I remember this game back in the day for how it’s design seems more “trollish” than most Nintendo games were.
That’s probably why it’s so infamous, but wow. Some of that bonus content really just seems like they just pushed it out the door before they even finished polishing it lol.

My biggest issue with this game, is the stage that tricks you with a backwards warp, thus locking you out of world 9.

Shmoop, since you're finally starting the Famicom Disk System games, you're eventually going to play Family Computer Golf: Japan course. Nintendo of Japan held a contest for this game and handed out two harder versions of the game as prizes. Will you be playing those as well?
    Golf: Professional Prize Card
    Golf: Championship Prize Card

I am currently not including limited prize carts or event games, since those aren't really games that were "published" to the general public. That being said, I won't rule out the possibility of going back to play them once I catch up, so maybe someday.

Shmoopshybob: Look at my previous comment first, easy way to get 1-up, in this game the way to get fire work match the unit of coins with the unit of the timer when you hit the flag pole, odd number 3 fire work, even number 6 fire work, however while doing this if the 10 digit of the coin also match 1-up on the flag pole instead of score, and it also work with coin at 00.

Shmoopshybob: This version of the game the game cannot physically check if you enter a pipe name warp zone, and also cannot check if you enter a pipe. So how does it know that you entered warp zone in this version of the game, if one castle is not clear, and because of this, it become a serious flaw, and it make the reverse warp zone in world 3 that bring you back to world 1 a fake troll, since world 1-2 as the warp zone to world 3, and 8-1 warp zone to world 5, world 5-2 as the warp zone to world 8, and using a warp zone does not unclear a castle already clear, however returning to the title screen will unclear castle already clear. Only the Super nintendo version of the game can check if you enter a pipe name warp zone, however in both case you will not be disqualified from world 9 if you enter vine, or bonus room using a pipe. In 6-1 the hardest jump with the wind can be skip when the wind start there is a pipe that lead to underwater bonus only the start is pratice for B-2, and it exit pass the hardest part, doing this will not disqualify you from world 9 in both this version and the Super nintendo version. Also in World 8-3 the spring jump into bouncing into koopa there is a star before that and people think the star is a troll since you have to bounce on koopa however the koopa are the troll you can make it across without the koopa with the power stars, even mario can do it without the koopa but he must be near the right edge of the spring with still full momentum. B-3 is easier on this version of the game since they are still green spring, in the Super nintendo all-stars version of B-3 the green spring are replace with red spring forceing you to do complicated jump, also in the Super Nintendo All-stars version world A through D easier to unlock just have to finish 8-4 one time, however World A through D are harder in the All-stars version, Koopa move faster, goomba are replace with buzzy beatle and move faster, Hammer bros. chase after you as soon as they spond, no mid-way check points, and Bowser throws hammer and no fire, and D-4 the version above fake Bowser brother, and Fake bowser, but the game still end with peach, in the All-stars version real Bowser brother and Real Bowser in D-4.

Difficultly aside, it's also important to take the context of the era into account. The NES was still just taking off in the west when SMB2 was released as a FDS launch title in Japan, so Nintendo wanted to hold off on releasing the sequel, since the original was still selling like hotcakes. By the time 1988 was rolling around and it'd be the ideal time to drop the sequel, it looked outdated and too similar to the original along with being too hard. Honestly it was the best result, since Doki Doki Panic was a really good game that looked great , and if they didn't re-skin it, would have been stuck as a weird FDS oddity that never saw the light of day again.

I played this game for the game boy color. The best I could reach as a 5 year old was 8-3 and more with the screen crunch it was horrible

It would be great to own a original version of this game, but considering how it was Japanese only AND for a add-on i don’t think it would be easy.
