    Hilarious, brilliant, tragic and pitiful. Does anyone else pick up on just how desperate David is at this stage of the series?
    Desperate and terrified.
    He is most likely not aware of his looming redundancy, but he seems terrified by being in the process of losing his status the most respected, admired, adored, funny person in the office to Neil. He never had those qualities or that status off course, but he convinced himself that he had it.
    His bragging about the Business People just screams desperation.
    Off course, this spiral culminates with the infamous dance, which, although hilarious, is also very sad.

    • @anunmercifulkiwi1803
      @anunmercifulkiwi1803 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The office is really a sad show. Brilliant beyond comprehension, but that season finally was more upsetting than any other show that's actually a drama. I wish more comedies had writing as good as this.

    • @ianjones3568
      @ianjones3568 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      David's desperation to people please and to massage his ego leads him to jump on the management training thinking it would improve his status in the office but just makes him more removed from it, and affects his performance even more. He sacrifices his job and potentially career for his ego. That is quite a risk to take.

    • @spinynorman1562

      Jennifer and Neil were probably already drawing up his redundancy package by episode 2 in series 2. The sad thing about series 2 is he genuinely doesn't see it coming.

  • @johno4521

    I don't think Neil is all nice, he's just very subtle at undermining Brent. Brent is the office manager after all; Neil is the area manager and he couldn't even have mentioned to him that he was coming in to organise the birthday celebration let alone include him in it...

    • @rindoubaka1574
      @rindoubaka1574 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Ok sure but that would suggest David isn't an egocentric narcissist. Neil would have no reason to undermine David if he acted like a professional rather than a petulant child like he does most of the time. Simple fact is, David is a tosspot. Neil knows this. Mind you Neil isn't completely in the right, yet by David's own boasting he runs a "layed out" work force. David undermines himself more than Neil undermines him.

    • @vorebiz
      @vorebiz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Neil and Chris Finch are intended to be the villains of the office. Gervais has said this in interview. Lee is a bit of a dull fellow and not the best partner in the world when it comes to Dawn, sure. But Chris is just gross, and Neil is written to be two-faced and scheming, and his mask only begins to slip in the final episode of the show.
      There is a strong undercurrent in series 2 that Neil has planted a negative perception of Brent and the Slough branch in The Swindon Lot off-screen, and that he and Jennifer actively wanted the get Brent out of his management position early on. Watch series 2 with this in mind and Brent becomes a far more sympathetic character. The entirety of series 2 leads up to the inevitable redundancy. He didn't have a chance.
