How Did Governments Put a Stop to the Pirate Menace?

  • As much as the golden age of piracy is romanticised and immortalised in literature and media, the specific time period did not last long. The golden age lasted roughly from 1650 to 1730 - a mere eighty years; a drop in the ocean in historical terms. Pirates, over the course of their short tenure, caused huge problems for nations and governments operating and trading throughout the Caribbean, and, as such, said governments were keen to put a stop to them as soon as they could. This was no mean feat - many pirate crews were operating across the Caribbean throughout the golden age, and, even though the age eventually ended, pirates still persisted - and do persist today. When you have many skilled teams of marauders sailing through your waters, you're inevitably going to be faced with numerous challenges - challenges that need to be dealt with crafty schemes and tactics.
In today's video, we will be exploring the eventual downfall of the pirate menace across the high seas of the Caribbean, towards the end of the golden age. What kinds of methods did local governments employ to ensure that people were put off the idea of becoming pirates? What kinds of punishments were in store for pirates who were caught? And how did piracy, as we have commonly come to know it, meet its end? Sit back and relax as we take you on a tour through time to explore the end of piracy.

Really great video! The end of the Golden Age sounds like a great era for a historical fiction setting. So glad I found this channel, I love pirates and have been looking to learn more about them on YT, and I can’t wait to learn more about pirates in the future!

Is it ever possible to stamp out the pirate life entirely?
Not as long as the rewards outweigh the risks

Maybe I'm missing something here, but does anyone else feel like 80 years is a rather long time?

It's not any more possible to stamp out piracy entirely than it is to stamp out opportunism entirely and to have an omnipotent police.

If the risk isn't worth it, and their basic needs are seen to, you'll never guess how many people are willing to accept law.
I can't be destroyed, but it can be eradicate.

A really interesting film would be one person going back in time with merely one 50 cal machine gun (with unlimited ammo) 😄

Time and legend has made them appear lofty and attractive. Inreality, they were filthy animals who were criminals on the run. A Gang on the waters..badly needed Dental hygiene and soap and water..nothing appealing about that..in fact, many people don't realize that most of them didn't possess a three quartered hat. It was a Huge Deal.to own and wear a hat! They were cumbersome and heavy. They were mostly worn for portraits.
