  • A quick little video I put together to show some of the methods I use when repointing with NHL 3.5 and Wareham 4 mm sand. The first job is to remove a previous cement repoint without damaging the bricks.

    Great video 👍👍 do you know roughly how old this was? I believe this is the same red brick only property although I was going to be repointing in hotlime or lime putty based mortar have you used any of these before ?

    Hi mate cracking job, how do you clean off the lime dust from the brick face after raking out??

  • @peterwait641
    @peterwait641 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The air bricks are a bit low, water can be driven in by rain when the are ground level!

    • @mikec2867
      @mikec2867 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The air brick is for sub floor ventilation. as you will notice it's below DPC

    Hello i am an amateur and have just removed cement render off my gable wall and repointed the brickwork under neath with lime mortar. i am thinking about either lime washing the bricks now or painting with silicate paint. Any thoughts on the 2 options? Thank you

      Lime wash all the way safest option

    Finding quality lime in the states is hard to find and will cost a arm and a leg. You guys are lucky over there that lime is still being used.

      Most mixes are 1 part NHL 3.5 with 2.5 parts sharp sand. Takes about 30 mins to mix it properly - plenty of info if you google it.

      What a silly comment. You are not a young man Michael you want to take your "secrets" with you? You just come across as very petty . Sure you are good at what you do and have probably worked hard and made a lot of mistakes along the way. Most craftsmen are happy to share their knowledge with others that way the skills are passed on from generation to generation. You should be a freemason they like secrets and are generally a rum lot.

    • @michaeljamesdesign

      @@lina-zz9kk The freemasons were originally stonemasons who needed to keep their trade/craft to themselves because it was their living. Nobody could join the masons unless they were invited. These tradesmen needed to keep their knowledge undisclosed otherwise the other trades would start combining it into their repertoire of skills. It's still the same today. We don't give away our trade secrets otherwise they cease to become that. I have an apprentice who works hard to gain the knowledge. I also offer training days and I charge. You're welcome to apply.

    • @lina-zz9kk

      @@michaeljamesdesign They were the real freemasons the organisation around today was not created until the 18thc and todays rolled up trouser brigade mostly could not change a light bulb. Sadly both my grand fathers were members and not very pleasant characters. I am just a joe shmo who is trying to re point my gable wall myself so that i dont get stiffed by a hold up merchant. I admire your skills and know they are hard earned and my comments were sort of tongue in cheek.
      How much are your courses and where are they please ?

    • @michaeljamesdesign
      @michaeljamesdesign 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lina-zz9kk No I meant the level of secrecy and mystery surrounding repointing is similar today in the same way it was with the early freemasons. You'll get nothing out of traditional English tuckpointers and not very much out of anyone who's good at repointing brickwork using lime. We can't afford to give away our craft so that anyone can do it. Otherwise anyone can then do it. Rule number one is that you never give away your livelihood.
