He was a close personal friend of Robin Williams. I think he was one of the groomsmen at WIlliams' wedding, I think. It makes me smile to think of how much fun they must have had together. If anyone could make Robin Laugh, it's Sam. Also, Robin and Craig Ferguson came up together as comedians and, their interviews were also "fire." Imagine the kind of friendships that make Robin Williams laugh.
I still can’t imagine Craig Ferguson being hired by any comedy club. He just is NOT funny. His late show is unwatchable- I’ve never laughed once. He seems like a nice guy, but… nothing. Maybe it’s a CBS thing. All of their comedy sucks.

My uncle used to work security backstage at NBC and he often would work the Tonight Show. Johnny Carson was actually rather shy offstage, but he was friendly, especially if he saw you all the time, so he would often talk to my uncle. I remember when Sam Kinison was on the show that time, Johnny really did like Sam for real, he said that Sam was a really nice guy and very interesting to talk to.
Sam was a frequent guest of Chicago Radio Star Steve Dahl, and two things became obvious: Sam was a truly likable guy and he was funny and sharp as a tack.
He was indeed brilliant, but Sam himself would have disagreed with you + said (he’s got n record saying it too) that the funniest + best stand-up comedian of all time is DOUG STANHOPE...
