For me..... Nuri's are one of my most "respected" brands and best tasting. I watched a Video here on TH-cam about the Nuri Brand and the Portuguese Canning Company that cans the Nuri's. They are a very old company and have people working there for generations. They do everything by hand and are very picky about their ingredients suppliers and even make their own Tomato Sauce. There are literally little old ladies who have been with the company for 40 years, who cut, clean and hand pack the fish and the spices and even hand wrap the paper on the outside of the can. I've never had a bad can or bad flavor of Nuri's. They are definitely "Pricier", but I never worry about the freshness, oil or quality. Great video.

@SardineExpedition I found Geisha Brand today. I think it was mackerel. On a side note, picked up two bunch of shine muscat grapes at a ridiculously low 9 a lbs. TheN I forgot to check the main store for fish brands.
Love your channel. Just got some Fishwife sardines with hot peppers recently. Enjoy the comparisons, had no idea there was so much variety out there. My sardine IQ has been greatly expanded!
This episode reminded me how much I used to like the Nuri brand, so I'll be looking for them next trip to Sprouts and/or Gelsons. Today I broke out an old can of Trader Joe's smoked sardines and it was poor to mediocre - never again. I managed to finish off the can with the help of Nori paper, making Japanese tacos with sardines, feta cheese, chili sauce and sauerkraut with bits of avocado. I sprinkled some Japanese mackerel flakes on top a couple of them to try to further mitigate the poor Trader Joe's sardines. The Nori paper idea came from this channel, and I am grateful for it because it opens up all kinds of possibilities. Nori paper is an entire universe of its own, including some versions that are seasoned. It's an underappreciated delicacy - or culinary supplement, so to speak.
Your Nori creation sounds good!!! I’m glad you’re enjoying experimenting with it!! Which trader joe sardine did you have? I tried the smoke one in the purple can and was underwhelmed with it.
@@SardineExpedition Same - high smoked, purple can. It's off my list - one and done. Most Trader Joe's stuff is pretty bad these days - I rarely go there anymore. I think the company was sold several years ago and has gone downhill.
I thought their sardine in water was better than the oil. I don’t gravitate towards water sardines, but found that one decent. I have a can of their trout too, but haven’t tried it yet.
I love your channel. Many years ago I would eat a fish product called blind robins. They were dried, smoked and salty herring, I think. They seemed to be cured in soy sauce or something similar. They were sold in bars and convenience stores across the midwest. They were shelf stable and sold in cellophane packs from a display card. Oh man, were they tasty. I dont find them available anymore. Not the brand I remember anyway.
Thank you, Jeffrey! 😆I had someone else mention those before as well! It’s a bummer you can’t find them anymore. I wonder if there is someyss similar out there?
My local grocery store don't carry those brands, I'll have to check Amazon when I get the chance. I made some tuna salad today. I like to eat them with tortilla chips. Occationally, I'll eat them as a sandwich. Happy Holidays Heather!🎄🌟✝️🎅🏻🤶🏻
Happy Holidays to you too!! I’ve never done that with a tortilla chip, but that would be really good!! Love salty tortilla chips that have a hint of lime!
@@SardineExpedition I don't add any salt to my tuna salad, yup the tortilla chips add enough salt for every bite. I combine canned tuna, mayonnaise, minced green onions, minced celery and black pepper in my tuna salad.
@@SardineExpeditionI wonder how your local grocery store would leave old, slimmy green onions on the produce counter? I would have a talk with the store manager or go to a different grocery store.
Tried Porthos Sardines in Tomato Sauce Today. It was good. Maybe add some hot sauce. I had it with a Greek salad with greens, pickled onion, olives, quinoa and tomatoes. It went very well with the salad.
Had the second can of Porthos. This time the yellow can. I ate it with a salad. Very mild olive oil and a nice looking fish. I mopped up the olive oil with garlic bread. At $4.59 CDN it's a decent price.
Actually, I was inspired by you to buy my first tin of Nuri brand. I've been kind of a King Oscar guy for so long.... I haven't tried the Nuri yet, but when I do, it sounds like I'm in for a treat. Sardines are a great way to start the day.
Hi Kathleen!! I really enjoy the Brunswick gourmet brislings. I did a review on them. They have a unique texture that I love. Amazon actually sells them in single cans, so you can try them without having to commit to a large pack of them. King Oscar tiny tots are another one I enjoy.
Nuri in lemon haven’t tried them yet. Going to have to order some. Out of all the sardines I’ve tried there about my favorite. Although the video you had with the gourmet Brisling are up there too. Great video.✌🏻
I like the comparisons. As you said, remembering what something tasted like yesterday or last week is not the best way to decide which flavor profile is "best". Nuri sardines are ridiculously expensive where I live, so I am stuck with cheaper brands, which are still really good. The whole point of sardines is that they are super cheap protein and Omega 3s. Pairing cheap sardines with delicious, home made sourdough bread lifts even cheap sardines up.
Nice video, the only way to compare is side by side.........One canned sardines you should try is: Angelo Parodi Portuguese Sardines in Pure Olive Oil......delicious....And less expensive than Nuri..........$32.00 for a 10 pack...............I am having fun watching you..........I wish you a Merry Christmas..........🌲🌲.........Stay warm........😘😍
@ Good morning Heather. My name is Don, you were correct. I was asking you to compare and taste test “jarred” anchovies and sardines. I use the a lot since you can take a couple out. Thanks again and have a Merry Christmas 🎁🎄
@@donjohnson6634 Thanks for clearing that all up!!😅😅. No, I haven’t tried the jarred sardines! I want to order them, but I’m terrified they will break in transit here. That would be BAD!
saw a documentary about the Nuri cannery in Portugal and it is the oldest cannery in Europe (per the documentary) and much of the work is still done by hand.
I went to an Eastern European store. I got this haul: Adriatic Queen Sardines, Baltic Sprats (Smoked in Oil), Riga Gold smoke sprays in oil, and.. and .. Riga Gold Cod Liver!
Winston and I have the same hat! I haven't tried either of these but I'm going to give them a shot. Typically, I don't do the Lemon thing on any of my fish even at a restaurant because I don't want anything to interfere with the taste of my fish. I'm weird like that as I love the taste and smell of fish even very strong fish. I recently dumped a girlfriend because she didn't like seafood......lol and complained incessantly about it........roflmao! I mean, c'mon how could that work out?
🤣🤣 Winston has great taste in hats! I understand about the lemon. The Nuri lemon isn’t strong, but it’s there. No one complains about the smell of sardines, but I’m the only one that eats them. I couldn’t handle a captain complainy pants either. 😆
I ordered a 10 pack of the blue porthos (the one in brine) when I was trying to lose weight and they rly impressed me. Still far from the once in oil but rly good for in brine.
@@jordan.ellis.hunter I’ve got a can of that to try and I’m glad to hear you liked it! I had the same thought that the brine might be a step up from the water! Thanks for letting me know! Excited to try it now!😁
For my birthday this year, my son bought me a CASE of 10 cans of Nuris of all kinds. Regular, spicy, extra spicy, with tomatoes. (I've decided I don't mind mustard or peppers or even Teriyaki sauce but keep my 'dines out of tomatoes!)
Nice gift!!! I’ve only tried the King Oscar in tomato so far and found it quite boring. I did put it on pizza and liked it that way. Did you try the Nuri in tomato? You didn’t like? I have a can to try still.
@SardineExpedition I mean, Nuri in tomato sauce is still Nuri. So, there's that. But it was the least favorite of the Nuris and I wouldn't get them again. Or any 'dines in tomato sauce. Just doesn't work for me
@ Good point! The tomato one I had needed seasoning and hot sauce badly! The tomato just doesn’t excite me, but so many brands carry a tomato variety, so I guess there must be people that love it. I’m just not sold on it yet.
@SardineExpedition Oh ho! I just watched the old "Fish Heads" video again! I haven't seen that in 40 years, probably . It still takes me to the same place it did back then........🐟🦐🦞🦀
Have you tried Tabouleh as a side dish for sardines? It's a mixture of parsley, tomato, onion and lemon and oil. The aroma of fresh parsley is the best.l
@@SardineExpedition I was going to ask if you've ever tried Fish Wife! I've seen them at Whole Foods, but they are something like 8 bucks a can! 😬I'm waiting for your review before I drop that kind of money! 😉
I just tried to order some this week and then they cancelled my order. They wouldn’t respond to my email, but I’m guessing they don’t want to ship to Alaska. At least they refunded me.
The porthos interestingly have less contrast than the nuri. I would be the nuri are from deeper water. I love drinking the oil too, you can pour it in a rice or porrige pot too if you want to distribute it. The top bottom contrast is a deep water camoflauge adaptation. I bet on deep water but the low contrast I bet has unique flavors too.
Sup Wintson and Sardine! Not all that weird imo to try the oil like that, i often bring a piece of bread when i have some canned fish if it doesn't smell too fish, and dip it in the oil Italian style. Quite good! Althoug... now that i think of it, i am kinda weird.... so hmmm yeah, that is a bit weird. Weirdo! :p Oh! i tried the Tajin on some sardines and you're right, it's REALLY GOOD!!!! Hi Heather! I just tried the Spiced Porthos - red can and was quite disappointed. Did you know Porthos was one of the Three Musketeers? Anyway, I bought them at World Market for $5.29/can. I only bought one and glad I didn’t buy more. Mine were soft and fell apart too easily, almost mushy and hard to pick up with chopsticks. There were four in the can, not very spicy and for me the flavor just wasn’t there and off a bit. I had such high hopes LOL!!! I’m anxious to get your take on them.
@@PaulaBrook-o8e That is such a bummer!!! I have a feeling I might feel the same as you when I try more. I don’t think they can compete with Nuri, but we shall see. At least now you know and can put that sardine money towards one you love!! Thanks for the heads up!!

Your sardine fun is just beginning!! That’s the best part!! Yes, costcos 2-3 choices get boring quick. I can’t believe how many options are out there!! Have fun trying new ones!! Thanks, Doug!
Yes, I’m sure it did. The oil didn’t taste lemony at all. The oil in the Porthos didn’t taste good, the Nuri was delicious. Dip some warm bread in it!😋
Apart from flavour, the lemon counteracts the off fishy smell. TMA is a molecule with a lonely pair. Putting a hydrogen on the line pair takes away the smell.
I think that Nuri has their oil produced especially for them. Idk about the lemon affecting the color, but I got a small bottle of it with some bundle of sardines and it was delicious! I wish I could buy more, but it doesn’t seem to be available.
I get most of them from Amazon. Stores are limited here on variety. I’ve had some luck at Asian markets and also independent health grocery stores-but their prices are steep.
question: Did You " purchase " all of the sardine cans on the shelf behind you? How many cans on Hand ? do you have a count? only curious, Love the channel
@@buckytravelsplaces7581 yes! It’s all my own purchases. I haven’t had anything sent to me. Oooo I would have to count! It’s a constantly changing number as I eat them. I do need to reorganize it, so when I do I’ll count em up! 😁. I’m happy you like the channel! Thank you!
@@SardineExpedition I like your channel...im just not a fan of Nuri i bought a 10 pack off amazon a few years ago the sardines were loaded will scales.
I saw a review a while back with scales too. These didn’t have them thankfully. That would change my opinion too. We will see if any of my other cans do, but so far so good. Thanks!
The serving sizes are actually essentially the same; it’s just that Porthos gives the drained weight of the fish, while Nuri goes by fish plus oil and other contents.
Hi Heather. I'm interested in trying both of these but they're very difficult to find. I guess everyone goes with Amazon but I've heard a lot of stories about expired or close to expired food coming from Amazon. If the best by date on a can of sardines is less than two or three years out, they've been sitting around. I know you can buy directly from Nuri, but the shipping charges are steep because they're coming from overseas. Any suggestions? Thanks!
FWIW, I've been looking for premium or even "daily driver" sardines for some time now and the only place I've found Nuris on the shelf is Cost Plus World Market (a place I'd never enter but I think somebody on another tinned fish channel mentioned they do have tinned fish). I've yet to find Porthos on the store shelf (and for premium fish, I'd rather try it once before I go ordering a 12 pack off of Amazon --- I'm sure Porthos will be good but is it really worth the effort when I can get Bela all day over at WF or Sprouts?)
@@tomtrask_YT I hear you 100%! In fact, that was why I started this TH-cam channel. I wanted to branch out because the sardines in stores here are limited. I’d find decent prices on Amazon , but you have to get 12 pack most of the time. So I’d look up reviews and couldn’t find most of what I was looking for. So I said, surely I’m not the only one with this issue lol and decided I’d be the guinea pig and just start trying everything. 😁
@SardineExpedition On a slightly different topic. Have you ever found a bulging sardine can? I found one this morning. Not sure if it was physical damage or bacteria.
@SardineExpedition I just finished the cod liver. I just had it on top of some garlic bread and with roasted red pepper soup. The garlic bread was actually stronger than the liver. It did smell like cat food. I did almost throw up once. Overall though, not bad. Mixed in with egg and mayo, it would be good too. Really like a pate.
You almost threw up?!?😆😆. Well that isn’t getting me excited to try it!! Were you psyching yourself out and then it wasn’t as bad as you thought? Oh man! I just got an email my order of the cod liver is delayed! I’m nervous now lol.
Porthos is a classic Portuguese brand with a long history, but this can didn’t quite hit the mark for me. The olive oil was great, but the sardines were a bit too mushy with a metallic aftertaste. Definitely better paired with other ingredients than eaten solo. Solid for a quick fix, but not a standout in the world of canned fish!
Thanks for the comment! I probably would have liked the Porthos more if I had eaten them alone, but side by side with the Nuris really showed how much I preferred the quality of the Nuris. I could definitely eat both though!
Nice!! I’m super bummed because I found a US store that sold that brand and I ordered a bunch. They charged my card and then cancelled my order. Won’t respond to my email as to why. They did refund my card, but pretty lame. I guess because they don’t want to ship to Alaska even though it allowed me to check out and charged $30 to ship. I guess it wasn’t meant to be.
@SardineExpedition These are very good. No fishiness at all. The sauce is tomato, and the spice paprika. Just a little heat, after. Total was $5 a can CDN. 200 gram can. They also had mustard. If you want to try them, we can work something out, later.

@SardineExpedition I found Geisha Brand today. I think it was mackerel. On a side note, picked up two bunch of shine muscat grapes at a ridiculously low 9 a lbs. TheN I forgot to check the main store for fish brands.
Luv the spine comparison
😁😁Thanks, Dan! Grosses some out, but I just love the spine! I can’t resist!

It was an enjoyable review!!!
@ you gotta try the ramon pena sardines
Love your channel. Just got some Fishwife sardines with hot peppers recently. Enjoy the comparisons, had no idea there was so much variety out there. My sardine IQ has been greatly expanded!
Hi William!!! We appreciate that! Thank you!!! I just got that same box for Christmas and will be reviewing it soon!!!😁😁
I tried to get green onion today . All were slimy 😩
@@SardineExpeditionI wonder how your local grocery store would leave old, slimmy green onions on the produce counter? I would have a talk with the store manager or go to a different grocery store.
Oh it’s all the time here in Alaska. Takes so long to get here it’s all nasty quick. Rotten peppers, brown lettuce. Ugh
Tried Porthos Sardines in Tomato Sauce Today. It was good. Maybe add some hot sauce. I had it with a Greek salad with greens, pickled onion, olives, quinoa and tomatoes. It went very well with the salad.
That sounds really good!!! I’ve been adding hot sauce on my KO tomato and I like them much better now!
Had the second can of Porthos. This time the yellow can. I ate it with a salad. Very mild olive oil and a nice looking fish. I mopped up the olive oil with garlic bread. At $4.59 CDN it's a decent price.

Hi Tom!! Thank you! I’m happy you’re here!
Actually, I was inspired by you to buy my first tin of Nuri brand. I've been kind of a King Oscar guy for so long.... I haven't tried the Nuri yet, but when I do, it sounds like I'm in for a treat. Sardines are a great way to start the day.
Oooooo I’m excited for you to try them! Which one did you get? Please let me know what you think when you try it!!!😁

Which are your favorite and best value dear ❤
Hi Kathleen!! I really enjoy the Brunswick gourmet brislings. I did a review on them. They have a unique texture that I love. Amazon actually sells them in single cans, so you can try them without having to commit to a large pack of them. King Oscar tiny tots are another one I enjoy.
Interesting comparison & Winston approved 😊
Thanks for watching!!!😁
Nuri in lemon haven’t tried them yet. Going to have to order some. Out of all the sardines I’ve tried there about my favorite. Although the video you had with the gourmet Brisling are up there too. Great video.✌🏻
Thanks, John! I was happy to see Amazon still had the lemon available. Looks like a bit more expensive, but I’m happy I grabbed one to try!
@@fletchoid Thanks for letting me know!! 😊The sourdough bread is a good idea!! I found Nuris at an Asian market, but they were very expensive.
I have a can of the Angelo parody, but it’s boneless skinless. Just notice that 😩
I agree that the Angelo Parodis are a good “everyday driver” brand, even if they’re not up to Nuri standards…
Tried Adriatic Queen Safdines in Lemon and Olive Oil. They were really good! Only $2.39 a can. There was about 5 pieces.

saw a documentary about the Nuri cannery in Portugal and it is the oldest cannery in Europe (per the documentary) and much of the work is still done by hand.
That is an awesome documentary!! Pretty cool how they still do things!!

Oooo let me know your thoughts when you try them! I’ve got a few Riga gold varieties on the way! Excited to try them! 😁
@SardineExpedition The cod liver, I am particularly interested to try. It is very high in Omega 3.
Yes! I have some ordered! I’m excited to try it too!
I've always liked the scales on sardines, and in my opinion you can't beat Nuri sardines
Nuris are definitely a special one! 😁

Heck yeah!!! They are so good!! I could eat a can a day if I had a stock pile lol.😆

Ahhh very interesting!! The Nuris are so pretty to me!!! Good ideas on the oil. Thank you!!!
Sup Wintson and Sardine! Not all that weird imo to try the oil like that, i often bring a piece of bread when i have some canned fish if it doesn't smell too fish, and dip it in the oil Italian style. Quite good! I haven’t, but I LOVEEEEE tamales! Intimidated to make them though.
Great video, $5 seems a lot, compared to other meat in weight, but if you think it's worth it.
Yeah it is steep. Definitely not something I could afford to stack up and eat every day. I’ll be sad when the few I have left are gone. Thanks for watching, Matt!
I’ve been missing out all my life I’m going to have to spend a little more time checking out different brands I’m in a sardine rut from Costco what a shame but I’ll make up for it
Your sardine fun is just beginning!! That’s the best part!! Yes, costcos 2-3 choices get boring quick. I can’t believe how many options are out there!! Have fun trying new ones!! Thanks, Doug!
I wonder if the lemon in the nuri affected the "color" of the olive oil affecting the color comparison.
No doubt it affected the olive oil taste...
Interesting!! Neither one smelled fishy, so that was nice! Thanks!
You got a bottle of their oil? Now I feel like I’ve heard this! 😃
Where do you get all the different varieties of sardines?
I get most of them from Amazon. Stores are limited here on variety. I’ve had some luck at Asian markets and also independent health grocery stores-but their prices are steep.
“No two Sardines are alike” there’s wisdom for you…
😁😁😁. Thanks for watching!
question: Did You " purchase " all of the sardine cans on the shelf behind you? How many cans on Hand ?
do you have a count?
only curious, Love the channel
@@buckytravelsplaces7581 yes! It’s all my own purchases. I haven’t had anything sent to me. Oooo I would have to count! It’s a constantly changing number as I eat them. I do need to reorganize it, so when I do I’ll count em up! 😁. I’m happy you like the channel! Thank you!
The Nuri has lemon the Porthos only has olive oil not a good match up...as the Nuri is going to have more flavor because of the lemon.
Yes, but I the difference was so drastic in the oils I don’t think the lemon was the only reason. Sorry you didn’t like the review.
I’m going to need your input on a video coming out soon because it raised this exact question and that was my thought.
Thanks!
I ordered both from Amazon. I just checked the expirations and they are all 3-4 years out from the best by date. Hope that helps! 😁
@SardineExpedition, thank you for your reply. I guess I'll take a chance with Amazon. 🤞
@@SardineExpedition, I have to tell you, I'm so glad I found your channel. I've been binging on it the last 2 days. Lol 😊
I think the skin texture difference in sardines has a lot to do with the age of the fish at the time they're caught
I love whatever age the Nuris are then 😁😁.
Your dog is so cute
He says thank you!!☺️
FWIW, I've been looking for premium or even "daily driver" sardines for some time now and the only place I've found Nuris on the shelf is Cost Plus World Market (a place I'd never enter but I think somebody on another tinned fish channel mentioned they do have tinned fish).
We love both but usually get Nuri due to the price.
Going to try cod liver today. You might enjoy this Dr. Berg Video comparing Cod Liver to Sardines, nutritionally.
I have watched that! I have cod liver ordered to try! I’m hoping I like it!😁
@SardineExpedition On a slightly different topic. Have you ever found a bulging sardine can? I found one this morning. Not sure if it was physical damage or bacteria.
I haven’t had a bulging can yet. Was it way past the best by date or stored in warm temp? I would definitely not eat any can that was bulging.
Is Porthos that $44 gold can that I just watched a video on?
I don’t know anything about a $44/can. It’s definitely not the one in this video. Yikes that’d be expensive! 😅
@SardineExpedition TH-cam hypiest sardines ever
Today, I am trying Herring in Paprika Sauce. Rugen Fisch, Germany.
Yeah, I had ordered all those! They sounded good! Hope you’re enjoying them!! 😁. I’m trying a new can today! I’m not spilling the beans yet though!
