  • There are so many warm-up movements out there, but these are 20 of my favorite. If you pick 5-8 you will be warmed up in no time, or do a bunch for conditioning! Have fun training!

First session yesterday. Warmup consisted of shrimping, which kind of went okay, but then reverse and side-shrimping.
Never felt more like a fish out of water. So I had to find this video. Most important takeaway: someone with a brown belt acknowledged that those last two drills are the hard ones. :)

Good question!!! Anything that increases your body’s temperature for AT LEAST 3-5 minutes is good. You can do a general warm-up like running, squats, jumping jacks, or you could do a more sports specific warmup like the video. A mix of movements is good for skill improvement, and it makes it more fun.

It’s something to work up to. Make sure you can do a forward roll without any problems first. Then practice sitting on your butt and rolling back, without going all the way over. The key to the roll is to tuck your head to one side (ear to shoulder), and everyone naturally has a side they prefer. Ask someone to spot you until you can do one. Have fun!

The best way to get into BJJ shape is to do it my friend. I have a degree in Exercise Science, and of course regular exercise will help, but there’s no time like the present to get started for real. A good academy will be gentle and understanding with a new person. These drills are great for building conditioning, but some are best on mats, Hope that helps.

I started when I was 38. Now I am 43 and feel good. I know some older guys at my current gym here in Japan. The oldest is 70. There is one guy who is over 60 and a purple belt and the dude is pretty strong and agile. A guy who is like 58 a purple belt and pretty strong. And there are quite a few guys in their 40's.
My sensei is 46 and often spars 2 times a day (morning and evening class).
My advice is start light and take it easy. You are going to lose a lot in the beginning - which is like a couple of years and then some. Do some cross training and other exercises.
Currently I do jiu-jitsu 6 days a week, a couple days of judo, some yoga everyday and a few days a week of body weight exercises.

At age 59 I recently reached Master in Kung Fu San Soo, but I switched schools to one that incorporates KFSS, Krave Maga and BJJ because I wanted a greater challenge. It's kicking my butt, compared with the guys in their 20s, but I love it and I'm learning a great deal. It really is a chess match and I intend to keep going as long as I can.
This video is a terrific resource for me and I've saved it to file for continued reference.

How are you a brown belt and doing your hip slides wrong? You are scooting your butt out with the wrong leg. The leg on bottom should draw up flat on the mat in order to get your knee in and recover guard. The leg on top should Plant the foot and push your hip out or do the "shrimp" motion. Shrimping is a Judo term not bjj. Other than that this is a great video
