After backing out the pickup tube bolt, tie a string around. That way it's easy to get if you drop it. Remove the string after you get it started again.
Duaine, that gives me an idea. I wonder if you wrap that string the right direction around the bolt, you could pull it to spin the bolt back in when reassembling to avoid having to modify the pick up tube. I think I’ll give that a shot when I do mine.
Why didn't you just shim the existing relief spring, or replace the spring (or both) in the original pump BEFORE swapping the entire pump ? Obviously the original pump may have seen some sag in the spring, allowing it to open prematurely, ESPECIALLY when cold under greater pressure, so a shim could have solved the problem much easier, or at worst, just a new spring. The gears looked mint, so I think an entire new pump assembly was a bit of a waste in both time and money. Remember, the filter area of the inside of the pan also has a relief valve, so this could have ended up being entirely pointless in the end. Just a thought.
Paul Leksunkin unless you have a 4x4! Then it’s skid plate, remove half shaft, disconnect CV axles, remove front differential, drop steering then you can finally get to the oil pan!
Everything was good information but you didn't talk about shimming the gear. Also instead of using that washer you should buy a $6 pickup tube griddle.
So I just done this. Used the washer and bolt trick. I did not replace the o ring. Now I have a low pressure warning on. Is it the o ring or is it the washer and bolt? When the engine is at 2000 rpm oil pressure is between 40 and 60lbs.
Rob Hudson definitely the O ring Replacing it is a must!!! That’s why ur loosing pressure. U need to replace it asap!!! Engine is probably starving for oil.
you had all this stuff apart and didnt replace the biggest cause of low oil pressure on these things? (the o-ring)....man--i wouldnt want to do that job over...
You have to drop the pan and replace the oil screen . if that is plugged up your going to still have low oil pressure . if you drop the pan first and change it out that might be the reason you have low oil pressure .
Estebahn Goldman Your correct that can also be an issue Luckily for this vehicle new oil pump fixed the problem. Thanks for the input will consider it for next project:)

Carlos Juarez yes there is inside pan If u put a screwdriver in between the pump and tube u can pry a little and pump will come apart without removing tube completely. I was able to do it not, that’s why i take pump gears out to have more play to remove it.
Nice video though, but that job scares me being in apartments. My oil pressure goes up when I drive, and only hits 0 when at idle, is that a bad pump symptom? 2004 Tahoe.
Robert Felp that sounds like a bad Oil Pressure Sensor, it’s behind engine close to fire wall, you’ll need a deep 24mm socket to remove and be able to reach way back there.
or bad o-ring on that pickup tube....a HUGE, KNOWN issue on these things.... a new o-ring may be all you need, but that involves dropping the pan...if i am doing tht much, i might as well do the whole pump, seals, and check the timing chain while at it...

Why cut and turn the plate instead of just putting a bolt and washer. The bolt and washer seems like a great idea instead of taking the chance of metal and such going in during the table cutting? Awesome bud, what's your magnet look like??
Ron Grace On older models like 1999-2002 is where i like doing that, makes it more secure, my preference But on newer models u can't turn plate so i put washer and bolt like you said. I have 4x4 and only had to unbolt differential the it dropped far enough to pull oil pan out. No sweat
What are the chances of it being the pump and not the O ring.?
Why did you take the pump apart for the gears?? I'm confused there.

A must when replacing pump, when u don’t want to remove oil pan. Otherwise if u remove oil pan no need to take oil pump apart.
Nice bolt washer trick!
If you smack the housing with a air hammer you don't have to struggle. Bust the housing. Trust me.
Why are you changing the oil pump? Usually the pick up tube seal is the only thing that fails and needs to be replaced. Was the pump bad?
