Fly Fishing Brook Trout in the Margaree River | Cape Breton Nova Scotia

  • I took my family for a road trip to Canada's East Coast. In this video I finally try my dream of fly fishing for brook trout in the Margaree River in Cape Breton Nova Scotia! I missed the Atlantic Salmon Run by a couple of weeks but good thing there are always trout in these rivers.
We’re staying at the Big Intervale Fishing Lodge, a quiet tucked away fishing getaway which borders the Margaree River. Our gracious hosts were Herman & Ruth who are also avid fly fishers themselves as evidently shown on the photos of them and past guests all over the walls of the main lodge. The main lodge itself offers a restaurant & bar with delicious swiss inspired food using local ingredients & garden fresh herbs and vegetables. I highly recommend Herman’s seafood chowder and of course, their salmon dish!
If you ever plan to visit Cape Breton and fish the Margaree, I’d recommend them in a heartbeat! They even have this beautiful piece of art made out of all the different locally tied salmon flies!
Now a quick tour of the cabins, starting from the exterior you can tell they have all been recently renovated. From the bedrooms, to the bathrooms, the inside is really clean and modern providing you with all the regular necessities like fridge, stove & microwave.
But the best part… you are literally steps away from the river so after you’ve had a delicious lunch at the lodge, you can cool off from the afternoon summer heat by taking a dip in the cool waters of the Margaree River.
Before hitting the water, I drop by “The Tying Scotsman” a local fly shop owned by Alex to pick up some local flies tied by him of course, and to get some intel on the fishing.
I catch a few trout fly fishing on my own on the Margaree then the next day I go out with a local guide Paddy Poirer who was recommended to me by Alex at The Tying Scotsman and we get on even more fish!
Hope you all enjoyed the video as much as I enjoyed making it and putting it together :)

lol, mar-ga-ree, not Marj-a-ree :) great video BTW. Middle river is one of my favorite places to fish.
I met Paddy and his brother Steven on River Deny's one morning (never having met either before) got talking and turns out they are related to my spouses family who are from CB, ended up fishing with them for a few hours, great guys.
