It actually kind of makes sense that they aren't supposed to laugh during auditions - I think seeing how well a comedian can cope with nobody responding at all is a really good idea. Because some people get thrown off when nobody is laughing at all for so long, so seeing how well someone can keep going with NO audience response seems like it'd be a good way to see how well someone could cope with live tv.
The actual reason they do not laugh is because Michaels records auditions for further study. He may be undecided at the time of the audition, so they are taped to have hom view them again. The silence is because Lorne wants a clean recording for evaluation. [This information came from Ana Gasteyer in an interview years ago]
Andy Samberg mentions in an old interview with stern that when he got booked for a second audition, he was told to he could just redo the material from the first. But about a day or two before the audition he got a heads-up to do something original. He wasn't sure if he just got bad advice first or if it was intentional to see how quick he could come up with something good under pressure.
He's a prince among men, which makes sense, because PBS and Dr. Gates traced his ancestry. Turns out, he's a direct 40 or somethingth great grandson of Emperor Charlemagne and more recent descendant of multiple early English kings.
Kate McKinnon and Bill Hader are absolute stars of comedy, currently. I can’t wait to see when Kate branches out from SNL, more than she already has and is a mainstay with her own show or movies.
I've rarely seen anyone as talented as Kate on SNL since the 1st days of the program. Most recently her Rudy Giuliani (how did she do those eyes), then, her Jeff Sessions, and Ruth Bader Ginsberg.
Her Jeff Sessions is amazing. He's really very "pretty" and little, so that's helpful, but my mouth would hurt trying to do what she does during her Sessions imitation.
After hearing Bill talk about anxiety, and connecting that to his feeling of relaxation when he got a laugh from Tina,, tracks pretty well with his support later for a comic that looked like he once felt.
@Johnny Boy ...They do. It’s a tv show, fer cryin out loud! We might be allowed to see it, about twenty years from now! Some of the original (1975) cast auditions have been released, so, give it time!

SNL has produced so much talent for decades! I would have been too nervous if the cast of SNL walked in on my show. I'm not a comedian but I'm a front man musician and I would still be nervous if they came to my show. It would be like Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, and Steve Howe showing up
