    Great review, very focussed on the important details, no fluff! Any idea why they’ve chosen front wheel drive though? I thought most manufacturers, including Kia had seen the light with improved Ev design allowing more cabin space between wheels but also better handling RWD with motors in the rear as in the Ev6. Also any idea of towing capacity?

      wonder if that is C2C? and what the pack level density looks like.

    • @starfirenuclear
      @starfirenuclear 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      LFP batteries are not efficient. Because it has lower energy density therefore requires more cells to match up total capacity. So 88kw LFP battery car gets heavier than 88kw NCM battery car. Currenlty LFP are used for cost down. Outside china, EV5 will get NCM batteries.

    • @starfirenuclear
      @starfirenuclear 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      well, only korean manufactured model gets NCM.

    So this is around the size of the Seltos or Sportage? I drive a Seltos now so this might be the one for me.

  • @starfirenuclear
    @starfirenuclear 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    there are some misinformed about batteries. LFP is requies to charge 100% often. This is because to recalibrate battery and prevent memory effect. On the other hand, NCM is not that prone to memory effect so you can charge how much ever you want. And with NCM, you can charge 100% if you want. The thing that people misunderstand about 80% in NCM is that from 20% to 80% of charge area, it can perform fast charging. And below than 20% and above 80% of charge, charging speed go down. Just that's it. It doesn't mean it gets dangerous.

    • @starfirenuclear
      @starfirenuclear 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      And another reason why LFP model seems to have longer range is becasue LFP is not capable to deal such high C-rate. LFP is very prone to catch fire in high C-rate. This is why output setting must be set lower than NCM battery cars. If output setting for NCM battery cars are set to be like those LFP cars, NCM cars range would get much longer than those LFP cars.

    I'll tell you, one of the things I hate about these early production models at these press events is when they don't let journalist get in them. I kinda understand it but we really want a birds eye view of it all. We want to see door open, trunks open, hood up and more. This is why I usually come back after journalist have had the press car to take for a spin.

    The EV5 is a possible vehicle to replace our aging 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. We need an EV that can accommodate a mobility scooter lift (inside, not trailer hitch). I personally installed a Harmar lift inside the Mitsubishi, even though both Mitsubishi and Harmar said it was not possible. For the EV5, a lot depends on detailed internal dimensions and the possibility of mounting the lift. The front wheel drive standard EV5 may make it easier to install a lift in the back.
    The Tesla Model Y is a better car, but its sloping roof eliminates it as an option for disabled people who need an electric scooter lift. And of course the EV5 would need to become available in Canada.

    There are so many misleading info. LFP battery is hard to measure SOC by voltage. In order to integrate the current to measure the battery, 100% charge is required to reset the error accumulated. NMC battery can charge 100% especially for the battery in EV5. Tesla has been provide some wrong information to the customer caused by the feature of their battery. Huyndai and Kia never guided to the customer to minimize the full charge. The charging speed is decreasing at high SOC. But this is common for NMC and LFP battery.

    So, do we take that at 9:04, the left side is a KIA EV3. As much as I am waiting on the EV5 to replace some RAV4 sizes fleet vehicles. The EV3 would be sitting in a comfortable size to run a smaller sized EV vehicle to replace the main stays of our fleet. As we already have 12 EVs so far, they are of a more expensive mind set for a start up of EVs but to try and continue at that level is the bid issue. BTW. I am not that fazed or am actually happy with the lower power. I have been asking for that since the first EVs launched. Speed is one thing, but in my line, pace is best.

    FWD nah! I wonder if they will end up doing like Polestar did with the 2 and changing it to rear wheel drive as standard or AWD. No need for a FWD EV the battery weight places center of gravity dead center. There are benefits to FWD in ICE vehicles because the weight of the engine over the front axles can increase traction, but on an EV it is not necessary since all the weight is between the axles.

    - BYD Atto 3 is FWD, 150kW, 60kWh LFP pack, 4455mm long
    - BYD Seal U is FWD, 167kW, 82.5kWh LFP pack, 4785mm long

      You’re right. Lots of commenters (and the presenter) potentially missing the point I suspect. Kia makes no bones about the fact it’s aiming for volume / market share with this car - and it won’t do that by competing with Tesla. It’ll do that competing with the likes of BYD, and even with Toyota, which currently has a 12 month+ waiting list for its very dated but still wildly popular RAV4 (and Corolla Cross) here in Australia.
      Specs, fit, finish and market strategy all suggest maybe that’s what this car is about. Not holding my breath, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this was closer in price to BYD than Tesla.

      I talked about Tesla because they have 65% of the EV market in Australia. If a mainstream manufacturer like Kia isn't working to be competitive with Tesla, they are missing the point. As for the Kona, the EV5 is quite a bit larger (4615mm v 4350mm)

      For one thing: 120kW peak charging versus only 80kW (or is it 100kW?) for the new Kona. I like the looks of the Kona better though.

      @@chasingcars OK, thanks, I understand that Tesla have the lion share of the EV market here, what I meant is the vehicle shape and for that matter price. The KONA is a smallish EV, whereas the Tesla Y [hatchback] is in a different price band I believe.

    My personal vehicle is a Kia, my professional lease a Model Y, and as much as I like Kia (I wanted an EV6 for professional lease car but passed on it because I'm 6" 2') I can guarantee you none of these cars "targeting the Model Y" by trying to compete in price come even close in terms of practicality if you are over 6" nothing or have to install child seats. Those things eat into space, even in compact SUVs with supposed "ample legroom". The Model Y is a van inside compared to the likes of the XC30, iX1, and probably the EV5 as well. The fact is the Model Y succeeds in competing with these much smaller cars in price, but is a segment up in terms of space and specs for the price. No non-Chinese manufacturer seems able to beat Tesla in both these field at the same time, for the time being.
    If you're shopping on a budget, you know you're gonna make sacrifices such as interior room. But if you're shopping around in these prices of this EV segment and you have use for the interior space, and you know you can get it, I can't imagine you're gonna settle for a much more compact option on account of more classic styling or brand loyalty.

    Sorry, but you range estimates are far too optimistic. Your figures are better than actual figures for Telsas. The EV5 has the Cd of an breeze block, so 13.2kWh/100Km is unreasonable. 16.2 kWhr is more probable, so 520Km, ie usual figures of approx 500Km on 80kWhr. A max charge rate of 120kW (ish) is far too slow and the sneaky bastards give a charge time for a 30/80 charge. It's an LFP, it wants to be used 100/0 and charged 0/100, so give the times for such, or have they got something to hide? Going to be 60 mins for a full charge. Finally, 60K is still too expensive for a 500km car and a 1 hour (ish) refueling time.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I’m letting you know what I think the WLTP estimates will be. These should be achievable urban, and Highway as usual you have to subtract 10-20 percent.

  • @_shreyash_anand

    Interesting looking. However, from our Indian perspective, it needs to be at least 35% cheaper than the EV6 as the Ioniq 5 is assembled here, and so costs 25% less than an equivalent EV6. And the Ioniq 5 is much bigger than this
