  • Why is Joey Potter from Dawson's Creek so annoying?
    This only applies to seasons 1, 2 and episode 1 of season 3.
    I stopped watching after that.
    Let me know in the comments if she gets better later on!

    So glad someone said this! Joey was never happy no matter the situation, constantly miserable and negative about anything. She moaned when she and Dawson were friends, moaned when he dated Jen, then moaned when he dated her! I can't remember a time she just chose to be happy in early seasons, just whining non stop :p

      She demanded that Dawson risk their friendship to date her, then proceeded to whine the whole time once he did - just to abandon him as soon as she got a taste of what she wanted, all under the guise of needing to find herself and needing to be single to do so, just to turn around and instantly start dating another guy. No matter what happened, Joey was complaining about it and blaming everyone else. I loved her in Season 1, but I realized pretty quickly how horrible she is by Season 2 lmao

Never happy, dramatic, tries to turn things and everybody else, smart-mouth at every turn, then turns around and tries to be sweet and cute and woe is me. It's been sickening since season 2. But even when everything was going right for Joey - even when she was getting her way and everyone was making her the center of attention she demanded to be - she was miserable; and she let everyone know it. I loved Joey in Season 1, but throughout the show I realized over and again that she's not only the worst character in Dawson's Creek: she's the villain. The show stopped focusing on Dawson and it became the Joey show, and no matter what she was NEVER happy; everything had to be some over-the-top, grandiose spectacle of misery for poor little Joey wherein she says one thing then does another - wants one thing, then rejects it once she gets it.
      She willingly broke up two life-long best friends. She left Dawson because she "needed to be single", then instantly started dating another guy: twice. She tried to be the smartest in the room at college like she was back home and as soon as she got put in her place she acted so put upon and deeply hurt. The world was always unfair to Joey, according to her, but she always ALWAYS got her way.
      The fact that this is the only video I could even find that gives an honest critique of Joey Potter is astounding. She's the absolute worst lmao

    • @hanburgundy4317
      @hanburgundy4317 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Hazel Allison
      Dawson's just naive. His world view is based on his love of movies, and we see his preconceptions broken time and again throughout the show: he learns and grows out of his childishness, and realizes through loss that the world isn't like the movies he loves. That he isn't the protagonist, and that it's not even his show; he's a side character lol
      Yeah, he can be a real whiner at times - but Pacey was a terrible friend to Dawson, too. Pretty much that whole trio were the worst characters. Gran was the best.

    Joey spends a lot of time talking about how they analyze everything and she's "tired of it," but most of the time they're literally not analyzing anything. It's more like word salad--Dawson wants to know what's going on, to "figure things out" and she just gets frustrated by him asking about it. She never actually digs into her feelings, she just gets angry and passes off her smartass commentary as "smart deep analysis." Dawson says it's good to analyze, and Joey says "it doesn't get us anywhere." Oh, I wonder why. Maybe because she's not actually interested in having a calm, productive and healthy conversation. She literally does not allow the analysis/conversation to take place. She just storms off in a huff.

Joey is portrayed as a jealous, self-centered teenager in season 1 and 2 especially and the writers seem to lean too much on the fact that the girls watching the show will relate to her automatically and feel no need to call her out on her bullshit. She tends to like any guy who's into her just because they like her. She hurt Dawson so many times because she liked to be worshipped, so she broke up with him and got back together for a moment, caused a drama, so he couldn't move on, and she liked that. She dumps one guy and moves to another one in a few days. Season 6 was just hillarious when Eddie left, so she decided to try something with Pacey cause she was bored, and then Eddie came back, so she dumped Pacey! HAHA this was just a perfect summary of how shallow and fake she is.

She was arguing that they have gotten too grown to have the same relationship they had as kids, they now have “sexuality” which is awkward to talk so openly specially with someone of the opposite sex. She asked how often he “took his dog for a walk” and when he was embarrassed to answer it proved that she was right and they can’t tell each other everything like kids anymore. She cried because she realized growing up had changed their relationship. But then Dawson decides to tell her at the last second so they both laugh happily. It’s one of my favorite scenes

Perhaps it proves that friends remain friends. Joey and Pacey really hated each other as friends because there was( apparently, although I never noticed an actual attraction) underlying tension. I felt the same for a long time. Only recently finished the whole show in one go, and looking at it from my current age and some distance, I finally understand her somewhat. She is a teenager, in 90's US American culture, without parents or at least good, stable role models, indoctrinated to feel awkward about everything she feels and represents, pre-internet and thus without access to less biased information. It makes sense that she believes everything she feels because she has nothing else to compare it with. She's too smart for her own good and can't accept her own irrationality, so she rationalized every nonsensical whimsy and stupid decision. At this point, I can relate to some of this, seeing how growing up like her, having to take responsibility at a way too young age, would make you act like that. And that's also clarified in the later seasons.
      Seen as a whole, the way the characters develop does make sense. Doesn't make some of the early stuff less cringeworthy. But so is most stuff I remember from my own youth :)

    Excellent analysis.
    I like the character of Joey, but very quickly the writers made a caricature of her. The girl angry all the time, always frustrated, incoherent, and who leaves the room at the slightest annoyance. The worst part is that so many people loved this character. As if Joey was a surety for their own contradictions.
    I also think Katie Holmes' s questionable acting makes it worse. At the very beginning of the series, she did not have all these facial expressions, it was very good. Then the grimaces came, and it just got worse and worse. As if the directors asked her to always play more "the insecure and aggressive girl next door".
    I would have liked to see what Selma Blair would have done with the role. It would have been interesting to see her interact with James.

He was Joey's only friend till she was 15 and his family was hers since she didn't have any parents around. He helped when her mother died ect. So I think Joey just felt guilty about leaving him . Tbh she never romantically goes to Dawson after Pacey until Pacey breaks up with her. A teenage girl, who can never make up her mind. I knew about 10 of those back in High School. I sort of had my own Joey, the girl next door who I´d known since we we´re little. We started hanging out more around age 13 and when we finally became a couple 3 years later, we´d been beating around the bush with it for two years (when we kissed for the first time) until we finally opened up about how we really felt about each other. Even after that, it took a good while to transition from friends to being a couple. I absolutely get why it didn´t work for Dawson and Joey, because it isn´t as easy as many people think it is, when the rules in your inter-personal relationship changes.
    The reason she, Jen and Pacey worked for me as a characters is in great part because they´re imperfect and make their share of dumb decision´s along the way, like every teenager/young person does. Teens change their minds all the time, one week they have a crush on this person, the next it´s someone else. Compared to most girls I knew, I´d say she´s about par for the course. As far as the "cringe factor", I don´t think they would have come off as realistic, if there hadn´t been an embarrassing moment here and there.
    As far as it being a middle aged man that wrote it, well that´s the same as it is with most shows of that or any era preceding it. I´ll take this writing over the forced political correctness that makes most new series unwatchable for me. They´ve become so afraid that some interest group will take offense, that it´s hurt the realism. It´s either that or something like "Euphoria", that´s like one long, gritty PSA to me. DC wasn´t perfect by any means and the very long seasons compared to today´s standards, meant you always had a forgettable episode or two each season. You´re leaving the series just before it becomes really good IMO. Season 3 is to me where they hit their peak and after that it´s a steady decline until the last few episodes, that are almost as good as the best ones from it´s "glory days".

    • @MyAccountForCommenting
      @MyAccountForCommenting 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I agree with this 100%.
      When the things the kids do don't make sense, I blame it on the fact that they're teenagers. As teens, their actions *should* be confusing and irrational.
      Also, I find this show so refreshingly non-PC. I feel the same way you do about PC ruining shows (that's actually one reason I prefer to watch old shows like this).
      This video is funny but I also feel bad that this person is so cynical, because the show is actually very entertaining.

    • @Phrankster163
      @Phrankster163 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sebastianpirela7329 As far as YA shows go, one you definitely need to check out is "My So-Called Life", starring Claire Danes and Jared Leto. It´s very much the framework for every good YA series (including Dawson´s Creek) that came after it and was honest in a revolutionary way for it´s time (around 5 years before DC started), especially for a show on network television. The only bad thing about it, is that it only lasted one season, before it´s stars went off to become movie stars in stead. The upside of that, is that there´s pretty much no mediocre episodes to speak of and they´re all of a very high quality.
      If you´ve never seen "Degrassi", then it´s time to get started right away! All the episodes are on TH-cam and I can almost guarantee that you´ll fall in love with it right away. I was around ten or eleven in 1988, when the original series started airing here and it was pretty big throughout the early 90´s. "The Next Generation" with a new cast then started up in 2001 and ran for a very long time, until it finished up with "Next Class" on Netflix. Degrassi may not be perfect and was shot on a budget, that was almost laughable compared to many US productions, but once you fall in love with it, you´ll be in love with it forever. There´s just a certain charm to it, that nothing else can replicate.
      "Party of Five" is another one, I can recommend and a series, that was huge in the 90´s. It´s about a group of siblings, whose parents have been killed in a car crash, so now they have to survive as a family on their own. It stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Neve Campbell, among lots of other future stars and deals with most of the classic teen subjects in a very tasteful way, that I wish there was more of today. That most of the main cast went on to movie or further TV fame, won´t come as a surprise to you either, if you watch it, because it´s very good all the way through, as is the writing.
      The next one I have to recommend, is "Buffy - the Vampire Slayer", which of course has a huge supernatural element to it, in that our heroine is a super hero, but also tells plenty of great high school stories and does it in an amazingly inventive way. The love stories in it are some of the best in TV history and I can´t recommend it enough. It went for seven seasons and some are better than others, but as a whole they kept a fantastic standard throughout the series. Joss Whedon, who created it and wrote many of the episodes, has since gone on to write many of the Marvel movies, while you might remember Allison Hannigan, who played Willow, from playing Lily on "How I Met Your Mother" or David Boreanaz, who played Angel, from his role as detective Booth on "Bones". After you´ve watched Buffy, you can then watch "Angel", the best spin-off series of all time.
      One final one would have be "Roswell", the series that brought Katherine Heigl to fame. It´s again in the supernatural realm, since half of the main cast are aliens, who landed in Roswell, New Mexico (as per the urban legend about it), but where it really works is the love stories in it and how inventive it was in it´s storytelling. It has to be said, that there is some decline from season one to season two (which ended up being the last one), but it´s still worth a watch for how great and exciting that first season was.
      What the old WB network did so well (and what the CW do their best to copy to this day) was create series based on characters, that were relatable to a large audience, since they all represented something in all of us. They were diverse, but for the sake of what the story needed, not to force diversity into it. Shock effect was used when needed, but not overdone, like it is today and most of all, they had some damn good writers, who were allowed to tell the stories, they wanted to tell.
      I hope, that´s a good enough answer for you.

I like how u broke down what each was about what made it so good and also talked about the actors which I definitely didn’t expect. I will probably start with My So-Called life, then party of five and Degrassi and I will probably end with the supernatural type of shows. Anyways thanks again for such a good answer

Yes teenagers have sex but for a teenager it more of a exploration and experimental thing. 15 year olds tell their teacher "You'll miss the best sex you ever had." First off they are 15, they don't know what they are doing and secondly gross.

I know it will sound shallow but it gets annoying how every guy in the show is utterly in love with her. I do consider that she is pretty as the other characters in the series. I think all the girls here have their own charm. But I can’t see Joey as the goddess the program is trying to convey.

    When I was a kid, I felt really bad for Joey. Mom dead, dad in jail..it's not easy.
    But now I'm an adult, and I just keep thinking--did no one consider getting this girl therapy?
    Anybody would struggle in her position. Particularly a teenager.
    But everyone around her was so busy being overly nice to her to try to make her shitty situation okay that no one considered meeting their adult responsibilities and taking real care of her.
    That goes for every other character on the show, too. They all went through really serious, difficult, traumatizing life events. They all did the best they could for each other, but they needed real help--not just therapy, but real resources.
    I feel like this show is a cautionary tale about the dangers of relying on a small town community to take care of each other and make everything okay. Clearly does not work well.

    Used to be a fan of DC (alongside other WB teen shows). I think the moment you start to question the stories, the characters, their behaviour and the morals of a show, you're starting to lose a show. It's okay to think about what you are watching, but in-depth analyses are not good. Because you are watching fictional shows that pretend to be grounded in our reality, but they are far from realistic. They are made for entertainement. While you are sitting on the couch watching actors acting out "exciting" stories, you are not moving on in your life. You are simply watching other people making money, being creative, while wasting your time (I have nothing against some entertainment from time to time). Though you would say you love Dawson or Jen or whoever, you wouldn't want to be friend with them.
    TV shows in general pretend to be deep and complex, in fact they are recycling the same tropes and story building blocks again and again. It wouldn't work any other way. Not all shows are necessarily bad, even a DC isn't the worst show ever, I just would like it a lot less than I used to like it (minus the last two seasons when the show lost what it was all about) but they are not what they used to be. Also characters have to be two-dimensional to behave a certain way over and over again. Things have to be predictable like in sitcoms. You can't make a main character move to another city or do something crazy. One seasons A loves B, then they split up, then B loves C, then that doesn't work and in the end, A and B finally fall in love.
    For me a turning point was, when I started to be more around real people in the real world, while questioning what I was watching at the same time. Many viewers simply trust media creators with their lives, without daring to critisize what they are watching, because Kevin Williamson or Amy Sherman-Palladino are just geniuses. You can see what being a big fan of something does to a person's brain. Sorry for not talking to much about Dawson's Creek itself. You probably get my point.
    P.S.: It's funny how I read several times how Gilmore Girls fans finally realise how awful Lorelai is or how privileged Rory was. I myself didn't care about that. I just watched the show for laughs, drama and entertainment. When I started to question the morals of the girls and their behaviour, the show started to fall apart. Also viewers's age has something to with that. Teen shows are made for young people with little experience. It's easy to impress children, teenagers or young adults. Of course those like Lorelai and Rory more than the old mean Emily Gilmore.

      Ps if you really watch the show Dawson never tired to control her. Never. He let her do what ever she wanted.
      Truth is pacey tried to control her far more then Dawson ever did. He the one that would throw fit or use Dawson to hurt Joey.
      Out side of her father witch put her in danger Dawson never once told her to do anything.

      jory got with jen EX who cheated on jen, i thing she did that to hurt jen becouse jen slept with dawson.
      and dawson when him and jen grachen and natisha break up it all mature, only joey there a problem becosue joey is the problem not dawson.
      ps the story was written were she was running from dawson not pacey. but they did the will they wont they for far to long. they should have given dawson and joey a year in season 5 and then break them up with dawson dad death and a job offer in LA.

    Cringe show. The worst part is the Dawson/Joey relationship where they can't be together, push each other towards other people, but they don't want each other to be with anyone else. When Dawson's dad died, this should have been the defining moment of the Joey/Dawson romance. Instead, Dawson ran off with Jen and Joey was happy she didn't need to be there for Dawson. Yet, some people find this true love. This was one of the most toxic and dysfunctional relationships in the entire show.

    This is a show written for teens, played by actors in their 20's (who should be teenagers) with dialogue written by cork sniffing bitter 30yo people reflecting back at their jaded youth. What could possible go wrong?
    All I'm thinking while watching this show is how unrealistic, rehearsed and forced the dialogue sounds. Witty? No... they are teenagers, and most teenagers don't talk like that. They should do stupid stuff, learn from it and THEN only AFTER the facts of their dumb behavior should start analyzing/reflecting. This show is CLEARLY written from the writers high horse sitting POV.
    And no, there is NOTHING likable about Joey's character. They wrote her without any joy in her heart. Ffs let her pet a puppy or something... Instead of balancing her character out a little we always get her PMS-ing on cocaine.
    Positive things in this show are the locations and settings. These have a pleasant vibe to it. Especially during sunset or sunrise. And the actors did their best with what they had to deliver.
    IMO!

    Joey wanted to be with dawson. Dawson chooses to br with. Joey doesn't want to be with dawson anymore. Dawson tries to understand. Joey change her mind. Dawson accept easily. Joey kiss another. Dawson gets upset while joey says it's his fault and all that is about her. Dawson tries to work it out, but joey says he's more important to her than anything and this is the reason she is dumping him. Dawson tries deal with his pain, but there she comes arguing he was dealing with it fine. Joey start dating the she kissed but discovered he was gay, so she gets back to dawnson. Dawson discovers her father almost gets them killed but joey can forget her father but him who save them and protect her.
    That's was enough for me.

    Oh it gets worse they then have her and Pacey fall in love which is the only time she is not completely annoying through the whole show just to break them up again because of dawson after he spends the whole 3rd season trying to keep them apart and joey let's him! Like what the hell why you letting a guy control you to then spend season 4 with pacey who she was with longer than anyone on the show to then turn around and treat him badly because she was still letting dawson get to her lying and saying she didn't lose her virginity to pacey telling pacey she will never love him like dawson making him feel like the lesser man even tho he was better than dawson in every way and Pacey breaks up with her for it which she deserves then for her to kiss dawson literally like 3 episodes after it was so stupid then season 5 was crap cause they basically pretended her and pacey didn't date and they tried to make dawson and joey a thing even tho everyone hated them and knew they never shut the hell up and do not belong together then they have sex in season 6 while he has a girlfriend wtf! So yeah they don't stay together then the writers were like ok we will separate them for the whole season trying to put her with Eddie who was just a complete mistake to finally put her and Pacey back together and then break them up cause of course joey is stupid and runs back to a guy who clearly was not right for her to then her and dawson in the last few episodes have to talk again boring and Pacey and dawson fighting over her and then we see the finale episode which is my favorite episode because the writers even had to point out how stupid she was through the whole show and how she was always contradicting herself and she gets to be with pacey the only man who she actually wasn't completely annoying with because he never just sat there and talked he was about action and taking risk which she clearly needed and they ended up together and stupid dawson ended up alone but joey didn't really deserve pacey but pacey deserved to be happy so I liked the ending but yeah no she is annoying and judgmental and was so rude to Jen and pacey who were such broken people who made some bad choices but hey so did dawson and joey this video proves that very well I loved it and the extra parts talking we so funny

      I agree with most of this other than she never told Pacey she’d never love him like she loved Dawson. That was never said. The reason they broke up was stupid but not actually because of Joey this time. He got extremely insecure and lashed out on her because of it. She constantly tried to tell him Dawson had nothing to do with their relationship but he kept comparing himself and continued to feel badly about himself especially because she was going to college and he was not.

    • @Dropletsojoy
      @Dropletsojoy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually think Joey was a great girlfriend to Pacey. She clearly loved Pacey way more than Dawson and always gave him reassurance. There's so many examples when she tells Pacey that Dawson is her past and Pacey is here future. It's not her fault Pacey has insecurities from when he was a kid. Pacey's family have always said he's a loser and Dawson was better than him but..... Joey chose Pacey! Some quotes I remember: ' Dawson knows my past, my future lies with you' , 'us, we grew up together, when I'm with Dawson I'm 15 again, in his bedroom having the same argument again and again' , when she got drunk and was worried all episode because she wanted to go to college but also wanted to stay in cape side with Pacey. Then he tells her he's gonna go to where ever she is and shes super happy again. There's loads more examples but yeah. The only thing that bothered me was her lie about her virginity but I understood why she did it. That episode was the 1st time her friendship with Dawson was back to normal after like a year and she didn't want to lose it again. As Dawson had already told her 'I'm the only one it could potentially kill' - talking about whether they had sex on the boat. Also I forget about s5, the writers had no clue what to do with the characters.

    Thats cool! Its not for everybody! I thought I would hate it but actually loved it. But you stopped before ssn 3, which is widely seen as the best ssn. And first half of ssn 4. I do agree that Joey is annoying at times but they all have moments. DC was extremely popular! It was the #1 teen drama during its run in America. It aired in many other contries also. It only ended because the actors decided to move onto movies while on top. They didn't want to run 10 yrs like BH 90210 or Friends. If I really wanted to I can pick apart every iconic teen show. All of them are just recycled & rebranded for newer generations but they are huge business so they will always be around! That includes Stranger Things & Wednesday! I like those also & could pick them apart for similar reasons but I understand that they are what they are for their time & the masses love them just like they did Dawsons Creek!

    An annoying character and also annoying in real life, seriously she is only somewhat remembered for this show and marrying Tom Cruise. Also, I think the reason Joey was so moody and weird with Dawson is because she has serious trust issues. Her mom died and her father was constantly letting the family down. She didn't really have anyone to turn to except Dawson, and when they started dating it just made communication more difficult. Dawson is also really self-absorbed and has a lot of difficulty understanding other people's problems.

    • @az21bob666

      but dawson spend a lot of time help other with there problems, it just if he complain about his people go your life is easy, even when his life fall apart they still do that.
      i mean when dawson said my mom cheated my family breaking about, joey like well you still have a mom. (bitch) when brook died and gracthen break up with him, no one seem to care but when pacey break up with joey dawson spend a mouth helping her feel better.

    • @clairew.9734
      @clairew.9734 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@az21bob666 I totally agree that Dawson had every right to be upset about his parents and that Joey just made it about her. I think she sees Dawson's life as 'perfect' and has trouble understanding that his family can have real problems too. However, Dawson has a repeated history of trying to control Joey. Most of the time (especially in earlier seasons) when he is comforting her or reaching out to her, he has an ulterior motive. Usually he tries to guilt her into feeling a certain way about him because they are 'soulmates'. But you bring up some good points

    • @michaelcorcoran8768
      @michaelcorcoran8768 ปีที่แล้ว

      By the end of the show you could argue Dawson might have had a history of trying to control her but at this point he didn't. If anything she was trying to control him. Yet remember this is season 1 and 2. Everything we know about their relationship has yet to have happened.
