Wow! Well done. As for rain and snow in the air for a diorama? I took thin sheets of plexiglass to make four clear walls. On one side that would be the inside. I took masking tape to mask a protected area at a slight angle. Next I used very fine sandpaper to scratch lines lightly into the plexiglass the same angle as the tape. I tried to keep the scratches as straight as I could. I matched the angle all the way around in a way that when looking through the plexiglass that the rain was moving in the same direction. I then removed the tape and repeated what I did before. This gave me different densities when you looked through the plexiglass. I wish I could show you how it came out. But it was some time ago and I am no longer in touch with my client. If I were to maybe improve on it the next time? Maybe try this technique on both sides of the plexiglass to see if it is raining harder. Oh and on down spouts, and off of roofs? I used clear packing tape dipped in clear silicon rubber to show water rushing out of them. or off of them. Good job. Love your work. You help make me be a better modeler.
I grew up in a small American town that looked exactly like this diorama (Arkansas City, Kansas, if you're curious). I immediately got a little homesick looking at it because the downtown area looks just like this diorama to this day. You nailed the look of classic 50's Americana buildings, and your rain effects were extremely convincing!

Those gloss effects look amazing 👏. It photographed well. A little digital enhancement on a great base isn't cheating, movies and TV do it all the time.

Brilliant! I don't have the patience to do this sort of thing, my son does 'war' dioramas with battalions of tanks and people etc. The patience and artistry that goes into making such things is astonishing.

Thanks for this, I’ve always wondered about modelling rain as I have an unfinished layout set in the Midlands and wanted to model it in a more realistically dark and dreary setting with wet and damp features but until now hadn’t really thought it would be doable, so thanks for inspiring me to give it a go

Outstanding job Kathy and nice hairdo too!!! One of my favorite's is the awning appearing to be blowing in the wind!!! Awesome. Lots of good model supplies out there these days...... including one I like to use and not sure if you know of it..... Testors makes a nice applicator bottle of 'clear parts cement' and window maker. I've used this product to attach headlights in plastic models as well as windshields. It dries clear and has all the potent qualities of it's regular plastic cement. Now I'm restoring Lionel trains from the '50's and using it to install windows! Thanks again for a great project!!!!!!
actually the photoshot rains good idea also for stop motion animation since 1 will be taking still TY kathy for that idea was thinking how can one create Rain in stop motion.

I think you achieved the effect you were trying for. What really helps is the man with the umbrella that gives the impression of stormy weather. I watched this to learn the rain effects but I was impressed with how much more I learned about then just making rain like assembling a Hydrocal building, making a tar paper roof and a great deal more. This was just an all round excellent tutorial. Thank you for making and sharing this.
We had an elderly relative with a lamp that ran oil down wires. It was fascinating to watch. It could definitely work but perhaps in a larger scale than HO.
@@KathyMillatt I still have one of those "rain drop (oil) lamps, my late Mum bought it in the early 1980's has a statue of a female in the middle with green shrubs and white flowers, looks so nice when working, it made me think of the same suggestion but then I saw (Protomaker Black Sprint Original 3D Printer( had already bet me to it, great minds and all that), loved watching this, you did a really nice job of it, this is why I love TH-cam, as people like you upload such interesting things to watch.that you can find by chance and really enjoy.
She has a really kind, friendly sounding voice. I don't know why but she seems like she's be nice to be around, like she'd be a good teacher or nurse 🤷♀️ This looks so cool as well! If I had the money or space (or talent) to do something like this I totally would. Well done 🙂
Hi. I modelled as a child but got back into it 20 years ago. I joined a model railroad club which helped with practical issues but it was mostly books, magazines and forums back then.
I love this, especially the night scenes they're kind of eerie :D ... I was expecting you to show us how you suspend water in air to create the raindrops :D, Thank you for the video, it's awesome!

Kathy, for a rain effect in dioramas my simple method has been to frame the project in thin clear plastic walls. Then any combination of using small drops of glue or even mildly scarring the inside surface works great. My technique was to make sure I did it all in the same direction for realism. This method also works really well for snow. If there's enough room on the project for multiple walls, adding them will enhance the visual appeal. This was a lesson learned from a Fargo diorama I did. (From the film Fargo.) It looks like this project turned out really well. Thanks for the post.

great job! very realistic! as a lifelong train/diorama builder myself you still came up with some interesting techniques I have never seen before! also thank you for the narration. too many youtubers seem to be afraid of their own voice! constantly trying to guess what theyre doing. its good to see when you hit some snags how you figured out a way around it! you know not everything always goes as planned! just subbed to your channel too! glad I found it! gonna dig in and see what else you got! keep up the great work!

Very true. I often look in puddles to see if it’s raining as fine rain is rarely visible when you look out a window. The puddles and umbrella tell the story here.

You could try building a clear box around the scene and add a fog maker to get a just rained effect.
I do have a fog maker. I might blow some in for future photos just to get some atmosphere.

It may not be the first time I’ve fixed a cracked building.... learning to hide mistakes is definitely a necessary modelling skill.

Gloss varnish works well for a start but I personally love the variety of a drying Road with some dry patches but wet puddles still.

Excellent video. Even a scene representing the point in time just after a rain would be really cool. You've inspired me to try it on my soon to be built new layout. The pavement is also very well done. Your potholes look amazingly like Michigan.
