That is a miracle the way that engine runs with all the miles. You took a hell of a risk flushing that trans with 400k miles. I would have just changed the filter and the fluid that came out of the pan, and put the conditioner in it. The conditioner kind of revitalizes the old fluid. I am astonished that it worked as well as it did. Great job! Thank goodness. If that thing is maintained properly, it might make a million miles. It is obviously a good one. GOOD MORNING RAY AND THE WIFE UNIT! Along with TROY, the new mechanic. And don’t forget about the new office employee, who’s name has slipped my mind at this point. Roger in Pierre South Dakota
I have a 2006 GMC 2500hd 4x4 single cab fleet truck with 6.0 vortex that I bought brand new. Now it has 195k on the odometer still runs strong I change the oil every three months or 3000 miles ( been doing this since new) changed coolant, transmission transfer case front and rear end many times also flushed the brake fluid a couple of times. I have the posi rear end and it takes expensive gear oil. Seeing the seal leak that much gear oil makes my wallet hurt. They are good trucks if taken care of.
I was wondering about the filter, after seeing how black the old fluid was… On balance, I probably would have turned that one down. Intergalactic mileage and clear evidence of recent shoddy maintenance are not a good mix. I have experience of “you were last to touch it. It was fine up to then!” I’m sure there’s a transmission specialist nearby, or a more desperate outfit, that he could have suggested they bring it to.
I've flushed 2 trans with fluid that nasty (200k in factory fluid) and they were fine until I sold the car. I found my dad had never changed the OE fluid in his car at 180k and I flushed it (unserviceable filter). No problems. I don't believe the "don't flush it" thing... If it fails, it already had problems.
My wife parks all side ways on Purpose so people think she dose not know how to drive and will park away from her I told her that is not how that works but she believes it so ok
I've never had a complete fluid exchange kill a transmission. I believe the myth comes from people trying to save an already failed transmission by replacing the fluid. New fluid will not restore a burned clutch pack, nor will it turn back a blown sprag clutch. Any time I installed a used transmission, I always replaced all the fluid--and the filter. Pan gasket and external seals to boot. Easy when the trans is on the bench.
Bought a used truck from car dealership took to transmission shop had trans fluid changed it started acting up had to get a new transmission after that not sure what happened
Everyone always says not to touch a highmilage trans, but I changed the fluid and filter in my 1500 when I bought it at 250k without knowing the history, got another 100k out of it before it lost 3rd and 4th. The MAF code would concern me, I hear that can kill transmissions because the PCM uses it to control line pressure
Thank you Mr RainmanRay not only did I enjoy this video so much I did watch it twice double the enjoyment viewing . Btw the more you demonstrate the fluid machine’s operation the better I can appreciate it’s performance and real world application and functionality, cool factor to boot . Thanks

My brake clean stock is up 200% !!!
GOOD MORNING RAY AND THE WIFE UNIT! Along with TROY, the new mechanic. And don’t forget about the new office employee, who’s name has slipped my mind at this point. Roger in Pierre South Dakota
Her name is Amaya.
I would not flush a high mileage Transmission. I would only Drain and Refill the Pan and change out the filter.
Reeeee. Do both. Remove and clean pan, change filter then BeeGee
I totally agree 👍
I was wondering about the filter, after seeing how black the old fluid was… On balance, I probably would have turned that one down. Intergalactic mileage and clear evidence of recent shoddy maintenance are not a good mix.
I have experience of “you were last to touch it. It was fine up to then!” I’m sure there’s a transmission specialist nearby, or a more desperate outfit, that he could have suggested they bring it to.
This should NEVER BE DONE without FILTER, Every mechanic knows this, filter inspection and change, fluid exchange with old filter accomplishes nothing
Ray, you do know that the Volvos don't drive themselves yet. A driver is still needed. You so funny.
Lean on both banks plus a mass air code= intake gasket time.
and put some caps on the AC ports!
Vortecs have terrible intakes. I have replaced a couple. Fellpro makes a upgraded gasket that works great.
It should be sponsored by super clean as much bright clean as she is you and Eric oak go through the end of the week
My wife parks all side ways on Purpose so people think she dose not know how to drive and will park away from her I told her that is not how that works but she believes it so ok
It’s the full moon! Makes the crazy come to the top!
Your pin is called a key & it fits into a keyway.
Ray, you need to get yourself some of those clip on spray paint pistol grips for your brake cleaner cans.
Don't forget holsters and extra 10mm sockets in the bullet loops. Would love to see him twirl them brake clean "guns" like Buster Scruggs.😂
Absolute 💯 seamless video from beginning to end.
Excellent job Ray. And you didn't break off any studs. 😃
Thank you Mr RainmanRay not only did I enjoy this video so much I did watch it twice double the enjoyment viewing .
Btw the more you demonstrate the fluid machine’s operation the better I can appreciate it’s performance and real world application and functionality, cool factor to boot .
Thanks
Ray ray ray!!! I’m shaking my head as i watch you putting the (oily) wheel back on the truck @23.48. And thinking nooooooo don’t do it!!! Lol.
Good work Ray, love your videos !
That was a great repair Ray. I understand your trepidation servicing thet transmission but don't blame you given the color of the fluid. I've never seen it that black before. Glad it worked out ok. Cheers!
Hey Ray, out of all your years in automotive, who or what was your best teacher, time/experience, or a single person do you credit for your expertise?
My town & country 1997 has 477890 miles before scrap, engine was ok, trans ok, both orginal, but rust eated body.
Good service, with good oils 👍
Good stuff as always…I always wonder what the over/under is for how many times you say “it’s not ok” lol
Good old chevys Ray I cant beleive its got 400 thou on it
