We studied the passage in Luke chapter 15 this past Sunday in our Sunday School Conference call.
My father was an alcoholic and I can say until I was shocked who he really was until he had to stop drinking when he got diagnosed with diabetes...I learned why my mom loved him. He was a truly wonderful man!!! My grandmother had 15 children and only four made it past twenty two!!! I am amazed!!! My dad was the baby...an alcoholic of which made it very much difficult for his children...I had to be the one who protected my my two baby brothers...I have never gotten over that! I really don't know how to deal with this.... suggestions???
My brother in law was an alcoholic too for many years. My nieces are in pain and so they with their Dad went for a BIBLICAL COUNSELING under a Counselor Pastor . It helped a lot on FORGIVENESS and HEALING of traumatiic experience. You have to make a DECISION one time to forgive, its not easy but you have to do for your sake, of course the Pain will still lingers for months or a year or too but it will slowly deminish. And you may read the BOOK of ROMANS in the BIBLE too..GOD BLESS YOU.
Get right with Jesus! I was a mess also, raised in church, at 47 yrs old, GOD got my attention!! Found a Bible teaching church, became good friends with preacher's wife/pianist. God allows me to sing again...for Him!! Brother, God knows what you have been through. Talk to Him! He will give you peace with the past, the capacity to forgive your father, & freedom from

I remember the Gatlin Brothers coming to my church ( Kilgore Missionary Baptist Church ) and singing some of their best songs ( I really wish I could see them again every now and then ).

The song says the man was the oldest son of a wealthy man. This is when you realize the writer didn't listen very well when he heard the story. If you read the parable in Luke 15, starting at verse 11, you will see that the story is about the YOUNGER son. Other than that, this is a very invigorating, inspirational song.
True ! ... but maybe he was referring to himself as the oldest son ... in any case ... love the song !
I agree. He said it was a true story Then you see the camera focus on his parents.
The song is written about Larry himself. Larry is the oldest child in his family. He moved far from God, and God in his mercy drew him back again.

This is true, and as Southern Baptists they would definitely know this. They may have used a little creative liberty since Firstborn fits the rhythm better than Second-born. jmo
Edit: Plus, Larry Gatlin is the oldest brother. During the second verse he switches to "I", and when he says "firstborn of a hard workin' man" he points to his father in the crowd.
