I'd like to say that you lucked out with the boat you bought but I think luck had nothing to do with it; I get the sense you knew what you were doing. Finally, I'd like to say, OMG, that Tayana 37 is beautiful boat! Safe travels
Great video, brilliant editing, must be a lot of work. Looking forward to your passage to Lanzarote and then your transatlantic. Stay safe and keep your spirits up, you couldn't wish for a better place to get stuck :-) I spent two months in Grenada re-engining a Baltic Trader many years ago, time of my life, hope you get to see Grenada, truly magnificent place.
Hi guys, you are spoiling us with some great sailing again. Nice shot of you two cosying up together under sail, thats what its all about ! You take care out there ! ... Going to watch it again now !
Loving your videos and you guys really are living the dream! Particularly living aboard fulltime. You're both young and doing this at the right time. I spent years touring Europe in motorhomes and my dream was to sell the house and go fulltime but it's easier said than done. At least by 60 i was able to retire and spend more time touring but in 2018 after a long tour, decided to sell my van and look around for something with more space....but mid 2019 i was diagnosed with prostate cancer and my world came crashing down. My motorhome was sold and i've given up ideas of going back to touring as i'm 70 now and scheduled to have surgery. So yes, make the most of your lifestyle as you just never know whats around the corner as i found out! Hey i sold one motorhome i owned to a sail boat guy like yourselves. He sold his house in Lancashire, then sold off everything else and bought an ocean going yacht. Spent the next few years crossing the Atlantic back and forth, met his wife in Bermuda, and they bought my van to do some touring when the yacht was berthed in Holland.
Another great one! The tall ship was moored in Portsmouth a few years ago next to me, we spent the evening drinking rum and singing on deck until about 2am, they had a load of musical instruments playing too, such great fun, but my 28 footer that I had then looked like a tender to the tall ship, they wanted me to climb up the mast, which I did (before the drinks) I'll always remember the night of fantastic hospitality!
It’s a bit late as you have already left to cross the Atlantic, but I use a kettle like this to boil water in heavy seas, to supplement the fixed stove/cooktop. The bars are brazed to the bottom of the kettle, and you hang it from the overhead so it can swing all ways. Gives hot food in a storm.
I’m sorry the photo didn’t seem to come through. It was a classic Bluet type gas camping stove, with the pot stand rods brazed to the bottom of a classic kettle. This hangs from the cabin ceiling, and can swing any direction. You can heat water, or anything else, that fits in the kettle, in any weather, a great moral booster in rough weather. I applaud your use of the fixed stove/cooker, and deep pots and fiddles. I sometimes wonder if gimbaled stoves were developed by armchair sailors. The spill something terrible when they hit their ‘stops’. PS always wear foul weather pants when cooking in weather.
Damn..... you guy's have steel stomachs....lol ... Been following along from the very start....Keep it up,!!! you guy's are doing Fantastic....and Belated Congratulations on the wedding...
Well, Salty Shipmates, another lovely video full of confidence and ease at the night sail. Lovely to see you enjoy rather than endure the sailing in good conditions.
Hello! Love watching you guys while we refit and prepare out boat. Wanted to mention, bikinis aren't only for fit models and you're living your best life so who cares! Keep it coming, you're helping my anxiety stay low while waiting for the marina to haul our boat.
Can feel the cold on your overnight sail! Hope you’re not trapped in Lockdown as we are. We walk by the river in Poole harbour and feel the frustration for all the sailing fraternity not being allowed out on their boats. Stay well when doing the Atlantic. You’ll be out of land’s reach for weeks at a time till you reach thé Caribbean. And remember there are pirates there as well. Well done.
😂 Ryan in a strappy top...now that would get you views! Love watching the sailing, missing it like crazy. Great vid guys, thanks for keeping us entertained xxx
@David Kopp It seems the wrong forum for such an opinion, but as you bring it up (and, with no offence to Elena and Ryan, we hope), we feel this needs a response - so here are some facts about "Bromberger Blutsonntag" (Bloody Sunday). On September 1 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland (including attacks on the city of Bydgoszcz), thus starting the Second World War. Polish troops held out in Bydgoszcz for two days, and the local German and Polish (Slavic and Jewish) civilian populations suffered Luftwaffe attacks. On September 3 and 4, fighting broke out between the regular armed forces and between civilians, during which time Polish and German neighbours were killed, sometimes by each other. This was a time of war, in a Polish city (in which Nazi German records show that there were civilian paramilitary groups and intelligence cells charged with supporting German army regulars and the destruction of German civil assets in the city in order to stoke the fires of hatred), during which Poles acted in defence of Polish territory against hostile forces. Please remember that Poland bears no responsibility whatsover for the outbreak or execution of the Second World War. By the way, "Polish", not "polish"; different words, different pronunciation, different meaning :)
Ils Tabac 11 mile Sw of Alacante , had a charming little fishing in the 70’s ( long ago) we sailed their from Alacante, that was my first time experiencing clear water where we could see the bottom the whole way , 100’ derp ( hope it’s still like that???). We tied up to the harbour wall for a couple of nights. We were woken in the middle of the night by this noise we had been hearing for an hour or more ,Donk, donk, donk. Finally a big wooden fishing boat show up and tried to moor along side so we had to move to avoid getting crushed . They had a one cylinder semi-diesel engine , they did not turn it off ! Left it running for that night , Saturday and thru Sunday then off early Monday for another week fishing! They just came back for Sunday mass and to unload them off for another week! I hear there is now an expensive resort on the island and no anchoring . A different era .( and I’m only 61!) You berthed Skua in Cartagena on the pontoon where our yacht Kalypso is located. I didn’t’ see her as you were looking right and we were left! Enjoy the Caribbean!
Cartagena is such a great city! I bought my Hans Christian 33 there and shipped her across to the US. Just to the right of your engine start key, there is a recessed plastic circle of some sort. What is that?
Looks like you guys made the BBC news. After your Atlantic crossing arriving in St Vincent with no knowledge of the worldwide Covid lockdown. We obviously have a bit of catching up to do as you have clearly left Spain long ago. Look forward to your upcoming crossing videos and stay safe in the Caribbean.
Oh you guys... I so miss sailing the Med these days! Still about a month of lockdown in Austria before heading back to Greece. Hope you guys stay safe!!!
Fresh water, especially warm/hot fresh water will generally release things 'frozen' by salt water (your gas knob). A little lubrication once freed will keep it moving.

Seems like an age away from seeing you in Cartagena! You did well to push on and get to the Caribbean I think. We got our work done over winter and started out heading East a week before lockdown. Only got as far as the Mar Menor and are now trapped in here by the bridge which isn't manned. It's okay though as it's a good safe anchorage and Spainish lockdown is very strict so theres no pleasure sailing allowed. Hope you've found a good place to sit it out and you have some freedom to get on shore.
Thanks guys. Yes, it was a different world back then! To be fair, we’re in the only open and not locked down country we know of...! We got super lucky! The other islands don’t even allow people to swim off their boats (and it’s HOT!). Stay safe 😊
Guys you’ve made the BBC web news. So pleased you’re safe in Saint Vincent for now. As I’m sure you know by now, it looks like lockdown will last well into June this side of the pond. The latest speculation on holiday travel is we could be unable to leave the UK for possibly up to a year. It’s a bummer as our June rally Brittany is cancelled and it looks like my 70’s classic trip to Switzerland in August is off too. Stay safe and I wish you fair winds.
We've also been interviewed on radio 5 live should be on soon :) yes, it's difficult to predict here in Bequia as people don't have the means to stockpile easily and so a lockdown would be really hard on the country. Other than travelling by boat I can't imagine holidays being possible for a long time - getting in a plane would be a scary prospect in the post corona world.
Hey guys I here your now in the Caribbean wow🥳 this video is the most recent upload for me. Am I missing newer videos of more recent things or are your uploads a month or so behind time?
Hi Alex, this video is from October 2019. We’re a few months behind with videos, but they’ll catch up to the Atlantic crossing soon because we were in the yard for 3 months this winter and only filmed 4 videos out of that 😊👍
Now That was a great example of how you two kids handle Skua as a well oiled machine, sharing the duties and shifts during the passage! You spoke of how cold it was getting, brings up a question. Is there any sort of heating device down below?

@@SailingKittiwake just heard it, for anyone looking for specific times, about 1:41 to 1:50 for the full segment. Glad to hear you're both well, though if this continues looks like you might be setting down some temporary roots until the end of hurricane season!
@@SailingKittiwake Just listened to it. On the day you claimed to have set off, the emergency powers act had been passed for 7 days, and UK lockdown was imposed the day preceding your departure. In Italy, over 9,000 people had died, the country had been in lock-down for almost 2 weeks. The army had been tasked with policing and medical assistance roles for over a week. It didn't escape my notice that you mentioned the name of your youtube channel on the radio. You claimed that on departure the virus was "dying down", and confined to China, there's no point at which both of those things occurred; China reported falling cases AFTER Italy had suffered massive casualties. Next time you're planning a marketing stunt, get your diary in order, and make sure the story actually makes sense.
We set off on 28th February. The UK went into lockdown on 23RD MARCH. The figures you're reporting are from March, not February, when we set off. Just look at this graph and tell me HOW you think there were 9,000 deaths in Italy when we set off, on 28th February: www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/italy/. The UK cases start even later: www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/uk/. And in China, in last days of February, the graph goes flat, just as the news reported when we set off: www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/china/. We put on NO STUNT. We had ZERO control over the media twisting the news and spreading it all over the world. We do have proof of our crossing, though, and of the REAL facts reported on The Guardian. This is our GPS track, can't make it up! share.garmin.com/skua. (select "view all tracks" on the top right). Wake up. The media sensationalised our story, not us!
Oh and as proof there's also the posts we published on TH-cam and Facebook and Instagram telling we were setting off on 28th February. And guess what? No one told us in the comments: "Don't go!" Because there were no borders closed, no lockdowns, no world pandemic. Do you seriously think the BBC wouldn't have checked the dates we mentioned??
Hey guys another great video, have you ever considered longer watches say 6 hours. As a shiftworker the last 40 years I find that short sleeps do not help and fatigue studies show that minimum rest periods of 5 hours should be observed if fatigue is to be avoided, it would seem to me that barring incident requiring all hands 8 hour shifts would see you each getting a meaningful sleep say 7-1 and 1-7 with the obvious ability to fluff if neccesary
We've thought about it, but the problem at sea is sometimes you have a shift where you can't sleep - squalls, issues that need two people, so we find it best to hedge our bets and have more shorter sleeps.
We are yachties as well but boat sold 3 years ago but we hope a new one in the future. What camera do you use? Love your vids. How do you find your hydrovane?
Cheers. It’s just a Canon EOS M50 - the cheapest we could find. We’d love to upgrade but the salt just destroys cameras so it’s not worth it. We love the Hydrovane - very easy to use!
Well you lot ,, just finished reading your story in my morning news paper here in New Zealand, i was wondering how you both was getting on ,, keep safe ,, plus I enjoy all the maintenance and I have had experience with nearly all of it , sometimes I laugh and sometimes I feel shit sorry for you ha ha but that’s boating big highs and sometimes bigger lows , and we fuckin love it ,, thats the real virus 🦠

What sort of cost is it to stay in the marinas at places like Denier and Cartagena? I live near Puerto Banus (Marbella) where all the millionaire's yachts go. I am sure the prices there are astronomical!
Hi guys, missed the BBC report as I don't watch fiction programs. You missed nothing by being out and free. If you get the chance, get going again. This world has gone crazy, nobody asks questions any more. Waiting for the first opportunity to get off of this rock. Fair winds.
Hi Guys, hope all is well in the Grenadines. I saw that you changed your batteries during the re-fit. I only saw you install two pairs of six volt, effectively just two 12 volt batteries but if you have or plan to add more in the future and you find yourselves with some spare time have a read of this piece on interconnecting batteries; www.smartgauge.co.uk/batt_con.html Until I stumbled across this I had no idea how critical the method is for charging and discharging multiple batteries. Really enjoying your well presented videos and have nothing but admiration for your determination and hard, methodical work. Brilliant achievement.

What was that town that you docked into? I couldn't tell from watching the video.
Cartagena, Spain.
Magic :)
nice BGM ~
Saw your story of how you were surprised by the Coronavirus on the BBC website.
@@SailingKittiwake Thanks for that info and for your reply, I think you enjoyed the lockdown more than most!!
You are featured on the front page of the BBC online news site!
Again? Oh dear.
Thanks so much John! We didn’t realise the story had reached your side of the world. Not sure how accurate it was, but if you wanted a real account, this is it: www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/22/couple-at-sea-for-a-month-reveal-shock-at-scale-of-coronavirus-pandemic
Sailing Kittiwake, I knew your story , and us kiwis here love what you are doing , fuck the rest just enjoy it
Just been reading your dilemma on the BBC news . Stay safe
What sort of cost is it to stay in the marinas at places like Denier and Cartagena? I live near Puerto Banus (Marbella) where all the millionaire's yachts go. I am sure the prices there are astronomical!
Cartagena was €26 x night for us (37ft). Denia was €21 x night. This was in October. As you can tell, we’re no millionaires 😂
I can’t understand how the water temp of the med can change so drastically from august to September
This is October. It changes end of September quickly.
0:50 I thought Chopin was French?
Google it? 😁
Could you tell me about the music please.
Hi guys, missed the BBC report as I don't watch fiction programs. You missed nothing by being out and free. If you get the chance, get going again. This world has gone crazy, nobody asks questions any more. Waiting for the first opportunity to get off of this rock. Fair winds.
were are you now then if this was in 2019 ?

@@SailingKittiwake ho ok got it👍👊
fun with Alan sorry I was totally overwhelmed by the amount of emails and messages yesterday. Hope you didn’t find it rude x
What you call “toasties” we call “grilled cheese sandwich”
Hi Guys, hope all is well in the Grenadines. I saw that you changed your batteries during the re-fit. I only saw you install two pairs of six volt, effectively just two 12 volt batteries but if you have or plan to add more in the future and you find yourselves with some spare time have a read of this piece on interconnecting batteries; www.smartgauge.co.uk/batt_con.html
Until I stumbled across this I had no idea how critical the method is for charging and discharging multiple batteries.
Really enjoying your well presented videos and have nothing but admiration for your determination and hard, methodical work. Brilliant achievement.
Thanks so much Anthony! Checking the website out now!
Ryan is on his own if he wants to wear a bikini in that weather.
Haha! YES! :D
I want a Tatyana because they are the ultimate small cruiser for blue water...but she sails like a pig
Ciao Be safe!
Yo yo thank you hope all is well and you are keeping busy and safe...( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°)
Thanks Zeb! We're good, keeping safe and busy as always :) We hope you're well and you and your family are OK.
Elena, you don't need a bikini to be cute :)
Hell no she is GORGEOUS!!! And can sail a damn boat!!! I'm in awe and inspired
Ice uce ise
Haha! You have ice on your sailboat?
Nice video lol
skúa
Why did you pull that coronavirus stunt? It's obviously complete nonsense to claim that you didn't know about it, so why are you?
We have been miss quoted obviously...
Ryan had a chance to tell the truth on the BBC Radio, thankfully.
