      Yup and Brad Delp, RIP, didn't realize there wasn't anyone else in the band after roughly 8 months. Only one song was recorded in LA off this album with the entire band. Unfortunately, I couldn't tell you. There is a good documentary from Japan I believe with English subtitles. If you're a fan, it is worth checking out.

      strange that Barry Goudreau still sounds like Boston more than Tom does (Barry is the true sound of Boston, thats why Tom wont sue him)...Tom thought about it when Barry went solo and when he also did RTZ. Both sound like Boston. You cant sue for a sound you didnt invent. All Tom does is sue people and have hissy fits and not record until he gets his way

    IMO, one of the greatest records to ever have a needle layed upon it. The album was certified gold two months after its release, and sold another 500,000 copies within 30 days. It was the highest selling debut album when it came out in 1976 (17 milion copies sold) and remained so until Guns & Roses, Appetite For Destruction was released in 1987 (18 million copies sold) and still is the number 2 all time selling debut album. I was in high school when this came out, it is and will be embedded in my mind forever.......

    I was born in 1969. Imagine being a kid becoming a teenager while Boston, Kansas, Styx, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Rush, Foreigner, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and other anthem rock or arena rock bands were following up on the gems of The Who, The Doors, The Stones, Led Zeppelin and Hendrix. How can my generation not be moved by passionate and highly refined rock-n-roll! We had no choice because the music was that good. It is forever a part of what has influenced us as individuals.
    Suggestion: "Feels Like the First Time" by Foreigner. It's on point throughout.

    The best music ever recorded in someones basement on equipment the guy invented and built. I love Boston's story. Record company says "We like your band and want to give you a record deal." Tom Schulz says "Great." RC - We'll fly you out to L.A. , get you a good producer and start the process." TS - "Yeeaahh no. I need to write and record in my cellar." RC "That's f'n crazy and not how it's done." TS "Well that's the only way it's gonna happen." And the rest is glorious rock and roll history. Boston's unique sound is because Tom with his MIT degree designed and built the effects because he couldn't find them anywhere else. That's New England ingenuity for ya. And yeah guys this is definitely progressive. Mother flippin' cutting edge!

Another great story is how their current lead singer Tommy DeCarlo was working at Home depot and had a couple covers of theirs on TH-cam and Tom heard one and called him. Look it up. Really is an awesome story yeah. Tom Scholz is a mastermind. One of the things he built was what he called the "hyperspace pedal" in which he engineered a pedal by fusing components of a Dunlop Wah pedal (i think it was dunlop) and a certain delay pedal. That's that "warbly", "spaceship" sound that you often hear before/after certain guitar phrases. One of the most unique sounds I've ever heard and I've always loved his overall approach to music too.

    Ryan & George - I don't think many Progressive Rock fans would consider this Progressive Rock, however, it isn't far off. I'd describe it as sophisticated feel good Hard Rock with strong Pop sensibilities in the vocal melodies. And, yeah, you can't help but feel good when you listen to Foreplay/Long Time. I've been listening to this song for 42 years and I STILL smile when I hear it. It never gets old, it never gets tired, and it never gets worn out. I saw Boston at the Gorge at George, Washington about 95-96. No opening band. They played for over two hours. Somewhere during that, Tom Sholtz comes out in this long green and black cape and starts playing Phantom of the freaking Opera on this huge pipe organ of a thing while the dry ice fog is covering the stage and the sun is setting behind the stage over the Columbia River Gorge. Doesn't get any better than that. Absolutely best concert ever for me.

    Boston has one of the most unlikely origin stories. This is off of their debut album. For this album, the band seemingly appeared out of nowhere and dropped an incredible set of classic singles. Pretty much every song off the debut is worth listening to. I think "More than a Feeling" is one of the greatest singles of all time. Boston's debut held the record as the best selling debut album for years. Gn'R finally broke the record with Appetite. Boston was founded by Tom Scholz, an MIT graduate who was passionate about music but was working for Polaroid as an engineer. Scholz's friend Brad Delp, the vocalist in Boston, convinced him to pull together some demos. The result was this album. I think Scholz plays every instrument on the album with the exception of the drums. The album has some of the best production ever, Scholz invented a lot of the guitar effects and recording techniques used. Every part is perfectly played and fitted together like a Swiss watch.

    • @madcracker84
      @madcracker84 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't know they pieced the instrumental together from one guy's playing. Give me a new found appreciation.

    • @davemarshallmusic
      @davemarshallmusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oh yeah, Tom Scholz is an electronics wizard. No other effects, amps, distortion pedals, delays etc would give him the sound he had in his head so he just made all his own stuff, Rockman. Brilliant musician. Brilliant engineer. There’s some videos of him in his studio on TH-cam recreating several Boston songs on the fly. Interesting to watch his process and candidly discuss how he developed all the Rockman gear he used for the albums.

    • @johncogburn2590
      @johncogburn2590 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, just Brad doing the vocals, and Tom played all the instruments because it was recorded as demos. Eddie Kramer said it was presented to him as demos to for production, but Eddie told him it was perfect and to release it as is. :)

    • @neechee5150
      @neechee5150 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johncogburn2590 This is false. Tom did not play all of the instrument tracks on this record. Barry plays all electric rhythm guitars on Foreplay and Long Time. Barry also plays the lead guitar solo on Long Time. Fran plays bass on Foreplay. The band as pictured on the back of the record played every track on Let Me Take You Home and that song was entirely recorded in an LA studio. Brad even plays acoustic guitar on Let Me Take You Home.
      I also call bull on your claim that producer Eddie Kramer said what you claim. The reason being is when producer John Boylan heard the demo tape tracks, Boylan found that the drum tracks and acoustic instrument tracks were not useable for the record because as Boylan stated, they sounded "amateurish". Tom then hired LA engineer Paul Grupp to teach Tom proper mic technique and how to record acoustic instruments. Tom gives a directive that all drum tracks and all acoustic instrument tracks have to be re-recorded before the record moves forward. All drum tracks except for Rock and Roll Band were played by Sib. Jim Masdea played the drums on Rock and Roll Band.
      A good portion of the production work had to be done at Westlake Studios where the record was mixed on an API console by three people-Tom, Boylan and Warren Dewey. Tom did not have the outboard gear (noise gates, parametric eqs, compressors and expanders) necessary to really get the individual tracks where they needed to be and Tom's Dan Flickinger console did not have the capability to handle mixing or producing the tracks.
      If you want to do some additional research in to the real story behind this record please read the liner notes to the 2006 Scholz remaster of this record and the interview that producer John Boylan gave in Mix Magazine. Tom has not been the most honest and transparent person when he tells his story and his ego and narcissism have distorted and changed the real story aka the truth dramatically.

    Considering this album came out in what, 1976? This album was way ahead of its time. Every track was a hit, the band was just ahead of the game, and I say that knowing such masterpieces by other bands came before it. Delp's vocals, Scholz's guitar and keyboards, the rhythm section, everything was so on point and razor sharp, its insane. You just don't hear music on this level anymore except possibly by the classic rock bands that can still pull it off, and there are not many of those bands left.

    Tom Scholz was a fuckin production genius. The music and songwriting is incredible, but the most incredible thing about Boston, especially this album is the production. NOBODY heard anything so well produced and the quality of the recordings hold up as much today as when they first came out, unbelievable. Not to mention he built all the production equipment himself and it wasn't even done in some super high end recording studio. I had to give him props, just for anyone who doesn't know.
    I'm a musician, a bass player and I've done a decent amount of session work, recording on people's tracks and what not, and anyone I know who is into production/engineering sees Tom Schulz as a legend, and he is. He is and will always be HIGHLY respected in the music industry.

Ryan & George give great perspective with attitude that are worthy of respect. This song has to be my favorite George reaction so far. And my favorite Ryan reaction is to Metallica's song "one". Very entertaining to us viewers and keeps us coming back for more.

    You guys got me thinking about why no one had mentioned this before and I think I know why at least for me. The classic rock stations at the time played the exact same 25 songs in a row 24/7 of which this song was a part of. When you hear the same thing over and over it looses it's TRUE worth until you are sick and tired of it which is what happened unfortunately. I called it killing a song. You guys should do "Smoking' by them. Now it's been so long it is fresh to me again so thank you for that!

    Boston was pretty much Tom Scholz recording all of the music with Brad Delp singing. He recorded it in his basement and needed to put a band together to be able to sell it and get the band signed. Just shows the genius of Tom who went to MIT and developed the Rockman.

    • @williamknell864

      Did Tom play the keyboards too.
      I was pretty much starting out playing guitst when this album came out.
      The production and arrangememt is amazing, especially considering how homemade it all is. Sholz's guitar sound and signal chain is all his own creation too. ALL PRE-DIGITAL!!!
      Its just mind boggling.
      Seeing these guys encounter it this way, fully for their first time, really takes me back.
      My favorite musical experiences are this kind, where you get blown over. Its a wonderful naive feeling.

      Tom played everything on this album and recorded and put it all together in his home studio.But in order to sell it to the record companies he had to put an actual band together.Tom is a genius,two degrees from MIT and inventor of the rockman amplifier

      @@williamknell864 yes...anytime you heard organ on any song it was him. He made a killing on the Rockman Amp that was basically a small box the size of a "walkman" where you could get the gain of a full amp without the size of one. They later made Rockamn units so bands could play live with the same effect. He ended up selling it at one point...

      That's not entirely true. He played most of them, but give credit where it's due. Sib Hashian & Jim Masdea played ALL the album drum tracks. Barry Goudreau (gtr) played on it & laid down his own solos. Fran Sheehan played some of the bass tracks. And Brad Delp co-wrote Smokin' & all of "Let Me Take U Home Tonight". Tom is no doubt a genius & a great songwriter/musician, but Boston NEVER would've had their "sound" without ALL those guys TOGETHER. Speaking as a musician myself, it's never a one man show...

    • @neechee5150
      @neechee5150 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      w1ll3rd All of Brads vocals were recorded by producer John Boylan in a big name LA studio. All of the tracks for Let Me Take You Home were recorded by the band as pictured on back of the record in a major big name studio in LA. The record was mixed in a big name studio in LA. Tom knew and played in bands with Barry Goodreau for years before the 1976 Boston debut album was recorded. Barry introduced Brad to Tom years before this record was ever made. At that time Brad was Barry's brother in law. Barry plays guitar on multiple cuts on the record and the amazing solo on Long Time is definitely Barry. You will not find a performance of Tom playing the solo on long time. All of the drum tracks on the record were played by Sib Hashian except for Rock and Roll Band and that track was played by long time friend of Tom's Jim Masdea. Fran Sheehan plays bass on Foreplay. Brad plays acoustic guitar on Let Me Take You Home. Tom has a long demonstrated pattern of either omitting the contributions of others or greatly diminishing them.
