Bill Hader: "I remember getting in the elevator for my audition and there was a guy next to me who had a backpack full of props and wigs and things, and I went, ‘Oh my god, that guy is so prepared, I have nothing, I have no props.’ And that was Andy Samberg. And Andy Samberg said he was looking at me going, ‘Oh, that guy has no props. He doesn’t need props.’ And that was the first time we met, was in that elevator."
what a story! i like it
spaceye just watched that interview a couple of days ago lol. It's funny to hear that Bill was a bit of a nervous wreck for the first 4 seasons on SNL.
spaceye
Samberg and Hader will forever be one of the best duos on SNL.
What a great anecdote to show that there's never a one-size-fits-all way of doing things.
pete davidson wearing a spiderman shirt to his audition is my everything
HJAJWJ IKR AND THE WAY HE WAS STANDING IS POSTURE IS SO FUNNY
It’s so on brand for him
😕
Why is that?
His line was the best one in the video - 20 year olds have sex is like Green Day... one minute and 52 seconds of the same thing every time... lol
WE DEMAND THE RELEASE OF KATE MCKINNON’S AUDITION TAPE.

I get that Seth Meyers is doing Hugh Grant, but he is actually NAILING Eddie Redmayne about a decade before he even showed up!
R S that WASNT hugh grant???
Omg it sounded exactly like him 😂
R S my thoughts exactly
i literally thought he was eddie redmayne at first lol
@@TheBETZINATOR omg i watched this at least twice before i realised it wasn't eddie redmayne!
Such respect for Kristin Wiig for going and doing Target Lady during her audition because it literally looked insane
Is that what she was doing? All I knew was it was as unfunny as she always was on the show.
@@tejaswoman Then you have zero concept of comedy or humor in general. Kristen is the only cast member in 40+ years to get the job after one audition, so it's safe to say you have no clue what you're on about.
@@stevencocky19 I'm sure it's just a 'bait' comment.
I was so happy when she did Target Lady. She didn’t even know that it would turn into a real skit!
target lady is goals
the moral story of this video is, failed in audition doesnt mean fail in future career. just look at Stephen Colbert, Jim Carrey, Zach Galifianakis, and Kevin Hart.
And Colbert is rocking Late Night.
Thank god Colbert didn't make it otherwise we would never have gotten the Colbert Report
Muarif Sumahar Zach Galifianakis looks sooo young
...Colbert did make it. He was a writer
Ikr..makes ME feel good about not winning a singing competition....
Every single time Pete Davidson appears on camera, he looks like he's nervously auditioning.
while not being funny.
I think he's a lot more confident now. This was only his second season
@@linnycrocus6023 still not funny.
i quite like pete's personality, seems like a likeable guy but that dude was so fucking lucky to get that spot on SNL...

Hiring Kate McKinnon was one of the best decisions that Lorne has ever done
Right! To think that she started only impersonating a somewhat not so popular Penelope Cruz ( phenomenaly) but who knew she had so much range with all these new impersonations
Ok Kate's mother - Calm down now.
@@BedwetterCDN shut up incel. You sound so insecure

There's probably an alternate universe where one of SNL's best characters is Nuclear Elvis
I had been grinning as I watched those. But when Nuclear Elvis appeared, I actually guffawed. It was just so so unexpected.
Can't get over how muscular Andy Samberg's legs were lmao
I know, nice legs 😍
and still are
Frida Pena You call that muscles?
Frida Pena method actor.
Seriously that’s not even that big
Can't believe Andy Samberg used his body to get cast 😂😂
I saw an SNL audition tape of a guy named Joe Hursley he started the audition wearing all his characters outfits layered on top of each other and he’d strip them off when he switched characters. By the end of his audition he was dancing in just his briefs.
So not a fan. Dana Carvey too ugh
Kate McKinnon's audition as Penelope Cruz was so awesome, it ended up being her first live skit on SNL alongside Sofia Vergara
That was her first skit!?
@@sparshitasahu2539 Yes, and she was perfect
They need to release like a dvd collection of every audition.
Or just upload it on TH-cam
Oh yeah!
what the fuck is a dvd?

I bet Andy was hired for his legs!
Seth's Hugh Grant impression 😂
They look so alike sometimes, their expressions are similar too
because he looks just like him... lol
Right? His was one of a tiny handful where I wasn't sure which person was auditioning, having disappeared so completely out of the character. Will Ferrell was another one, the one where he has a wig and glasses.
but his hair ... so 90s
"Hi! Uhm... I'm not sure- I'm Amy Poehler" 🥺
Aww baby poehler bear
When Kate McKinnon said the word "moisturizer"...... perfect
How on Earth does Jim Carrey not get cast after nuclear Elvis 💀💀💀💀
Eric Lites jim is very individualistic and independent... it would have been really hard for them to handle... probably impossible to handle him... he is... some how... larger than the show itself
They had one opening at the time and they gave the SNL part to Will Ferrel
show stealer, Jim is Jim
No, He auditioned during Season 6. That would've been post In Living Color
!Ali Shahbaz In Living Color handled him just fine, so SNL would've managed. Besides, it isn't like SNL hasn't had larger than life cast members before (John Belushi, Eddie Murphy, Chris Farley, Will Ferrell, etc.).
This goes to show that SNL is great, but if you've really got that special something, you'll end up at the top anyway.
+IWriteSinsNotEssaysOK Very true statement!!!
IWriteSinsNotEssaysOK yes!
Phil's edited intros to every segment was a dagger to my heart.
@DinnerBells, yes, it still makes me sad!😩😢

That hushed "Aww" when Gilda said "Thank you! Bye!" at the very end of this was so touching.
I’m miss Gilda Radner 💔.
Damn ovarian cancer 🤬
Post-nuclear Elvis hahahahahaha I lost it!!
Best part xD
How the fuck did they NOT hire him after that audition?
Steven C it's so weird, because that was a killer clip. Guess Lorne Michaels was asleep for that audition. 😁
He is on another level of comedy.
i feel so bad for laughing but it just caught me off guard lmaoo
Kate McKinnon's audition looked so funny
Blue Palmer And hot
Dana Carvey's "Chopping Broccoli" song is always hilarious!!!
Think of some of the unfunny guys that DID get SNL....
And they passed on Jim Carrey.
He'd a been getting prime movie scripts in 2 weeks for inevitable movie career. Too big a star on too big a showcase like Eddie Murphy, even Chevy only lasted a year before getting cherry-picked.
@@peterwieser4631 I don't think people get that SNL is an entry level job, the showbusiness equivalent of flipping burgers. It doesn't matter how funny or talented you are if they don't think you're a good fit for what is a horrendously demanding and cut-throat job.
@@johnbull1568 Sarah Silverman, Chris Rock, Julie Louis Dreyfus and Larry David would agree with you.lol.
@@peterwieser4631 Julia was deeply unfunny on SNL. Sarah Silverman didn't last long enough to prove herself. Larry was fired because he hated work with too many people - even on "Seinfeld" he announced that he was going to quit every season.
Chris was indeed underused but he was member of a very solid cast.
@@johnbull1568 Yes, but it was also a seal of quality in the 90's and early 2000s. It was a rough job but it wasn't a dead end job by any means - any player, crew member, writer, director, musician had some guaranteed work if he said he worked on SNL.
has every comedian in Hollywood auditioned for SNL once?
maybe, after all it's SNL
Yes. It´s every comedian´s dream
SNL is to comedians, what Google is to programmers.
Sooo many amazingly big actors were discovered on SNL
Lyanno99 o
In retrospect, it seems unbelievable that Jim Carrey didn't get hired, but it was probably for the best. He was amazing on In Living Color and his style was probably more suited for that show. In the long run, it was probably the best for his career as well. If he'd been hired for SNL, he probably would've been so popular that they might've convinced him to stay for like ten years, in which case, he may not have been able to start his phenomenal film career when he did.
Plus SNL was too crowded with huge talent at the time and he might have drown there while in living colrs he was with very few people, seriously not more than 10 people at the same time and got more room
He was just for in living color.
Scary thought, omg.
Exactly while SNL is amazing for the greatest height of comedic career you can't do anything else once you get out. Most people have either done shows or movies that dudually didn't get much show light ( except Andy samberg, Bill hader and all the other late night hosts like Seth, Fallon and others) meanwhile Arminsen's portlandia wasn't known and Wiig usually did comedic movies like bridesmaid, Ghostbusters and others. So you can't really go into other genre.
I almost choked on my spit after seeing Jim Carrey's "post-nuclear Elvis" impression. That was brutal and hilarious.
Every time I watch this seeing Andy stops my heart. What a sweet soul

I like how nervous how some of them seem. Amy Poehler's gets me. It's amazing when you consider how confident she was on the show and has been since, but then you see them where they started, and they were terrified beings like the rest of us.
you'd be amazed at how shy so many performers are. their job is to entertain, but even they get nervous and have stage fright. I was involved in theatre growing up and when I'd have to do a presentation I'd always tell the class that I'm nervous and please be easy on me. my English teacher asked me how can I be nervous if I'm so involved with theatre. I told her it's because on stage I am someone else. it's not me up there, it's my character( and mind you, I was always cast as the most outlandish part). she told me to just pretend that I was in a play and that my character has to make a class presentation. boom. my mindset completely changed. my point is even pros get nervous.
Post-nuclear Elvis? Say what you want about Jim Carrey, but that is HILARIOUS.
sad he never got on
0:45 i never even grew up watching snl (not from the usa), but damn, that mini supercut of each of them saying their names made me feel all the feels.
3:05 the broccoli song HAHA
that Jim Carrey audition was hilarious
I love Jim Carrey but I thought his Elvis bit was very corny to the point of it being unfunny. Will Ferrell, now his audition was genius.
He was great In Living Color - the black version of snl
Emani Burton SNL wishes it was In Living Color
In Living Color is the funny version of SNL.
nassauE snl during in living color's run was great.
Jimmy Fallon looks so skinny

@@KuueenKumi nah I think he looks great!! Just not as skinny was when he was probably struggling comedian and had a college metabolism! Cuz yeah he slightly resembles a recently-sharpened pencil.
It's because he hadn't started drinking like a fish yet.
Is no one gonna mention Chris Parnell's Tom Brokaw voice at 2:00? I'm not entirely sure if it's accurate, but that voice just cracks me up every time.
It’s accurate!
I literally cried when I saw Phil Hartman, Gilda Radner and John Belushi - so sad they're gone now :(
💔
How did they not hire Jim Carey? He was made for sketch comedy
Good thing In Living Color snatched him
Too talented. LOL.
just goes to show you how bad SNL have gotten ...
SNL probably thought he was too slapstick. He was always destined to have a career though, where he got on tv or not.
***** No, Lorne was in charge when Carrey auditioned, but he wasn't physically present for it. Those that were, Al Franken in particular, told Lorne that he wasn't right and the rest is history.
That Gilda Radner ending was heartwarming and sad when she said goodbye :,)
she was incredible ❤
The Gilda part almost made me cry. She was such a legend.
She seemed so sweet
Omg Gilda Radner looks like the most adorable girl I have ever seen
so incredibly cute
she has the sweetest face of any person i've ever seen and if she were still here i'm sure she'd be like the sweet snl grandma
They really should do a playlist of these. It would be so interesting and fun to watch, especially some of the older ones
Bill Hader is a genius
What did he say before he said always? I could never make it out.

Omg Seinfeld ,Clinton and Denzel W. impersonation were amazing
"I'm Penelope Cruz" - Kate McKinnon. And I died!!!
"Join us again on Living, when we make ice from water." HAHAHAHA
kate's penelope cruz kills me every time
Phil Hartman's audition is incredible. It's like he stepped off another planet. He came in fully formed and confident, there was no way he wasn't going to not only get hired, but become the legend he is today. It's a great touch that the segues in this to impressions and characters are preceded by clips from Phil's tape.
Dana and Will as well. Just supreme talent and energy.
That Denzel impression is unreal!!

Unfunny? No. But No one does Corny better than Jim Carey and Will Ferrel. thats what makes them funny.
chopping broccoli will always be the best audition ever
yeah, but his brother Brad was the real genius of the family(my neighbors). Brad Carvey invented the wire wrapped toaster- the first CGI.
chopping broccoli still impresses me more, lol.
actually Fallon's audition is really good, he does lot of impressions, I was surprised at Robert Smith from The Cure, it was so good
Eh, not my cuppa. We all have our faves.

i grew up watching snl gilda, chevy, eddie, john, bill...do not make them like they use too.
I absolutely adore this video. It's comedic history. I wish they showed Eddie Murphy's audition. That's must've been gold. And the way this montage ended - with Gilda Radner being so adorable and full of life - puts tears in my eyes. So many of these cast members died early. But they are comedic legends, thank you SNL for discovering the people who want to make the world laugh.
I love and agree with everything in your post. I almost cried too.
This clip really gives an insight about how freaking DIFFICULT is making people laugh. I'm just melting down seeing Gilda Radner

The waiter revolted by food? Not his best sketch. Probably why he didn't make it.
Armisen's Ferecito character was so great! So forward thinking and clever...
I'M JUST KEEEE-DING!
Oh my god. I had no idea so many sketches came from their own original characters. True talent.
That Denzel Washington impression @ 1:26 was WAY too good!
Anyone else notice that Colbert was using his "Waiters Nauseated by Food" sketch (which would eventually air on "The Dana Carvey Show) during his audition?
Yeah and because of that he was hired by the Daily Show :D

Seth's audition killed me. ESPECIALLY WITH THAT ENGLISH ACCENT AMIRITE
+Christine Magill He was doing Hugh Grant.
They said no to Steven Colbert? 🤔
***** That's true! I'd forgotten about that.
he was hired as a writer briefly
they said no to Jorma Taccone, he was hired later as a writer because of Andy Samberg and The Lonely Island thing
Norm Macdonald talks about this audition on his podcast. He was sitting in on it with Lorne, and apparently he lobbied hard for Colbert, but they ended up picking Tracy Morgan over him.
Martin Allen
Well, I imagine it must've been a tough decision then
Omg, Gilda Radner was totally adorable!
My son and I occasionally sing the "chopping broccoli" song. It's just so funny -- and it's weird that we know all the words lol. Dana Carvey is a genius. Watching these auditions also made me so sad to see the late, great Phil Hartman; who left this earth way too soon. I still miss him.
Whaaaat!? They could have had Colbert???? And Carrey? This shows that sometimes it is good not to get all jobs you want.
Some SNL fans call Carrey 'the one who got away.'
Gilda was adorable and so pure. 😍 Oh, and Dana "choppin' broccoleeeee!"
Ahhh, there have been many we've each liked but not one have we ever loved more than sweet, sunny Gilda.
I think people forget how talented Dana Carvey was. His audition was amazing.

Zach Galasdksfkis used shaved and weight loss. Female is confused.
It's pretty weird that they didn't hire Jim Carey, I can't really think of a bigger raw talent in comedy other than Eddie Murphy and even that's debatable.
Because he would always steal the show in every skit
Jkkkkkkk
Ivani Gomcalves What?
Well, Lorne LOVES improvisation, and probably saw Jim as a frequent improviser.
Guy Incognito Lorne was not working on the show when Jim auditioned, which was 1980. That may be why he didn’t make it in. Also, had Jim made it, he would’ve been in the same cast as Eddie Murphy, so it might’ve made that era more balanced, honestly.
Wow! Watching all that is so sweet
Jim Carreys post nuclear Elvis, always delivers!🤣🤣
