    Ray, when you unplug the fuel pressure regulator, you change the fuel pressure, which WILL change the fuel trims. This is not confirmation of a vacuum leak.

      Long terms are a trend to help compensate for aging and or wear. Say ypu have a small vac leak that's been there for a while, y o ur long terms will be positive (adding) around 10 or so for example. Shorts will waver back and forth around 0 up and down.
      Remember with long term at 10 pos. , it's added to the baseline, so zero os actually plus 10 over what's expected.
      This helps in starting etc since long term sets the baseline bit if you hit 30 or 25 on long terms they peg and trip the mil.
      On an older car if your long terms are 10 or less either way is generally considered good.
      Computer can actually adjust a lot. I took off my oil cap and was at plus 45.

  • @EristiCat
    @EristiCat ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Seems like it would be easier and more definitive to test the pressure regulator by using a vacuum tester to put a vacuum on it and seeing if it holds vacuum. Connecting and disconnecting the vac line from it changes the fuel pressure in the rail so it’s not surprising the fuel trims change too.

  • @imfloridano5448
    @imfloridano5448 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Well done Ray. Really digging into the vacuum system to locate the leak is really educational and super helpful. Any who has a scan tool also will get a better understanding of the short and long term trims. Also connecting the vacuum leak to the changes in these trims makes it easier to locate. If my knowledge of Fords is correct, which may not be, the automatic transmissions rely on the MAF sensor to tell the computer how much air is being drawn into the engine, so if there's a vacuum leak after the sensor it can actually cause transmission problems if it's bad enough.

    Excellent video. Thank You! I am having this issue with my wife's Land Rover. I have never taken it to the dealer, I'm afraid to and I don't have decent shop around me. Sad part is, there was a great independent shop down the road from me. The manager retired and the folks he worked with disappeared. All new folks came in and they are dishonest. The techniques Ray showed us here will help me track this down. I have been watching his videos for a couple years now, they have made me a much better mechanic. Heck, I'm not a mechanic.

  • @banneddamn
    @banneddamn ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The CEL is the service engine soon light, its working fine!
    Its not a pressure regulator as there is no return line, its a pressure sensor to tell the ecu to vary voltage to the pump to keep consistent pressure. Of course taking away its vacuum will change it.
    That hole in the intake tube was a vacuum leak. Its where the iat sensor goes on 96-00, in 01-04 the iat is built into the maf, but most aftermarket cold air pipes have the hole there to cover use for all years.
    Fuel leaking out the tank is most likely the rubber from the tank to filler neck.

    Honestly, there is a far easier way to check for vacuum leaks. I do it all of the time when checking carbs and crankcases. I use a Craftsman hand-held vacuum pump. You're plugging this and that off, while running back and forth to your scan tool. In 5 minutes you could have checked everything for a vacuum leak. him going back and forth to the scan tool was him trying to isolate where exactly the leak was.

      @animefreak5757 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-dc2kg2hm8c any brake vaccum bleed kit pump would do the trick. If you want to go full redneck you can use a propane torch (not lit) or flamable spray and put it where you suspect the leak. If you have a leak in the area it will suck up fuel as well as air and the engine sound will change.

      I have two for my 1991 Explorer (purchased new). A bit crude, but it works. One is basic to count led blinks and one (newer) is programmed to count them for you.

    Hey Ray. I love your persistence in finding problems and your patience in dealing with them, not to mention your wacky humor. I want to add something though. Unhooking the pressure sensor causes the sensor to reference atmospheric pressure instead of manifold pressure, which causes about an 8 psi fuel pressure increase. That could mask some other lean condition. Just a guess, but it's possible that the aftermarket cold air pipe doesn't match up with the mass air sensor properly, so the air reading is skewed, at least at idle. I've had this problem on Mustang cold air systems that aren't properly matched up. Increasing the fuel pressure might be compensating your fuel trims and leading you astray. Also, it might be missing the intake air temp sensor (where you plugged the pipe) or the sensor might be located wrong, which might be adding another variable. Thanks again for all that you do!

    That was the best fuel trim disgnosis I've seen in a while, better than any chalk board explanation. I love the fact that you foloowed a logicat trail and explained the process of elimination to narrow down the actial problem. I don't think I would have considered checking the fuel rail pressure sensor as a cause of rich trims. I have seen lean conditions from weak fuel pumps, but this was a first for me. That's when decades in the trenches comes to bear. Congrats on the diagnosis.

      @@michaelpressman7203 the sad part is, up here in the rust belt, the book quotes are severely inaccurate. A job that books at 4 hrs takes at least 6 because of the rust and corrosion from the salt brine in winter.

    You can also do some static testing of vacuum operated devices that use a simple diaphragm. Just connect your hand operated vacuum pump to the device, evacuate appropriately, then give it a few minutes and watch the vacuum gauge to see if it loses vacuum too fast.

    I'd say the rad is probably OK. They probably changed the hose (spilled) thermostat (spilled) and the coolant bottle is probably from overheating/boiling/filling

    The reason you can use a UV is because they use small amounts of PAG oil to lubricate the compressor, but when they do a decay test it pulls out EVERYTHING, so you inject PAG oil and it already has an ultraviolet dye inside the oil so you can use a tool to diagnose a leak

    I would say the trims are not off that much and watching them at idle and not while driving isn’t a great way to look at them. The pressure reading and unplugging the connector naturally when the computer see 90psi of fuel pressure it will start pulling fuel trims lower. The gps of the MAF was around 6 or more most times I could catch it. That’s to high at idle and will be adding fuel to engine also. Hot rod owner probably has a oil soaked K&N filter and has got the MAF wire coated. Between that and the change of the intake design probably has fuel trims whacked

    Back years ago I had this Newer Chevy Express work van come to my shop. Van had an evap leak amd had the purge solenoid changed 3 times by different shops before I got it. After smoke testing I was pointed to a leaking purge valve again. But rather than replacing it I realized that someone installed it backwards causing a leak and the two following techs installed 2 new valves backward as well. The connector wire was so tight I'm surprised it didn't break.

    • @russellcrawford4809
      @russellcrawford4809 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would think that extra port could be for air temp sensor that this particular vehicle may not use. Maybe ???

    • @animefreak5757
      @animefreak5757 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's possible that there wasn't a vacuum leak at all, and the regulator is faulty and providing more or less fuel pressure than indicated.

  • @leepivonka7650
    @leepivonka7650 ปีที่แล้ว

    I assume the fuel pressure regulator keeps a constant pressure across the fuel injectors (fuel rail to intake manifold). It seems like unplugging the manifold vacuum reference (so it gets atmospheric pressure) will increase the fuel rail pressure - the scan tool shows this. The intake manifold pressure will stay about the same, so the pressure across the fuel injectors will increase & they'll flow more & inject more fuel. The ECU fuel trims will then go down to compensate for the extra fuel flow.
    Thank you for doing these videos!
