I feel Gojira is one of those rare bands who not only make good music, but are fantastic for the scene as a whole. They bring success to smaller bands on their coat tails. The same can really be said of most genre leaders, but genre leaders are rare, and we should appreciate the ones we have.
@@heavytherapy You and I both. I'm currently deciding how high this album will go on my album of the month list, but the answer is definitely "quite high".
Gojira introduced me into Death metal when I first listened to Flying whales and The art of dying. After that Meshuggah came, I started to like Slipknot a lot more and now I listen even to Dying fetus or Infant annihilator. They unlocked gutural singing for me and that allowed to realy like other genres that I was curious for but couldnt get it just for the singing. PD: Fortitude is fucking amazing and I think The chant is underrated
Gojira actually was pretty instrumental for me getting into the more extreme side of metal as well. The two hurdles of getting into extreme metal are really the harsh vocals & noisey production. Gojira does a great job of having harsh but approachable vocals, and very clean mixes, which allows people to wade into the harsh vocals a bit easier.
The chant is too awesome to be criticized for being 'radio friendly'. It's not my favorite track but I think all the musical idea and sound design is perfectly fits into its core sad message.
@@feigner374 I was surprised how it good at producing quality of every tracks. So I searched about producers and I have found that Andy Wallace mixed the album.
Great perspective and review. Spot on about getting into more extreme types of metal. The 1st time I heard Opeth, I thought, yeah, not my cup of tea. But after listening to other bands that got me into heavier music, I absolutely love Opeth and I’m always searching for something new and heavier now.
I think Opeth is extremely similar to Gorjira in terms of being similar levels of accessbility and a band which gets people deeper into metal. We only get so many of those all time great acts lol
Well said first segment of ya video dude and i agree (to an extent) Fortitude is ok, reminds me of The Way Of All Flesh in some ways, but a lot more catchier, even if i came away feeling like i've heard it before. But you can bet it'll turn up in a lot of end-year album lists, deserved though.
Hey Jordan, thanks for stopping by! I think this is the absolute best move Gojira could have made. It's both innovative and moves their sound forward, without being too radical of a change such that it alienates fans. More of the same from Gojira is still excellent music.
I've been listening to metal for nearly 20 years now and never have I ever heard how one dives deeper into metal like the way you described. I suppose you could apply that to any genre that can seem unaccessible, but it perfectly describes that process that goes on.
Thanks daffyrwt! I'm glad I could phrase things in a way you've never heard before! I agree, this totally applies to almost any genre, though metal is somewhat unique in its level of inaccessibility lol.
Thanks for coming by, Josh! I agree, one of the best aspects of Gojira is how many different sounds from metal they manage to fuse together and present in a single, accessible package.
An interesting review man love how you go into the perspective of a person that discovers extreme metal. I guess this album has introduced the newcomers to Gojira and other bands that Gojira were inspired by
Thanks for stopping by, Jamie! I wanted to not just rehash what every other reviewer was saying. I think Gojira is one of those rare bands which not only makes great music, but is great for the metal community as a whole and brings other metal acts success along with them.
It's actually a fantastic listen straight through. The pacing is great, and none of the tracks feel like duds, in my opinion. Some people gripe about the chant, but I think it's perfectly placed in the middle of the album.
Hey Epaule, thanks for taking the time to comment! I'm glad you enjoyed the review, it's a bit of an unusual one, but I'm glad some people are enjoying it.
@@feigner374 Maybe unusual, but it's good to take a step back and look at the whole picture. And that's what you're doing here. You're saying quite comprehensively something I was trying to put into words for myself about the importance of this album for the genre as a whole. And I thank you for that because you gave me excellent ideas for when I'll try to talk about metal to non metal listeners.
Thanks, man! I'm not trying to be a music critic. I want to lower the bar of accessibility into various genres by contextualizing and explaining the appeal of it, and thus I felt this was an important album to talk about.
i ordered this album earlier today can't wait to get it delivered. i also ordered the ruins of beverest new one and sonic youth washing machine album and mastodon crack the sky and the new motorpsycho album what's just come out
That's awesome! Noise rock is one of my favorite genres ever, so I certainly appreciate that taste in Sonic Youth. And hey, if you're fond of Ruins of Beverast, you might also enjoy the new Varmia album. It's Pagan metal (though it feels a lot like blackened doom), and it was my album of the month in my best of March video!
I’m not gonna lie my love for Death, Opeth, Atheist, Cynic and Tool led to me eventually loving and Discovering Gojira. Kinda glad I got through those Bands 1st since they introduced me to lots of Technicality, experimentation of different song structures, different styles, time signatures. learned new things along the way. Which led to me learning and enjoying this type of music. Also this new Gojira album is very good, still need to give it some more time and patience to take everything in I hear much like every Gojira album. This album for sure might have some of the most experimental Aspects of any Gojira album so yeah gonna take some extra time for this one.
It's interesting how experiences differ like that. This is an album which just clicked for me immediately, but I've also listened to a ton of Gojira, and so this was just more of the stuff I crave from them. L'enfant was big for me when I was getting deeper into metal, so they've had a soft spot in my heart ever since.
I agree with the first part of your video. Don't dive into Deathspell Omega/Imperial Triumphant if your'e new to metal. I'm in the minority on Gojira. I liked their first two albums quite a bit but find their last few rather boring. Much like Lamb of God post-Sacrament, they put three or four great songs on an album and the rest feels like filler. Gojira start with the excellent one/two/three punch of "Born for One Thing", "Amazonia", and "Another World" and then six or so songs with riffs/vocals I've heard before and completely lost interest. That being said, I'm not new to metal and have been listening for 35 years so my ears are more seasoned LOL! Dig your Spotify list. That's a nice 'welcome to metal' list for the uninitiated. Cheers!
Thanks, Mostly Metal! Everyone will have a different experience on this one lol. I've never knocked 'heard it before' as a reason something can't be good, and I'm pretty fond of the album all the way through. Gojira have definitely mastered their sound, so it does very much feel like more of the same from them at a certain point.
Ey, it happens! A lot of people enjoy this album, but it obviously can't be everyone's cup of tea. Perhaps it'll grow on you, and if not, then there are a whole lot of other great albums out there!
Ooof. It's unfortunate that it wasn't what you were expecting. A lot of people enjoy it, and maybe it'll grow on you as well. And If not, oh well, there's plenty of other great metal out there. Every album can't be for everyone.
I absolutely think Fortitude is both a masterpiece for OG metalheads AND new fans discovering heavy music.
