      The Droid Army is indeed my favorite military in all of Star Wars. But this Snail Tank's design is somewhat deficient IMO.
      Those fixed forward facing cannons have a small firing arc. I don't see any rotating turrets in it, it's profile is very narrow, but tall, meaning it will may have difficulty with soft terrain.
      It likewise has a big side profile, so flanking shots on it will be very dangerous, as it is one big target. It's much more dependent on having its flanks protected than most other tanks.
      I like the design, but I feel it's deficient and focused too much on frontal assault.

    For turning, I always figured the outriggers could slightly lift the front of the body up a bit, so you still have the center-tread pushing at the rear, but the rest of it is maybe an inch or two above the ground so the outrigger treads can turn it more freely, before dropping it back down when they want a straight-line and maximum speed/traction.

      In star wars it practically seems to be the law of the universe just like the speed of light or gravity that whenever engineers are on the cusp of designing something that is actually practical, like a proper tank instead of yet another stupid walker, something will always compell them to gimp their design if doesn't quite satisfy the rule of cool.
      In this case, the force itself intervened somehow to make the seperatist engineers decide to forgo including a proper turret so that their heavily armed death snail has to turn its whole body just to aim its weapons at something like a ww2 Stug gun. But at least the rule of cool requirements imposed on the galaxy by the eldrtich gods of SW are satisfied, so that's okay. XD

      @Furzkampfbomber ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@7ElevenTruther Well, the StuG at least had two tracks, could turn on the spot and was generally quite nimble for a tank. Also, it had a low profile and was deadly as a tank killer. Nothing of those things is true for the death snail. It's not 'terrifying', the only thing that made it terrifying is the way how it's used - but the same thing can be said about a wrecking ball that was set on fire and then rolled through a kindergarten.
      And yes, I agree, many designs in Star Wars are silly or even utterly stupid. The one thing that is bugging me the most, apart from the AT-AT, is the Tie fighter. Hey, we have an actually at least decent design here, one that is powered by a fusion reaction that most likely can power this thing for years, so... maybe we should ad _solar panels_ to it, which will deliver absolutely zero energy under most operating conditions, not barely enough to illuminate at least the glove compartment when it does _and_ restricts the pilots view so much, he could just as well fly with a letterbox on his head. Honestly. Not every TH-cam has yo cover what is relevant. I know it's good for the algorithm. But it's a fresh breath to just watch whatever the creator most wants to post and care about. The in depth lore stuff just feels alot more interesting than another opinion or analysis on the current thing. (Side note: I have no problems with those vids and like and watch them. Just thought you may appreciate the feedback, if seen.)

    If it was made on the cheap to bully citizens and militias, then yeah I'd do what the CEO's decided and buy the cheap option over a full, expensive MBT.
    From an artistic perspective I love the design, as I do almost all the Clone Wars machines, but that being said the snail droid is a horribly designed war-fighting machine.
    It feels like the spiritual precursor to the TIE Mauler (though the Mauler manages to be even worse).

    This might be a question that's been asked before, but why do we never see the corvettes, frigates, capital ships, etc. of the Rebel Alliance actually firing? I was watching Rogue One again and I realized how the Alliance could have sent their fighters to take down the ISD I's and just bombarded the shield gate. I understand to a point that there is cinematic reasoning, but it's obvious that perhaps if the Alliance had time to fill 1 U-Wing with troops, did they not have more lying around? And Blue Squadron likely could have gotten more fighters to the ground if they had waited to lock S-Foils before entering the gate. I don't know, I feel like this is me rambling at this point, but I feel like we forget in the films that Alliance sort of does what the Empire does in Legends, send in fighters and let them take care of the rest.

    Ah yes. A "not very mobile, not agile, having difficulty with rough terrain tank".
    Not to sound overly critical, but the writing for this piece of junk is absurd in the extreme. If the best aspect of your "tank" is that it can ram things sometimes, and that somehow makes it terrifying, then it is a poorly designed tank.
    So lets break down the flaws of this thing. It has a very high silhouette, long profile, with mostly (gimble) fixed forward firing main guns regardless of configuration they only swivel up and down on a tank with otherwise poor turning ability, it's stupid for a droid vehicle, and it really prefers to ram things more than anything else.
    This is not an effective tank. This is not an effective anything. The fact that it can move over water with relative ease is just about the only interesting or cool thing about it when we consider all the weird design choices that make this an extremely inefficient design. If our primary concern is 'terrifying infantry' there are many more cost effective ways to do that.
    Sometimes I really wonder what the trade federation army would have looked like if the person who had designed the lucre hulk was in charge of general weapons development and aesthetics. By this I mean the art designer, because that person built up a whole reasonable lore around efficiency and multi-purpose designs. It is sort of weird seeing all the inefficient and poorly designed forces in the trade federation next to some very optimized and well thought out ones. Lucre hulks, droid tri-fighters, vultures, and the HMP droid gunship were all viable and versatile designs which seem to almost not fit with the goofy walkers, speeders, and tanks.

  • @uncabob214

    A truly absurd design. That track is so vulnerable. There's fantasy designs, and there's being so far from grounded engineering that you're entering orbit. The idea that these things were good in urban environs is a hilarious joke. Yeah sure, take a tank into the environment where it's most vulnerable to being sneak attacked by hostile infantry and then give it totally unprotected tracks. These things would have been slaughtered in urban fighting. At least put some armoured coverings over the track, please...but then how would you maintain the tracks? Hmmm. Looks like it's stupid all the way down.

  • @michaelramon2411
    @michaelramon2411 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It is a very distinctive design, but I think it would actually be pretty terrible in urban combat. Urban warfare is defined by flanking and verticality. A tank in those conditions is going to be taking shots from above, the sides, behind, and yet this thing can't turn well and has all of its weapons facing forward.
    It is probably decent at navigating rubble and extremely rough terrain, though, so maybe you're supposed to flatten the city with artillery first and then drive it in?

  • @BierBart12
    @BierBart12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The most terrifying part of this droid must be that it can slightly speed in school zones.
    I think the turning problem might be solved if the central tread was actually two treads that could freely move in opposing directions, which wouldn't usually be visible anyways

  • @void-creature
    @void-creature ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I still think this is some of the more poorly designed CIS armour,
    the unnecessarily high profile, exposed sensors, lack of mobility, lack of speed, completely front fixed weaponry and lack of AT capabilities really add up
    although only if you ignore that treads are inherently superior to legs, which StarWars tends to do

  • @bamboozlednoodle6513
    @bamboozlednoodle6513 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So as an actual tanker, tanks turn by diverting more power to the drive sprocket on the side you’re turning into, this makes that track rotate faster than the opposite one and basically pulls/pivots the tank in that direction
    There’s really no way the tank droid would be able to effectively turn irl

    I imagine this tank would look really really cool if the side treads were repulserlifts like a mox between a pod racer and tank, Personally I always loved the snail droid, and I prefer it to the ATT, I just in general like tanks that don't have a central gun, obviously it's great to have them on some designs, bit it makes the vehicle feel more advanced when it had a main cannon equivalent weapon that is a fraction the size of a normal main cannon

    • @felps_4500
      @felps_4500 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on the situation, and if it's really worth to do something like it, example, in the Yuuzhan Vong War (Legends), a heavly damaged SSD (Lusankya) was used to ram one of the Vong's World ships, it was a worthy sacrifice, because:
      1: The SSD was damaged beyond repair, the NR only took it's weapons away before the act;
      2: The World ships were the Vong's main source of power, so taking at least one out would cripple their forces for good, yes, they had more, but most of them were dieing on the inside thanks to diseases and sh*t, since most (if not all) of their tech was solely biological.
      TLDR: It's a big gamble, you either wins a lot or loses a lot, and even then, it's never guaranteed that you'll win every time

Those Hasbro toys are never super film accurate and include a ton of non-canon play features, I wouldn’t put any “canon” stock in that.

But its is slower compare to third generation MBTs (m1 Abrams, T-90, etc).
