  • While I was visiting the NYPD 104th Precinct in Ridgewood, Queens, I decided to answer a comment about local street names.
    These are street names that are dedicated locally and refer mostly to an individual person. The suggestion that was offered to me was to tell the stories of the people who had streets named after them, and being that I like to bring you unique New York City stories I thought that this was a wonderful suggestion.
    In this video I tell you the story of five individuals who had streets named after them, and I finish off at the NYPD 104th Precinct and the former Queens County Courthouse, where parts of the film "The Wrong Man", starring Henry Fonda, was filmed back in the 1950s.

    Hey Richard, lots of research to get the history of these people that streets are named after, here in Michigan many are named after auto execs and union bosses……in Thailand they are named after former kings and prime ministers…….great work my friend, really enjoyed the video!

      The hardest part is trying to match the narration to the footage, it is a lot harder than it might appear ;) Here in New York there are obviously an untold number of street names named after 9/11 victims. The local community tends to like these type of local history videos, as evidenced by an early 15.0 CTR. That won't hold, but it is an excellent start, especially after the Williamsburg dud, lol :)

    Great idea for a whole new series of videos you could do, you will probably never run out of such streets and places named after people in an area the size of NYC! And you've done your usual comprehensive research to bring the names and stories of the people alive. Super!

      As an emergency measure, you know like when it is scorching hot or freezing cold outside, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a few of these saved on my computer for a quick and easy update in a pinch. There are a lot of them devoted to emergency service workers or war heroes, so there is always a story to tell.

    I love these little tidbits of information. That saying is so true. If you say the name the person won’t be forgotten. Fallen Heros should never be forgotten. No better way to keep their memory alive is by naming a street after them. I wonder if you Know this. I read the Atlas Mall was named after the famous bodybuilder Charles Atlas. A middle village resident. Love your work. Keep up the videos. Always learn something new!

      I am so glad that someone suggested this to me, I will be able to make quite a few stories from this idea. In regards to Charles Atlas, yes, in my Gangsters Graveyard video I mentioned that Atlas Mall was named after him. He is buried in St. John where all the gangsters are buried.

      It was a great suggestion for a video and I look forward to doing a couple more like this every now and then. In fact I was filming in Sunnyside, Queens today and I talked about two other fallen firefighters from 9/11. This weekend a police officer is having a street named for him just a couple of blocks away from me, so I might go ahead and film that.

    Very interesting.. That's some great NYC history.. You made a good point in the beginning of the video.. There are so many street names named after people and most never give it much thought at all but often there are some interesting stories behind them..

      When a viewer suggested it I thought that it was a fantastic idea. It is going to take some work but I can incorporate that idea into some future videos. When they have the ceremony for the officer whose name is not yet up, I might well take a walk back down there. I have a list of every named street in Queens so I will find some interesting stories to share. I also grabbed a short of a named street in Glendale when I was there. BTW, there is one near you on the corner of 60th Dr and Fresh Pond for George Gibbons Jr. Could be a short for you :)

      @@richardarthur-nycstories Good stuff, keep em coming.. Not only streets but also Highways and bridges have also been named after famous people in recent years.. But of course that is just obvious to everyone.. The streets named after people are more subtle and tend to go unnoticed.. OK, maybe I'll consider making a short about that street in the near future.. Thanks for the tip!

    Whoever suggested this theme is a genius as there must be a large number of men & women who have been honoured in this fashion. ( Over here we remember police officers differently with a memorial - a scheme devised by the film director Michael Winner)

      They had a ceremony literally a block away from me last weekend and I considered filming it, but to be honest I thought that it might be a bit tedious as a TH-cam video. I had considered making a story out of it because they were honoring a police officer who was killed just a few blocks away in 1981. After giving it some thought though, I decided to give it a pass. His children are younger than I am so I didn't want to infringe. I will have to look that up about Michael Winner.

    Hey Richard, you should check out and make a video about the crematorium on 65st in middle village. Would like to know the history about it, all I know is that biggie smalls was cremated there

    • @richardarthur-nycstories
      @richardarthur-nycstories  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      That is another excellent idea!! The building has a long history and along with Biggie you have people such as Lou Gehrig and J.P Morgan who were also cremated there, and I am certain that I can dig up (no pun intended) a whole bunch more. Thank you for the suggestion, it is an excellent idea. I will try to film it before it gets too hot (another pun, lol) to film outside and I can post it over the summer some time.
