      Julie! Keep making progress and focusing on what’s important to you. Minimalism for you will look different when compared to others. So don’t make that comparison. Sounds like you’re making a ton of progress so far and I’m proud of you. Keep it up! It’s a journey for sure but like you said, you’re committed to it! I’ve been thinking about this just this week- I need to put my phone down and clean my place up. My life has been on hold since my mom died 9 years ago. How have I lost 9 years to nothing. The state of my home and my life are appalling for someone of reasonable intelligence and health

    • @wk8678
      @wk8678 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I understand how you feel. The next Jan 31 will be the second anniversary of my mothers death and I am so sorry for your loss. It’s hard to lose our moms. But I also realized through that loss that life is not guaranteed and we need to live for ourselves now not 20 years from now. So I am working on really making 2023 about living my life. I hope you can find that too.

    One of your best videos I’ve seen. Thought provoking. I wonder at what point we’ll collectively acknowledge the negative impact of mobile phones for our mental health and relationships. I’m a child psychologist and I genuinely think the increasing numbers of young people diagnosed with high-functioning autism is partly attributable to screen time inhibiting the development of social communication skills. Thanks.

    • @amyli092
      @amyli092 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're not wrong, and I do think that social media has an impact, if not a strong one. Every person, young or old, develops at their own pace despite what textbook statistics would say. I don't want to sound too naive because I know social media did affect me some when I was a teenager and throughout my 20's, but I guess my argument comes from being able to distinguish a more developed mind in youth, both mentally and emotionally, and understanding the severity of different illnesses without the use of technology.
      I feel as if what's missing though is the tools for better relationship-building as well as communication, and this NEEDS to be addressed more often in society. Autism, anxiety, depression, ptsd, etc.... These disabilities takeaway a person's ability to communicate effectively and build healthy relationships, but that doesn't mean that they can't still have that and try to maintain them.

    • @craigwthomson
      @craigwthomson ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for replying @@amyli092 It’s too complex an area to do it justice here in the comments, but I’ll try to expand a little.
      ‘Doom scrolling’ is addictive and can be simultaneously a symptom and cause of poor mental health. Ronald’s point is that if you’re scrolling on your phone, what are you not doing? Taking part in physical activity? Connecting with each other? Being productive? Sleeping? All things that would benefit your health and well-being and general quality of life.
      I regularly ask young people to check their daily ‘screen time’ in the settings section of their iPhones. Some of the time, it’s in double digits (hours) with 200-300 pick-ups (interruptions/ distractions) per day. That includes their learning time in school and late at night. Even if you argue that what they’re consuming online is totally harmless, that amount of screen time has to come at a cost, right? These are kids who have been referred to the psychologist, remember…
      There is a separate point about children born with inherent social communication difficulties (ie. the genetic basis of Autism, specifically ‘high functioning autism’) who are then doubly disadvantaged because as infants, they’re not socially motivated, interaction is difficult and they prefer watching cartoons or playing games on a device rather than playing with peers. That becomes habitual and by the time they start school they’re some way behind their peers, lacking the pre-requisite social skills to learn and play within a group. Perhaps they’d always have had some level of social difficulty, but the impairment is significantly greater because socialisation has been limited and they end up referred for neurodevelopmental assessment. There’s no definitive test as such, so the diagnosis is given based on their presentation and a developmental history taken from the parent.
      Screens are not the cause of autism, but they’re exacerbating the symptoms in what might otherwise have been a non-clinical population.
      I find it fascinating that here in the U.K., children diagnosed with autism often talk with an American accent. It’s so common that it’s almost considered a symptom of autism by itself.
      It’s a fascinating area and there’s loads of research out there for anyone who wants to read up on it, but I’m mainly reflecting my own hands-on experience with children and families.

    My room is so cluttered I have been called a hoarder by my sisters ,I keep things for ever and keep getting new things too 😮 and it’s 100% me holding onto somethings,in that it’s due to emotional and mental clutter.A manifestation of procrastination and failure.It started when I had a low period and feeling things were out out of my control.
    I hate it and see how much anxiety it brings me ,makes me hate my space and a daily reminder of failures and my lack of control.
    I want to throw it all away but keep making excuses.I need to write this whole video out because so much truth.

    The most minimal I lived was when I studied abroad in France. (And even less so when I studied abroad in UK for six weeks… I didn’t even bother with cooking utensils there and had a smaller suitcase). I had a small dorm with just the bare essentials. Less than 2 weeks worth of clothes. 1 coat. 1 plate, 2 glasses, 1 fork spoon and knife. A skillet and pot. I reflect on that mini fridge with enough food for 3-5 days max. A comforter, blanket, maybe 2 pillows I don’t remember. Toiletries. And my laptop and a couple notebooks and pens for school. It’s wild I didn’t care about any of that… just having fun in a foreign country and making friends. That’s what was important to me.
    Now since buying a new house my husband and I are drilling into our possessions and donating a lot to goodwill. We’re donating 300 books to the prisons so they can be put to great use by people in need. There are many things I don’t NEED but I recognize that what I WANT and value is made valued by the space around it. I want more plates than my husband does for hosting friends and family. We could always get disposable, but I love the set and it’s more environmentally friendly. These are the things we really get down to after what isn’t important is stripped away.

    I used things and cluttered my room exactly in an attempt to define myself. I must say, it did help. Through all these things I've seen what I am reaching out for, or what things lost their appeal fast. I started paying attention to my actual interests, opposed to forever doing what I believed I should. If I never had these things, I think I would find it impossible to understand what I actually like... But now I do need to declutter, getting rid of everything that didn't stuck or that stuck for a short time, of some things I am no more :)

    Great video. Very ease to put into perspective and relate. I love the ideas of minimalism and do much of it at home. HOWEVER, my husband is not into it. Any advice for combining lifestyles??

    Can you make a video on how you stay clutter free with the kiddo? You mentioned that in another video but would like to hear details

    Android users: settings --> digital wellbeing and parents controls. You can use this to set timers on your apps. You can also set up a weekly report to show you which apps you've used most in that time. This is how I know I wasted nearly 7 hours on Instagram, which I don't even like anymore, instead of using my Japanese learning app 🙃

    My question is why would anyone put down a phone that has cost them $1,000+ or making payments? That is like owning a car and not using it and still paying insurance. I think people justify adding apps and using the phone more because of the cost they spent on it.
    P.S. I am one of those people that justify my usage with cost. I have thought about using a dumb phone for daily usage and a smartphone for travel. We shall see.
