Transformers One is not a prequel to the 1984 series. In the original cartoons, Megatron was already Megatron and he just met and used Orion Pax when the Aerialbots time travelled to the time before Orion became Optimus cause they thought Decepticons were cool and wanted to join them and leave the Autobots. Surprising to new fans, Tranformers is a Multiverse type of series and so just like Marvel and DC, they have been times where different Optimus Primes from different universes meet up.

The Bumblebee movie was released 2018, Transformers Cyberverse was the cartoon in 2016-2020 with Beastwars characters returning to the fore front in both War for Cybertron Kingdom toy line and Rise of the Beasts live action movie in 2021. This year also saw the current cartoon Earthspark make its debut and the animated movie Transformers One retelling the Prime/\Megatron origin story. The War for Cybertron trilogy was superseded by the Legacy trilogy toy line to be replaced this year with Legend of the Primes. Anew cartoon/toy line is due next year and Generations continues to be separated into Studio Series (On screen accurate figures of live action/one characters) Studio Series 86 (on screen accurate figures of G1 figures from the 86 movie), Studio Series Gamer edition (on screen depictions of selected video game characters), Legacy/Legends of the Primes trilogies (modern takes on classic characters from all across the transformers universe inc G1, G2, Beastwars, Unicron Trilogy, Prime, Animated, RID etc). Transformers Generation 1 is the first Transformers Universe and here as you could see many things change, like Megatron is a gun and not a tank, that Optimus and Megatron were never friends, Megatron was never called D-16 but was always called Megatron, and that the name D-16 is the model of the weapon into which Megatron transforms, the first appearance of Galvatron the primordial God of destruction and chaos and that he cannot die since he is unique for the entire Transformer Multiverse. And the appearance and rise of Optimus Prime's successor called Rodimus Prime formerly known as Hot Rod.
D-16 is Megatron's Japanese catalog number (Destron number 16). Destron was what Decepticons were named in Japan. He was a Walther P 38 model gun. I believe D-16 was first used in one of the more recent comics... definitely not the original Marvel runs.
Actually, the autobots originally outnumbered the decepticons by quite a lot. Because the Decepticons were military vehicles they were all bigger than the autobots and more powerful, so they were able to take on a lot more civilian mini cars. Most decepticons towered over the autobots.
In the continuity of the animated series that the movie was based on: we're shown that the bots who eventually became the Decepticons were designed for military use while the Autobots where meant to be commercial vehicles. Ergo, 90% of the Autobots bodies were designed to have an alternate mode that would operate on the ground. Even ignoring that, after the first 2 or 3 episodes they would only show the Decepticons having the ability to fly in or out of their alt forms. The only exceptions to this (the alt mode thing anyway) in the cartoon up to the point of the movie were: Swoop from the Dinobots, The Aerialbots, Powerglide, Cosmo, Omega Supreme, and Skyfire for the Autobots. The Decepticons didn't really get ground vehicle forms until the show introduced the Constructicons; and later adding an all car team in the Stunticons, followed by Swindle, Onslaught, and Brawl from the Combaticons, them all being made from rebuilt WW2 military vehicles. In reality: it was probably something to do with balancing out their portrayal in the show, seeing how the toys sold, and how much they could get away with given the technology and the concept materials at the time.
And Sideswipe.... The G1 Sideswipe character could canonically fly as well as he had a jet pack. Though initially that was planned to be Sunstreaker's ability by the bio writers (off of his engine block becoming a get pack for him) but their bio's were switched. In one episode Optimus even borrows Sideswipe's jetpack in one episode).
The actor doing Unicron is very famous from the 30s. Many things. This however was his last role and he didn't even get it called it That Damn Robit Thingy

Primus really likes to choose rebels as his chosen one. Hot Rod and Orion Pax had very similar personalities, and both were chosen to wield the matrix. This movie also changed kids movies due to the massive backlash of killing off Optimus Prime. Kids literally locked themselves in the closet crying, it was traumatizing

Why most Decepticons can fly? Answer is that in Cybertron, there are two classes which is Civil bots and Military bots. Military bots have the ability to fly wheras Civils does not. When the Cybertron war broke out, the Civils join the Autobots and Military personnels joins the Decepticons.

Also, unlike other kids, the death of Optimus Prime didn't hit me as hard as it did others, but then I was an avid viewer of Robotech, which had quite a lot of named characters getting killed, so I was used to it.
2 curse words were added to the movie to get a PG rating so parents would be forced to sit in the theater with their kids so they would see all the new characters and know which toys to buy
I really don't like seeing Optimus die in any incarnation. He's my #1 favorite Autobot/Transformer, but damn if he didn't have a really great final fight against Megatron. Also....The universal greeting is understood by most creatures in the galaxy. It can be roughly translated to "Hello, we mean you no harm," or "We come in peace," or "Do you hate dirtwad Decepticons as much as we do?"
It's a bit of a running joke by now isn't it, Optimus dying. He died at least twice in the original comic run too, one of which was for a REALLY dumb reason!

After Megatron cheated, Prime still won at the expense of sacrificing some NPCs in the VR, then declared himself unworthy of winning as he'd compromised his principles. In VR. After Megatron had obviously cheated. So he let himself be blown up, and therefore let Megatron win the macguffin which could have given the Decepticons unlimited energy, allowing them to steamroller all their enemies. It was... not his finest hour 🤨

So way back in the day Hasbro bought a line of robot toys that turned into vehicles, and a line of robot toys that turned into objects, handed the whole mess to Marvel Comics and said make a backstory. Most of the animated series have slightly different origin stories for the characters and even for the ultimate beings Primus and Unicron. Megatron was one of a think 6 toys that turned into guns but he and Shockwave were the 2 that really made the jump. This movie takes place between season 2 and season 3 of the cartoons, and was just an excuse to kill off a bunch of characters to bring out a bunch of new toys. Even with that the optimus prime VS megatron fight scene in this movie in my opinion will always be the ultimate Transformers fightscene.
When you say you should "watch the show" you're going to have to be more specific. Depending on how you count them, there are over 20 Transformers series at this point. A lot of them are in their own little bubble of continuity and aren't connected to each other. So you could start watching practically anywhere and not get lost.
Another classic 80s movie with a hard hitting soundtrack is THE WRAITH with Charlie Sheen and rest of cast before they were famous. And can't forget Stephen King CHRISTINE VA classic soundtrack music from 60s all the way to 80s and was the first movie to use Bad to the Bone in it

This movie was the best & worst thing Sunbow Studios did, & the reason for their demise. Backlash to so many character deaths, especially Optimus' was the reason Duke wasn't killed off in the GI Joe animated movie. If you can find it, there's a DVD/Blu ray anniversary edition version that has an easter egg documentary about the backlash. There were death threats. Rodimus Prime, who was supposed to take over from Optimus, never took with the audience, so Optimus was brought back, but the damage was done. You'll notice that in the current day movies & animation, if Optimus IS killed off, he's always brought back by the end to "set things right". Even to this day the powers that be won't take the risk of permanently getting rid of him. I never counted how many 'bots on both sides were killed off, but if I made a drinking game from it, I know I'd get plastered. I had 2 of the toys that were killed off in the film, you'll never know how pissed I was. Fun fact: StarScream was also brought back, however the powers that be were never able to capitalize on his resurrection, since the gu8y who did his voice (& the original Cobra Commanders) died in real life not too long after.

New G2 toys in 94 including a new Prime and Megs and a further new Prime in 95 known as Laser Prime. G2 now also over Hasbro decided one last throw of the dice in 1996 and Moved the whole brand to its newly acquired Kenner brand and they decided to go completely organic and created Beastwars where all characters turned into biological animals, here instead of Autobots versus Decepticon it was Maximal v Predacon we were introduced to Optimus Primal and Beast Megatron Japan while waiting for a second/third season of the animated show created by Mainframe created their own Beastwars shows called Beastwars II and Beastwars Neo, Beastwars was followed in 99 by Beast Machines. Japan got season 2 and 3 of the US Beastwars and Beastmachines together and quickly moved onto a show called Car Robots in 2000 which like Beastwars II mixed beast and machine characters together. Hasbro were developing a new trilogy but also imported Car Robots as Transformers RID in 2001. So each iteration of transformers up to this point was supported by a cartoon, this year however a secondary toy line was started known as Classics, not supported by a cartoon or comic it was basically modern takes of classic Generation 1 characters this line was known as Henkei in Japan, the name changed to Universe in 2006 and finally to Generations around 2012 the fandom dub this toy line CHUG after the multiple name changes. Today Generations itself is split into multiple sub lines continuing to make modern versions of characters from across all iterations of the franchise from G1, G2, Beastwars right up to the live action movie characters and Transformers One. 2003 Hasbro’s new trilogy started with Armada, moving to Energon in 2004 and Cybertron in 2005. 2006 saw this replaced with Transformers Animated and the live action movie franchise starts in 2007. Revenge of the fallen releases 2009 and the new cartoon Transformers Prime starts 2010. At this point Hasbro decide they want to shore up the live action movies together with Transformers Prime and some new video games that were in the works called War for Cybertron and fall of Cybertron and a new preschool cartoon called Rescuebots into a colossal continuity they called The aligned continuity, it didn’t take off too well so was ditched eventually. Japan did a series of web based cartoons as a follow on from Transformers Prime called Transformers Go and then there was a Hasbro continuation in 2014 called Transformers RID (different to the 2001 show of the same name) we got the video games with toys for these launched in the Generations line followed by a 30th anniversary line up in 2015 Generations started a trilogy of toys known as the Primewars trilogy featuring Combiner Wars, Titans Return and Power of the Primes, this was the first Generations line up to have a cartoon produced by Machinima exclusively on line but for the most part the cartoon bore no resemblance to the toys or storyline which was also being told in a comic book by IDW Publishing. Next came a new Trilogy in Generations called War For Cybertron (Siege, Earthrise & Kingdom) this was supported by a Netflix produced cartoon meanwhile we had Dark of the moon movie in 2011, Age of extinction 2014 and The last Knight in 2016 in live action movie world and by the time we got to Age of extinction the toy line was split, simplified gimmick based toys aimed at younger kids remained in direct main line packaging, more screen accurate, complicated toys aimed at older kids and adult collectors were moved into the Generations line as this was the target audience of CHUG/Generations. The Bumblebee movie was released 2018, Transformers Cyberverse was the cartoon in 2016-2020 with Beastwars characters returning to the fore front in both War for Cybertron Kingdom toy line and Rise of the Beasts live action movie in 2021. This year also saw the current cartoon Earthspark make its debut and the animated movie Transformers One retelling the Prime/\Megatron origin story. The War for Cybertron trilogy was superseded by the Legacy trilogy toy line to be replaced this year with Legend of the Primes. Anew cartoon/toy line is due next year and Generations continues to be separated into Studio Series (On screen accurate figures of live action/one characters) Studio Series 86 (on screen accurate figures of G1 figures from the 86 movie), Studio Series Gamer edition (on screen depictions of selected video game characters), Legacy/Legends of the Primes trilogies (modern takes on classic characters from all across the transformers universe inc G1, G2, Beastwars, Unicron Trilogy, Prime, Animated, RID etc). In addition to Main line and Generations there have been and continues to be other toy lines since early 2000’s both official `Hasbro/Takara lines and licensed third party toys/models including Binaltech/Alternators, Worlds Smallest, Robotmasters, Masterpiece/MPG to name a few and it’s continues to keep apace, till all are one.
As a five-year-old kid seen that moving in theaters I was traumatized when Optimus died
Transformers Generation 1 is the first Transformers Universe and here as you could see many things change, like Megatron is a gun and not a tank, that Optimus and Megatron were never friends, Megatron was never called D-16 but was always called Megatron, and that the name D-16 is the model of the weapon into which Megatron transforms, the first appearance of Galvatron the primordial God of destruction and chaos and that he cannot die since he is unique for the entire Transformer Multiverse.
And the appearance and rise of Optimus Prime's successor called Rodimus Prime formerly known as Hot Rod.
D-16 is Megatron's Japanese catalog number (Destron number 16). Destron was what Decepticons were named in Japan. He was a Walther P 38 model gun.
I believe D-16 was first used in one of the more recent comics... definitely not the original Marvel runs.
Actually, the autobots originally outnumbered the decepticons by quite a lot. Because the Decepticons were military vehicles they were all bigger than the autobots and more powerful, so they were able to take on a lot more civilian mini cars. Most decepticons towered over the autobots.

In the continuity of the animated series that the movie was based on: we're shown that the bots who eventually became the Decepticons were designed for military use while the Autobots where meant to be commercial vehicles. Ergo, 90% of the Autobots bodies were designed to have an alternate mode that would operate on the ground. Even ignoring that, after the first 2 or 3 episodes they would only show the Decepticons having the ability to fly in or out of their alt forms. The only exceptions to this (the alt mode thing anyway) in the cartoon up to the point of the movie were: Swoop from the Dinobots, The Aerialbots, Powerglide, Cosmo, Omega Supreme, and Skyfire for the Autobots. The Decepticons didn't really get ground vehicle forms until the show introduced the Constructicons; and later adding an all car team in the Stunticons, followed by Swindle, Onslaught, and Brawl from the Combaticons, them all being made from rebuilt WW2 military vehicles.
In reality: it was probably something to do with balancing out their portrayal in the show, seeing how the toys sold, and how much they could get away with given the technology and the concept materials at the time.
And Sideswipe.... The G1 Sideswipe character could canonically fly as well as he had a jet pack. Though initially that was planned to be Sunstreaker's ability by the bio writers (off of his engine block becoming a get pack for him) but their bio's were switched. In one episode Optimus even borrows Sideswipe's jetpack in one episode).
Don't blame Hot Rod, wasn't his fault.

Primus really likes to choose rebels as his chosen one. Hot Rod and Orion Pax had very similar personalities, and both were chosen to wield the matrix. This movie also changed kids movies due to the massive backlash of killing off Optimus Prime. Kids literally locked themselves in the closet crying, it was traumatizing
If you'd like to see more of Blurr's voice actor John Moschiita, look up Micro Machines commercials from the 80s. Yes he really does talk that fast. Wreck-Gar was voiced by Eric Idle from Monty Python. The music playing as the Junkions chase the Autobots was Weird Al's Dare to be Stupid. Check out the music video. It's silly fun and I love it. IDK if you buy toys or collectibles, but Hasbro Pulse (and other online stores) have many Transformers for sale. Why most Decepticons can fly? Answer is that in Cybertron, there are two classes which is Civil bots and Military bots. Military bots have the ability to fly wheras Civils does not. When the Cybertron war broke out, the Civils join the Autobots and Military personnels joins the Decepticons.

Coincidentally, should there be a sequel to Transformers One, they'd better have more Arcee... been hot for that bot since I was 9. Also, unlike other kids, the death of Optimus Prime didn't hit me as hard as it did others, but then I was an avid viewer of Robotech, which had quite a lot of named characters getting killed, so I was used to it.

The death of Optimus cause trauma to 80's kids and the Rise of Rodimus Prime while short could be a spinoff today if done right.
2 curse words were added to the movie to get a PG rating so parents would be forced to sit in the theater with their kids so they would see all the new characters and know which toys to buy

I really don't like seeing Optimus die in any incarnation. He's my #1 favorite Autobot/Transformer, but damn if he didn't have a really great final fight against Megatron. Also....The universal greeting is understood by most creatures in the galaxy. It can be roughly translated to "Hello, we mean you no harm," or "We come in peace," or "Do you hate dirtwad Decepticons as much as we do?"
It's a bit of a running joke by now isn't it, Optimus dying. He died at least twice in the original comic run too, one of which was for a REALLY dumb reason!

After Megatron cheated, Prime still won at the expense of sacrificing some NPCs in the VR, then declared himself unworthy of winning as he'd compromised his principles. In VR. After Megatron had obviously cheated. So he let himself be blown up, and therefore let Megatron win the macguffin which could have given the Decepticons unlimited energy, allowing them to steamroller all their enemies. It was... not his finest hour 🤨

So way back in the day Hasbro bought a line of robot toys that turned into vehicles, and a line of robot toys that turned into objects, handed the whole mess to Marvel Comics and said make a backstory. Most of the animated series have slightly different origin stories for the characters and even for the ultimate beings Primus and Unicron.
Megatron was one of a think 6 toys that turned into guns but he and Shockwave were the 2 that really made the jump.
This movie takes place between season 2 and season 3 of the cartoons, and was just an excuse to kill off a bunch of characters to bring out a bunch of new toys. Even with that the optimus prime VS megatron fight scene in this movie in my opinion will always be the ultimate Transformers fightscene.

When you say you should "watch the show" you're going to have to be more specific. Depending on how you count them, there are over 20 Transformers series at this point. A lot of them are in their own little bubble of continuity and aren't connected to each other. So you could start watching practically anywhere and not get lost.
Another classic 80s movie with a hard hitting soundtrack is THE WRAITH with Charlie Sheen and rest of cast before they were famous. And can't forget Stephen King CHRISTINE VA classic soundtrack music from 60s all the way to 80s and was the first movie to use Bad to the Bone in it

This movie was the best & worst thing Sunbow Studios did, & the reason for their demise. Backlash to so many character deaths, especially Optimus' was the reason Duke wasn't killed off in the GI Joe animated movie. If you can find it, there's a DVD/Blu ray anniversary edition version that has an easter egg documentary about the backlash. There were death threats. Rodimus Prime, who was supposed to take over from Optimus, never took with the audience, so Optimus was brought back, but the damage was done. You'll notice that in the current day movies & animation, if Optimus IS killed off, he's always brought back by the end to "set things right". Even to this day the powers that be won't take the risk of permanently getting rid of him. I never counted how many 'bots on both sides were killed off, but if I made a drinking game from it, I know I'd get plastered. I had 2 of the toys that were killed off in the film, you'll never know how pissed I was.
Fun fact: StarScream was also brought back, however the powers that be were never able to capitalize on his resurrection, since the gu8y who did his voice (& the original Cobra Commanders) died in real life not too long after.
Watch the Beast Wars series to get the gist on animal forms. It's a good show!
