- In this video, I react for the first time to John Farnham performing a cover of 'Help' by The Beatles (with The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra). In this video, I analyse his amazing performance, explain and demonstrate his vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great.

😊it's not a reinvention by him, he's just redoing the "Little River Band " version from 20 yrs earlier .... now that's an iconic Aussie band (which he was in) .... but I remember seeing Little johnny Fareham doing Sadie and raindrops 😂😂
To give some perspective, John did this as the second encore after a two hour concert. He is a legend.

The cool thing about the audience singing by themselves at the beginning, is that they were actually singing the melody that John uses as opposed to the Beatles original, even though John had not yet sung it. They all knew his version.
Think she is the only person I have heard have a go at him for letting the audience sing along
@@shauns5680 be kind. She's there to provide specialist analysis of John's voice, which is difficult when the audience takes over and John listens to them. It was right at the beginning and the fairy hadn't watched the emotional "sharing" of the song like we have many times. She didn't say anything derogatory. It was fascinating listening to her technical analysis of the physiology of John's "noise making". I guess that's the ICU nurse in me.
@Shaun S she was being tongue in heels there champ. Yeah Farnesys connection with the audience is unparalleled imo. Wouldn't be surprised if the complete arrangement was to have the audience sing those 3 times.
Great analysis miss, even to correct yourself at the end saying how John mightn't even be planning those distortion moments, I agree, I think he just feels just as much as he is conscious of using certain techniques. Very self aware and honest of you in your great observations 👏🏻
John Lennon said when this version was released that he had wanted it sung as a ballad originally and he and Paul gave this version their approval.

Up to whispering Jack Down on the Border with little river band was his greatest vocal song and he’s so young he’s voice is electric that’s Freedom & Burn for you, Pressure down has 12 million views now it’s to hard to choose they are all so good and they were needed at the time like Midnight oil he sensed what the country needed❤
John was born in UK
John has said that he has never been formally trained. He is basically a naturally talented singer. He has a unique voice, that is just epic.
John sings all genres beautifully. ALWAYS GO LIVE to get the full benefit. He is currently recovering from mouth cancer treatment including jaw reconstruction, so we are lucky to have over 50 years of music from him to enjoy.

The thing about Farnsy is that it's all natural. At this time he was a heavy smoker too! He started out as a teenager and got a little raspier over the years as he matured. It goes without saying that he worked damn hard to be the best that he could be, but he is simply gifted! He can sing anything. He delivers quality performance after quality performance and is always grateful and super respectful to his audience and those on stage with him. An iconic artist and the most amazing human being! He tried to retire so many times but the audience wouldn't let him! Hahaha. What a legend! Get well Farnsy! 💕
Funny you brought up Celine Dion. She actually cites John Farnham as one of her biggest inspirations growing up. There is a video on YT of her singing John's 'You're the Voice' in Melbourne in IIRC 2018. John joined her on stage to sing the song and at almost 70 years old, still sung it in the same key with the microphone still at times at least a foot away from his mouth due to his power (his microphone technique IMHO is as good as anyone). One of the notes he hit even startled Celine. You could see Celine was genuinely star struck singing with him and in an interview a year later mentioned that moment singing with him is something she'll never forget. High praise indeed!

@Matt Bond what part are you saying she did heaps in the states? She's sang You're the Voice quite a bit in concerts over the years, however she has only ever sang it with John that one time in Melbourne in 2018, which was what I was talking about.
She also bowed to him, giving him the honor he truly deserves.

John was two years into his apprenticeship as a plumber before he had his first hit with "Sadie, the Cleaning Lady" in 1967 as an 18 year old. He must have practiced his singing while he was working on toilets and fitting taps. Jokingly I have heard him say "I do my best singing in the Shower" and non-jokingly that he still has all his plumbing tools. We have grown up with John in our lounge rooms since the black and white TV days of the late 60s through to nearly now. Similarly we grew up with the Bee Gees on our TVs from 1960 through to the mid-seventies.
Three songs: You're the Voice, Burn For You, A Touch of Paradise.
Also John didn't actually have a choir for that concert. What you're hearing is his 3 extremely talented backing singers (Vanetta Fields, Lisa Edwards and Lindsay Field) and the crowd. That's it!
In my honest opinion, Vanetta Fields is by far THE best backup singer BAR NONE. EVER. THAT GOOD.
@sopwithpuppy she would also do anything for John after he took her under his wing and gave her the environment, the love and the respect she deserved after some of the treatment she received from previous artists. She even said when she retired, John only had to call her for help and she'd be there beside him in a heartbeat. You could see that love and respect for each other when they sang that spine tingling version of Amazing Grace together with Lindsay.

He’s The Voice and is just simply amazing. Even more than that he is a brilliant entertainer and a bit of a comedian! He is a wonderful human, always singing his heart out when this country was in drought, floods or fire to raise money for those who needed it. He also entertained the troops when they were overseas. He loved his Aussie audience and would wave and point to those he knew in the audience. He loves us and we love him, we have grown up together with him. He encourages his audience to sing along with him so they go to full voice! He loves his band members and always highlights them, in this performance he tells the audience that Mark Dennison is playing sax and then the MSO at the end of his performance. His band and backup singers have been together for decades. He is our favourite son!
John never had singing lessons. Everything he does is a God given talent. Celine fan gushed when given the chance to sing this with John. So who's the goat? I would suggest his 1992 live performance in Sydney of Gethsemane to start, then When Something is Wrong With My Baby, with Jimmy Barnes and Diesel. The Hey Hey it's Saturday live version is brilliant.

Farham's big solo hit was "You're The Voice", and with Little River Band, it was "Playin' To Win". Either of those songs will thrill you, and would make good video fodder for the channel. Yes, he always has that husky rasp, no matter how insanely high he goes in his range. One of my faves!

I was in that audience. Farnsy is the best pop vocalist I have ever heard. And his stage presence is without peer. Magic night.
I believe the crowd were chanting "Sadie" which was a big (novelty) hit for him back in the late 60s. He wasn't keen on doing it later in his career but did every now and then.
It is Sadie. There will ALWAYS be people shouting for Sadie.
Apparently this version came about because John was learning to play the song on the piano and liked the slower version. He can sing anything from rock to opera. There is a video of Celine Dion fangirlibg on John when she was touring Australia. Apparently she had been following him on TH-cam for 20 years. She included his song You’re the Voice in her tour in 2018. John joined her on stage in Melbourne.

What a shame the world never got to see this talent . Iam 70 and had never heard of him until a month ago and i grew up with voices like Tom Jones Englebert , Roy Orbison and all the great sngers after them but this man is a cut above them in sheer vocal talent.
John Farnham is one of my all -time favourite singers. You really must listen to more of his wonderful repertoire. Start with "The
Voice" or "When The War Is Over". Then go to Jimmy Barnes with "Stone Cold" ft. Joe Bonamassa. Both John and Jimmy are legends in Australia. There's so much talent there that we've not been exposed to. Shame!
You have to watch his "When the war is over" from his "Last Time" concert. The 3rd verse will literally give you goosebumps.

Such a great interpretation of the Beatles'classic! Definitely made it his own and much more epic in my opinion. Our John can literally sing any genre.
John's first hit as a teen pop idol was "Sadie (the cleaning lady)". He pretends to hate it and teases the audience that he will/won't sing it. They tease back by chanting "Sadie. Sadie" for it. He rarely sings it, but when he does, it is done in fun. If you listen to Gethsemane, where he is singing as Jesus in the musical Jesus Christ Superstar, he doesn't utilise the distortion on the notes he sings in this song, but he fries on the top note (G5?) which fits the emotion of the song at that point.

Being Australian, Farnsy has always just been there. My favourite John Farnham song is One (is the loneliest number). Funny thing is that in that video you are seeing him 22 years into a 50+ year career. Get well Johnny, cancer is a bitch. We all love you.

But do you know what is so funny about everyone's analysis of Johns technique? It's that he is NOT trained! He hasn't ever had a minute of vocal training, he is literally, the voice!

You have been listening to and watching Australian John Farnham who is a singing genius. He has a huge vocal range, sings in over 20 genres, has a very successful career spanning six decades, is a consummate showman, has sung with a number of famous singers, is respected throughout the music industry and loved by the Australian public.
Lovely video once again :) John Farnham has one of the greatest voices of all time, such a beautiful blend of warm pop/rnb tone and stylings with a rock rasp, belt and range. I would highly suggest listening to his performance of ‘Bridge over troubled water’, it is beautiful and so stupidly impressive.

John has just turned 74. Last year he underwent an 11 hour surgery to remove cancer from his jaw. He’s apparently doing well but I don’t think we’ll ever hear him sing again. John has given us 50 plus years of pure magic.

Known for his Ballard's rock theatre opera its hard to pick a song as so many different types
He has 5 decades of no1s in Australia 🇦🇺 was still able to hit notes at 73 but we won't see him sing again as recovering from cancer of the jaw where they removed and reconstructed his jaw but his was in good spirits going by family and that's another reason he's loved by Aussies just a great bloke no one has a bad word for him in the industry either he's a real people person
If you watch more of his music you'll notice he always stands back and brings a band member forward like the saxophone guy in this
My suggestion would be his AC/DC cover along way to the top with Melbourne symphony orchestra and conductor and orchestra are having a ball just for that reason only because no matter what he sings it full on nothing left on the plate

So even though John never travelled over the pond much he was extremely well known in the entertainment industry by alot of big stars
Through everything John always remained himself and has fun also a bit of a comedian it's pretty much a Aussie triat we all have fun and take the piss out of each other for a laugh that's when you know a Aussie likes you and he never lost it didn't matter who he was around

The rasp started to fade as time went on and he stopped chain smoking.
Check out his Last Time concert, his voice was in PEAK form and he was having a ball. Goosebumps every time.
You MUST check out his "Gethsemane" from his JC Superstar tour 1995 - "Granada" (with Anthony Warlow) & "Please Don't Ask Me" (with Olivia Newton John) from the Main Event Concert Tour - and his other songs "You're The Voice", "Through a Tear", "One", Reasons", the one he wrote "Burn for You" and the song he thinks of me whenever he sings "Have A Little Faith (in us)" [yes there is a story, he calls me "Red in Blue"] He does soul, country, musical theatre, pop, rock, and anything else you want to throw at him!
INJECTION: No choir just his usual three backing vocalists Lisa Edwards (blonde) Venetta Fields and Lindsay Field - all solo performers in their own rights! (and maybe some of the rest of the band) but most likely the crowd singing along (we always sing along!)
And yes he's never really been "Trained" he just sings! I guess he's now been trained along the way cos 2020 age 70yo he was still hitting those high Bb's just as powerfully controlled.
SADLY it is unlikely he will sing again having undergone surgery to remove oral cancer tumor which took part of his jaw. He is recovering but probably won't finish recording the album the surgery interrupted. However after giving 250% to a gazillion performances and a million songs over the last 55 years, I think he's done enough for us all! I'm So So glad the world (via TH-cam) are discovering him and giving him the world accolades he so richly deserves! 💫

Australian legend that can sing just about any style
Do you know what I love the most. When a real Singer, and especially a Vocal Coach realises in the first line this is going to be special, and then they get the shivers as John starts to expand his voice, and then when they start moving their heads in an exaggerated way to try and imitate the same vocal cord, palate, mouth, throat and nasal volumes and movements, or trying to get their ears or eyes to follow the notes up and down the scale, while opening ears and eyes to try and absorb every emotion.
All of us mere mortals just get a tear in the corner of eyes because we don't understand what he is doing to us. lol.
Anyway here is some of my recommendations to start the journey.
This concert was advertised as John and his Big Band in typical Aussie understatement, it's a 100+ piece orchestra for crying out loud. lol
A couple of songs worth checking have been mentioned below, plus these are worth a look also.
The reason you haven't heard of him is because the US music industry is a closed little club. When John Farnham went to the US they didn't know which genre to put him in so his US promotions manager got him a couple of gigs in a little jazz club, where the MC introduced him as Jack Phantom. Couldn't even be bothered getting his name correct, so being a bit disheartened he wandered home to concentrate on his loyal fan base. The experience did give him inspiration to write a couple of good songs about missing his familiy, like this one.

You have just witnessed a performance from the vocal master of the second half of the 20th century.
John can sing just about any genre and has a 3+ octave vocal range. He’s certainly up there with the best male vocalists of all time and I think you’re right, John’s uvula swinging is involuntary and gives his voice a very recognisable sound that permeates through all his performances. Oh. If you loved this, check out his song, Burn. He wrote it for his wife, it is about how he feels when on tour for so long. Every time he sang it at a show he got very emotional and quite often tears ran down his face.

The crowd were calling out Sadie as a joke at John's expense and hoping they could get him to sing it. Sadie is a very early song by John probably 1960's which hasn't aged well. John doesn't sing it but his audiences always ask for it just to take the piss. The start of this song sounded like it could be Sadie which was why I think John had that smile on his face just before he started to sing.

Listen to Farnham in Little River Band in the early 80’s. There was a concert with him done in Melbourne with these guys. I’m 59 and have sung in bands all my life and was heavily influenced by metal. I got the chance to hear John with Little River Band in Joliet Illinois on this tour and to date, it’s by far the best vocal performance I’ve ever heard. Listen to Cool Change, Reminiscing, We Too…Heck.. if I were you, I’d listen to the whole thing. You’ll be glad you did. Amazing!! John was young and on fire. Pretty much my favorite vocalist ever. Also, icing on the cake are the harmonies LRB provide. Spot on beautiful!! Now I have to listen the that concert. 🥰✌🏻

Thank you. I've been longing for you to find John. I'm not going to ask for more. 1989 John is all over the internet now. Real John had a 13 hour operation for mouth cancer. I just hope he'll be able to talk properly when he has recovered, so his jokey self can still exist in his family life. He's given us plenty. He doesn't owe us anything.
P.S. I've been to John concerts. His fans interfered so much. He always handles it with grace.

You're the Voice is the classic John Farnham song that EVERY Australian knows and tries to sing along with in spite of the fact that it's physically impossible for most of us (John is a glorious freak of vocal nature). I'm always proud to see a foreigner reacting to John's music, because while he was content to be appreciated just in Australia, I feel like it's unfair of us to keep him to ourselves.
For something very different you should react to his performance of Gethsemane in the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar". It shows John's versatility and acting ability.

Him singing amazing grace with vanetta fields and also something wrong with my baby with jimmy barns both live, both you can tell he’s been singing for hours and it’s still insane. The footage of your the voice from this same concert is my fave just because he yeets a mic stand and catches it without looking while singing is heckin smooth.

Glad you loved John Farnham. He is so famous here in Australia. Please, please, please listen to his song "You're the Voice". It's like an anthem here. It's brilliant. I'm sure you'll be impressed. Unfortunately a few months ago John was diagnosed with mouth cancer, had major surgery, and will probably never sing again. It's so heartbreaking, for someone so talented. 😢
If you loved 'Help', you are going to lose your mind on 'You're the voice' and 'Playing to win' from the same concert. In fact, anything that John does is stunning. We wish him a continued recovery from his health scare.
I was at this concert and I think it left the biggest impression on almost every group apart from Pink Floyd Pulse.
Suggestion for vocal look at John for me would be gethsemane. He played Jesus in the Australian version of Jesus Christ superstar and it’s pretty mind blowing. Also his song let me out had lots of vocal gymnastics in it I think

You should also listen to his performance of "You're the Voice" from the same concert. It is also so very powerful and one of the reasons why he is called "the Voice" there in Australia.
I think at the beginning when John says “this is an oldie but a goodie”, the crowd is chanting ‘Sadie’. This was John’s first hit back in the 60’s.
A couple of other singing masterpieces from The a voice is him singing Black Dog and better still Gethsemane on the final night.

It's said that John Lennon heard Farnham do this version and said THIS is how that song should have been performed. You can't get any more endorsement than that.
A good example of the quality and vocal ability of Farnsey, you should listen to (there is no video as it was quietly recorded by the sound engineer only) his concert warm-up version of Zeppelin's Black Dog. It's an epic example of how good he really is.

He ranges from Lead Zeppelin, Black dog , way over to Grenada , an opera with Anthony Warlow , then back again to love songs like Please dont't ask me with Olivia Newton John . Another good one is his duet with Jimmy Barns , When something is wrong with my baby. All are outstanding.

Aussie here also and probably a technically terrible front man for a fairly average rock band still at 48. I had the privilege of seeing John in concert a few times as a kid, "Burn for You" still gives me chills. Just an acoustic guitar and Farnsy. It was him that inspired my love for singing, never had a singing lesson, know nothing about music, just go by sound and feel. Got into it at 16 when my mate bet me $20 I wouldn't try out for the school musical. Scariest thing ever, but 30 years later and haven't looked back. There is still nothing that makes you feel alive like singing in front of a crowd, even as an old bugger doing house parties and local festivals.
Have to admit FVM, I'm crushing on you a bit ;) Just love your channel, your personality and I'd love to hear more of you singing. Easily my fav online vocal coach. Bring on more Aussies!
