  • This is the true story of how flip resets evolved in Rocket League. A cinematic Rocket League documentary for the purpose of appreciating the complexity of this beautiful game that is Rocket League. So many hours go into the making of these documentary videos and this one in particular I put even more effort into than normal. Enjoy!

The flip reset is known by many professional players to be the hardest base mechanic in Rocket League. It took more than 2 years from when it was officially possible in the game for it to be pulled off in the pro scene for the first time. As soon as it reached that level, it quickly worked its way to becoming an essential mechanic in the RLCS. Scoring a flip reset in the RLCS is one of the most difficult things to do. Against the best defenders in the world, it’s hard to find anything that can get by them. But the flip reset is one of the most effective tools used to score even against the best in the world. This is the story of how they came to be. From just an idea someone had on reddit, to a beautiful and deadly mechanic being pulled off by the best in the world, this is the story of how flip resets evolved in Rocket League.

Incredible ingenuity to see the potential in this mechanic so early man. I’m sure no one ever believed that people would be hitting triple resets and double taps from landing on the ball upside down in the air when commenting on that thread. I always look back at these moments of discovery as “golden eras” of a game when everything is still so mysterious and theoretical. I can still feel the excitement for what’s to come when reading your post, even 6 years later when I know the outcome haha

Hey Wayton, beautiful video. Very well edited & informational. However, for these types of videos a timeline in terms of month/year would be a lot easier to follow than "RLCS season XX" for the more casual audience such as myself. I'm not sure when all of those seasons started/ended, so it's hard to establish a timeline. & prior to any of the RLCS seasons mentioned it was hard to realize how slow/fast everything was evolving since no dates were mentioned. I might suggest in future videos of a similar genre to show the month/year in the corner for every new event discussed. Thanks for the content!

As someone that just started playing rocket league within the past year, learning how to flip reset on command is a long term goal. I’m D2 and improving but I always felt behind my fellow diamond players mechanically so it’s reassuring to know that it took even the pros 2-3 years to get flip resets down to that level. It just looks so fun

Its wild to have watched these streams at the time they actually happened and now be watching them again in a "history of" video.

Actually, half-flips were discovered back in 2010 with SARPBC, Cole & Stumpy from SubparButInHD made a throwback montage using various clips from the community and a top level Belgian player named wesh92 was already using them consistently.

The RL community isn't always great a naming things, but "flip reset" is both an awesome name and significantly better than "late flip restore via ball".

    Liked and subbed great vid.
That Alpha fake flip reset goal is one.of the most intriguing aspects of this mechanic and how it changed players psychies. Such a beautiful mechanic and well worth highlighting.

It's crazy how it took pros so long to learn the flip reset originally, but in present day that has changed, where platinums hit 54 resets in a row. What an crazy trick.

I find it amazing how people once given some tools too have competitive fun, they will immediately start to maximalize their performances to new peaks. One year someone discovers something, next year it's nice but who cares, 2 years and everybody is mesmerized by the perfect dance of movement. I like to look at football in this way, how someone learns new dribble skill and everybody needs to learn how to do it and defend it.

i remember when people discovered these, majority of the community thought these would never be used in rlcs due to how nobody was consistent at it, now even plats are doing it

Absolutely insane that this was just a funny little gameplay change that the devs wanted for underpass. Also you are the best at making these videos❤❤❤
