just alone with the hoop). Also, I think Bakkes mod allows you to cut off sections of the net (so you're forced to hit top left, top right etc.), not 100% sure on that, but I believe I've seen someone do that.
TL;DR: My consistency in running a shooting pack at least once per login has led me to 60mph(96.5kph) as my standard for shooting. If it's slower, I consider it a bad shot for myself. It's average for me to shoot around 65mph (100kph is 62.1mph) multiple times per pack or game, due to my dedication to shooting practice. I began running at least 1 shooting and 1 defense pack every login as a warmup. Defense usually saw the most effect toward building my consistency in aerial control, both in launch speed/accuracy, as well as flight control. Second most effect would be in ball placement/control. BUT, shooting? I would spend hours shooting, just trying to perfect a shot that can't touch the ground after the timer. My placement, my car control to make angles, my shot speed, everything. Exponential increase. I now won't pass a shot in a training pack if I can't shoot it over 60mph (96.5kph), which has become my standard for a good shot even in game. It's not uncommon for me to hit shots in the 70mph range (112.6kph+), and sometimes I'll even solo an aerial shot that breaks 80mph (128.7kph). I'm not certain if that's impressive in the higher tiers of gameplay, but for me (Hardstuck diamond duos for 2+ seasons, play champs/grand champs pretty regularly in pub duos) my shots average half again as fast as the shots that I see other players usually hitting.
I usually practice those training packs and yes, they help a lot eith precision, I am diamond 3 in 2s and have a precision of a c2, I can hit very weird angles (lets just not talk about what keeps me in diamond 3)
I also think another reason that wasn't touched here is...Yeah, you can practice training packs day after day but man, there's so many factors when it comes to an actual comp game that I feel like it doesn't really add to anything practicing the same 10 shots over and over.
Squishy is very consistent in shooting, you can also review his games on his platforms and replay to see how he gets in certain positions and how he gets it off to the most accurate shot that the opponent will struggle to defend
I didnt watch all the way through before saying this, but when I coach people in other games, I am adamant that it isn't about time invested, but it's simply about taking away the right knowledge from the practice itself. A person who practices only once a week can certainly beat someone who practices all week if the first person is learning correctly. I even played at Majors in Tekken just off this mentality.
If you want to practice for a long time, you can also listen an audio book while playing, it's much easier to not get bored of training because your brain is distracted with the story
Hey wayton! Absolutely love your videos. Keep up the very nice content. I hope you can make a video about 1v1ing a player but both players cannot use a specific mechanic.
I know im just C2-3 on a good day, and pros shooting is way better than mine might ever be, but I find shooting practise very helpful. Sometimes I'll grind out shooting for a week(waiting for mates/queues) and it even surprises how accurate I can get
oh? you can air dribble you can flip reset and you can do perfect ceiling shots... but can you hit the ball on net every time? no then whats the purpose of learning them. edit: im unranked and decided to do what you are doing in this video i hope it will make massive improvements (next edit will be saying how much better i get)
Two variables that weren't mentioned were the latency and camera angles. Those play a big difference in where a shot ends up. I'd like to see someone practice, then play only LAN games to recreate the EXACT timing/angles. Camera angles are just what they are, unpredictable...
I have a pc by 3 weeks, and with coco's training map i improved more in these 3 weeks than in 8 years in this game. I think is literally the best skill to train for consistency, i was d3 in jenuary, now i'm almost gc1
I can't air dribble properly, can't flip reset, can hit an occasional ceiling shot, but I'm Champ 2 because I can shoot. It's easily my strongest skill and catches so many people out. No one expects a banger of a shot from nowhere.
Your video frequency is impressive and with so much quality. Are you editing your videos? Congratulations for your job, you're the best TH-cam Content Creator from RL and others games too

Also cool that they are from different regions which could differ in playstyle and shooting, interesting to see different views on this. Nice idea!
I wouldn’t say it means more, just that at GC and SSL consistency is expected/required to get to that level
@@Chuggo. not necessarily gc or SSL dude. I'm plat 3 too. These weird angle practice helps,
cause no one expects it.
Open nets.
They happen to anyone, everyone, and at any time.
Watch out for the open nets.
8:45 lifting the bad rubber on the analog and using 2 drips of super glue would also work, you should do giveaways of your old controllers, i bet they are easy to repair
Great video Wayton. You analyze things from a realistic, methodical approach and your videos help improve the mindset of others. Keep it up!
Wayton is the only person to teach the exact ways to train in RL than the other channels showing you a custom pack to train, BUT they don’t teach you HOW to dribble or be better, they just throw packs at you, but wayton explains the ways well that i got better by listening to him
im surprised how wayton's dualsense broke pretty quickly when my 6yo dualshock 4 is still going strong with barely any issues
Really great videos as always, brings me a great feeling that I practice shooting every day!
Music while training is the best tip to give anyone, can instantly turn a frustrating training session into just fun chill practice
Much love, keep it up.
to add to what virge suggested, you can also go for streaks, like, a shot is complete once I hit top left 3x in a row, top right 3x in a row
Best video I have watched in months you really are my favourite content creator now by quite some way
Pros still struggle to make open nets.
I was literally trying to work on this today. Appreciate the video.
Imagine a baseball fielder practicing catching balls that go slightly into the stands for hours instead of practicing routine ground balls
My2cents
i guess i really am the crazy one for spending 3 hours on the shots you shouldnt miss pack every day before i got to diamond
I think 3 days straight is just beyond the first hour.
I could've never done that .well played
You know you just made me happy

Let’s F’en Gooo. I always look forward to your work Wayton. Always so well done regardless of the specific subject.
Addressing 10:48 to 11:13 is Total Truth ...💯
but how often have we all been in a match after winning 3 to 4 in a row and the NEXT GAME...
the WHOLE game seems completely off, even though the scoreboard shows no lag/ bad ping...,
& every teammate agrees the timing and response is OFF for this session.
An old Sony / PS2 game [ SOCOM II ] used to have this splash screen before logging online to play.... " GAME PLAY MAY VARY "
i really wonder if we put too much faith in the performance of the software and networking to always play 100% consistent.
i would be a Cool experiment to Preprogram BOTS and the BALL PATHs and watch the replay of 3-4 games to see if the Bots were always on the Mark!
Really great video Wayton! Big fan, 1st time caller but overall solid video. Keep up the great content you do.
Very interesting. Thanks for investigating/experimenting! :)
Wayton you have helped me soo much in rocket league
Thanks a bunch
I doubt you’ll read this Walton…. But I rewatch this video every time I go on a training bender.😂
I use that shooting mod all the time. I notice a massive difference in my shooting precision the more that I play it
I love your videos bro keep ‘em comin!
Nice vid as always
Haven’t even finished yet bro
@@waggle6points Me either but it’s great so far
I didnt watch all the way through before saying this, but when I coach people in other games, I am adamant that it isn't about time invested, but it's simply about taking away the right knowledge from the practice itself. A person who practices only once a week can certainly beat someone who practices all week if the first person is learning correctly. I even played at Majors in Tekken just off this mentality.
Bro what a super insightful video. Just such a obviously completely fundamental part of the game that I myself had not considered enough clearly.
If you want to practice for a long time, you can also listen an audio book while playing, it's much easier to not get bored of training because your brain is distracted with the story
I’m on epic games is there a good alternative except training packs?
Hey wayton! Absolutely love your videos. Keep up the very nice content. I hope you can make a video about 1v1ing a player but both players cannot use a specific mechanic.
I know im just C2-3 on a good day, and pros shooting is way better than mine might ever be, but I find shooting practise very helpful. Sometimes I'll grind out shooting for a week(waiting for mates/queues) and it even surprises how accurate I can get
Your commitment is amazing - as always!
Thank you!
oh? you can air dribble you can flip reset and you can do perfect ceiling shots... but can you hit the ball on net every time? no then whats the purpose of learning them.
edit: im unranked and decided to do what you are doing in this video i hope it will make massive improvements (next edit will be saying how much better i get)
You should talk to retals on this. Always got consistent power and placement with basic shots to get past pros
Two variables that weren't mentioned were the latency and camera angles. Those play a big difference in where a shot ends up. I'd like to see someone practice, then play only LAN games to recreate the EXACT timing/angles.
Camera angles are just what they are, unpredictable...
This takes dedication
I have a pc by 3 weeks, and with coco's training map i improved more in these 3 weeks than in 8 years in this game. I think is literally the best skill to train for consistency, i was d3 in jenuary, now i'm almost gc1
I can't air dribble properly, can't flip reset, can hit an occasional ceiling shot, but I'm Champ 2 because I can shoot. It's easily my strongest skill and catches so many people out. No one expects a banger of a shot from nowhere.
Great content man
Your video frequency is impressive and with so much quality. Are you editing your videos? Congratulations for your job, you're the best TH-cam Content Creator from RL and others games too
I do my own editing!
Lmao I wondered why I recognized the beat at 2:08 and realized it was cause I made a stupid song to it :P Good vid! :)
Most high levels players most likely don't practice their shooting because they either focus more on setting up a teammate or don't play 1v1 often
"Remember your basics, Zuko!"
Wayton you should probably use the bakkesmod training pack shuffle shot ability to get even more variety on your shots.
The best content that has increased my shooting power to 2% to 20%
Monday! *checks calendar...see's holiday weekend.* Close enough!
Got caught up watching RLCS lol
Gotta try this, looks promising to be honest. Great vid!
