Years ago I used work as a metalworker doing structure building and small part welding for containerships. After being out of that work for about 10years I started to work for a transport company which hauls scrapmetal around. There used to be a mechanic with a little bit of experience in metalworking working on all the containers and trailers when the are damaged but he wasn't a good welder so I took that side of his hands. Never thought I could lose my experience with welding but it was a struggle to remember al the ways to weld on certain surfaces and positions. Thanks to your videos I got back a lot of experience and found back the right feeling on how to handle materials, situations like rusty surfaces and how to weld in all positions I get to work with. You are a great instructor and thank you for all the information and help through your videos!

I am IWS working as a welding supervisor and i am prety happy when i see some one to get things DONE. Perfectly executed, correct oscilations and good welding. Only two things. 1) I would of weld the root from bottom to top 2) Grinding each pass is more than necessary and it will make the final welding to be more flat. ( But i am sure you just show how to weld each pass and you didnt done it to save some time) Overal, this is HOW ITS DONE! Good video without any misdirections and misguidance.

Awesome! I just recently took and passed my 3g cert test. Biggest part was having the inspector right next to you watching and critiquing you! Lol is a good guy though. AWS 3g certified! Making arcs causing sparks!
Been welding on and off at my last job, mostly when the welders go on vacation. Never done a weld test, but feeling like I may do alright having watched a dozen of your videos.
Thanks for helping this farmer improve his welding skill. I have no formal training but able to do weld repairs with out failures regularly. I do practice welds and cut the piece in half just like you show in this video to learn proper penetration, no porosity or undercut then try to break it with a sledge hammer to test.
HAY Rick, Watching your video on welding a 3/8 test plate, open root. The 1st thing I thought that you were going to do is welding your root pass vertical up because in the beginning it said 3g and I thought this should be real interesting. But after I saw the root opening I new, no way, he's running it downhill. Just a pointer to you, YOU could of run the hot pass downhill to prevent "suckback " just to be on the safe side, it can happen with mig welding, even on pipe welding with mig. By running the hot pass downhill you'll have a much better chance of not getting suckback. You'll be reinforcing the root pass and it will be alot easier to put it in than welding it uphill. Just a thought for you, but you did a really good job and the cap pass, everything being in uniform.
Short circuiting process....... up hill..... wow !! Looks great !!! I’ve Pulse sprayed up hill but never tried in the short circuiting process..... Running a lot of Wire feed currently Ive gotta try this..... great work !!!!

When I took my 3G mig test we were in no way allowed to run downhill. Also no power tools allowed. No grinder, just a hand wire brush, and welpers. Just what the employer required for their test. Would love to see a video of an open root ran uphill. Not hating on this video, very helpful for the new guys in this business.

When an apprentice I was told when vertical up passes either with MIG you call it GMAW or stick on the filler passes to get a tune like a Viennese waltz in your head or counting 1,2,3 pause and off again always kept me in check for a uniform pass
I use a cheap metronome off Ebay that clips to the side of my welding helmet. Get it going at the rate you need depending on settings and use it to keep your rhythm. Gotta stop the mind wandering off.

Question: I had worked at a fabricating shop in the Parts and Tools Room. I had expressed a desire to become a welder. The purchasing agent, to whom I had made the comment, said that if I want to drive at night in my old age (I was in my mid 50's at the time) I should perish the thought of welding. I did some welding back in the 1970's when I was attached to the Public Works department on a Coast Guard base and enjoyed welding and working with metal. Now that I'm in my 60's I still have a desire to weld but the PA's words still ring in my head. Does welding affect one's night vision?
I'm currently working on a piping job in the shop. the boss decided.030 bare wire. im running 21 volts and 410 on the wire feed. I can't quite make 90° of it welded do to gravity. I'm using a miller cp-302 with the feeder on top.
Great video!! Question: I have a test at school, same process same position but on the (open root pass) I have to go uphill. I've been practicing on it for a while now but I just can't get it done. Either it's not penetrating or there's to much material passing on the back side. Could you please upload a video to show me how to do it?

I'm trying my darndest to weld as good as you with my everlast mig welder. I'm making some progress but I don't think I'm ever going to able to match your skill.
Get a clean sheet of paper draw two lines from bottom to top about 3/8"or 1/2" apart, then take a pencil & practice your weaving, you'll see where you messed up, do this for 1 hour every day until you get it right, this will help you a lot believe me that's how I got really good. I welded for 21 years but got in a bad accident last year & now I will never be able to weld again, be careful how you work & be mindful of people who work around you, I got nailed from someone else been negligent didn't even see it coming, when your helmet is down you don't know what's coming your way.
Robert if you re telling his weld is good, you arent believing in yourself.. just side to side then up starting from the bottom of the plate in vertical..Keep practicing on that., then do over head as if you were using a stick going circle foward.. then right me back and show him your progress
Could you tell us what machine you are using? I heard the cooling fan cut back just after you finished the weld. I'm thinking it's a miller or esab. I believe the HTP has that cut back also.
Last year I took a basic stick welding class at school. I got pretty good at 7018 but a few weeks ago I bought a Hobart stickmate 235 and started out with 6013 and 6011. Just needed a little refresher. Bought some Hobart 7018’s a couple days ago and I’ve tried everything and I have to beat the daylights out of the slag for it to come off and then it turns into powder. Ive turned the amps up, turned it down, tried more and less drag angle. Nothing works. Any suggestions? There’s no way it can be my technique because at school I was getting some beautiful slag peel. Just very frustrated. I’ve followed every 7018 instructional video I can find. Any help would be soooo appreciated!
In 1973 Jerry Lee Lewis had a song "I'm going down, I'm going up" down up up down any way you want".. That's how GMAW 3G has morphed today. This must be an AWS test, or does ASME also allow vertical down on the root pass now? As always, great video Jody!

Funny thing is I'm pretty sure MIG is the process he is the least competent in, you should see the guy with a TIG torch in his hand.

When I was welding I always do my own ticka ticka in my head. Sometimes I was allowed to listen to headphones and I went to the beat.

Let's see a Canadian test! 2GF spray arc. (Flat single bevel groove (3/8" plate, 1/2" gap, 30° bevel, with a 1/4" backing plate)

Reminds me of the sheet metal tests I did about 25 years ago.
Only one pass, overhead, the back side needed to be even.

I think it could be either Aws or asme but short circuit mig requires qualifying the procedure.
