@@alexmansour Unlikely - the stands were set back from the pitch in the River Plate stadium and nobody heard a thing in the second half when Holland were dominating. At the Jalisco in 1970 there was an attendance of 107,412 but here there was only 71,483.
You also have to consider the fact that Argentina won the world cup in front of thousands of Argentineans. They won it in the capital city of their own country in front of their own compatriots. That rarely happens and when it does, it's exciting.

That second Argentine goal is eerily similar to that of Alvarez second goal in the Croatia game in the 22 World Cup where he took the ball and ran, bounced it off a player in the penalty box evaded the keeper and still scored. It's pure magic almost defies the laws of physics

Argentina’s second goal was in fact an own goal. You have to see the footage looking down from behind the goal which does exist on the Internet. Look at Mario Kempes - Argentina 1978 - 6 goals - TH-cam. At 1.25 Suurbier boots the ball in trying to clear as Kempes flails at it with his right foot but fails to make contact. The standard footage shown from the side does look like Mario touched it in. A classic case of the camera lying.

I think it has to do with profile. Kempes was serious and cold blooded, let his game speak on his behalf.

Yes, the Dutch were technically awesome but boy, the Argentine attacks were so fluid and impressive. Kempes and Luque were like swashbuckling cavaliers leading one thrilling charge after another.
Argentina were worthy champions - an attacking side built to go forward but many of the other finalists were so obsessed with tactics that only a few were worth remembering.

Yes Cruyff didnt go because of the military junta ruling Argentina. There were others I believe. He made an ethical moral choice not a footballung one. Like choosing Barcelona over Real Madrid.
@@rogerparker4468 _The junta wasn't an issue for him.... decades later we heard the real reason why he hadn't gone... a kidnap happened involving his family and he didn't want to leave his family for a long period. Pity for us because he personally brought our team to Argentina but stayed home. He already had said he wouldn't go to Argentina during the qualification so it wasn't a big surprise but nobody did understand his decision. Disappointing it was because he was such a great player/ leader.

I say this with all respect to great players of today like Messi and Ronaldo. Kempes showed his worth at club level, and ALSO at international level, something that Messi or Ronaldo haven't quite shown in a World Cup. Also have a look closely at Kempes schins. He was playing with his socks down. Mate they were warriors in those days. If you look at this final, you'll see what awful fouls Kempes took. But that didn't stop Kempes from still going forward and finishing even a great team like the Netherlands.
