    This is so similar when in 1983/4 when windsurfing for the masses exploded with foot straps. Then in the next five years they added fully retractable dagger boards, sliding mast tracks and differing hull shapes. The sails went from baggy and triangular to fully battened and high aspect ratio (and bloody expensive).
    In 1984, as single man with no commitments, I bought and sold 4 different boards searching for nirvana and following cheque book fashion. I now find myself listening to a very similar description of an up and coming sport changing faster than my wallet....
    I’ll dip a toe in when I’m 65... Damn am I really that old 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓

      Never too old Phil. Agree with you and hope it doesn't go that way. This video wasn't meant to make it sound like it ether, but the brands will always come up with gear to try and have an edge over another which sometimes will drive the price up.
      One thing that we see happen which will be very different to the windsurfing days is ...China!
      We know quite a few cheaper price point brands already going to bring prices of the wings down in the future. They may never be as competitive in performance but that cheaper price point for the whole set up is coming to the industry. This may keep the price down in someway.
      So watch this space. And also I feel it doesn't have to be as technical as windsurfing either but I might change my mind in the future if I get on some epic New GEAR :-) lol.
      Thanks for comment, let's see what happens. Reuben

      Haha! This brings back memories. I got my first windsurfer-an O'Brien board (still have it!) in I think, '87. Also bought a 'short board' - 9' O'Brien in March of '88 (still have it!). Until recently, I thought nobody windsurfs anymore. I recently started taking kitesurfing lessons and now am looking into winging. Thanks for stirring up the memory pot - a lot floated to the top!

    Should pay the bills as a job too for me, a few of them anyway. Tough here. Its a nice warm holiday spot too. Skiing in through switser is a good road trip, like bond, with the laser tag guns to the awaiting transport. Good tourism model. Need to save up enough for a pallet of old lambic strawberry ale, and some great nursery stock.

    Just tried the Wasp 6m. Seems like it flutters in neutral. Want to try the S25, and the Armstrong 5.5. I am new but I think I prefer the Y handles. To get the kite wing in the right wind angle, just allows for more trimming handling options. Excellent advice and video.

    Hallo,
    I'm almost 61, nevertheless each time I see some video of wingfoiling I get that feeling of wanting to go out and try it.
    I live close to a lake where I can do it.
    I have only experience with watersports as SUP, kayak and Catamaran sailing. No skateboard, snowboarding or any foil experience at all.
    As I live in Belgium winter is almost here. With that this is a time that people sell boards, foils and wings as they want to progress in smaller and better gear next year.
    There is no store anywhere close to my location, no place to rent or try out some gear. Best, and probably only way, to start is buying my own gear and go out learning with try and error till I get it.
    I now have the opportunity to buy some good 2e hand gear. Not much to find here either.
    But what to buy ? I want to buy something I can start with as a newbie but can keep for longer without having to sell, with loss, and buy new.
    I already bought a wing, Cabrinha X2 6m and a foil, Shinn 82cm mast, 1950cm² front wing.
    Now I have to decide on a board. I've the choice between a Starboard X wing 145 or a Fanatic Sky 110
    So one has more volume, the other a 20cm shorter and relative significantly lighter.
    What to take ? I'm 175cm tall a d about 82Kg (in shorts !)
    Oh yes, so for lake conditions.
    More volume, more buoyancy, more stability, more drag, more sticky on the water, ... needs more speed to lift on foil ?
    Less volume, takes longer to learn, less water contact surface, faster lift ... ?
    So ... 145 or 11o Liter board ?
    (I tried 2x on my SUP but that I won't do anymore as I got downwind way to fast and to far, plus only a short part of walk of shame is possible walking in the water (not on shore) as other part is deeper than standing depth)

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Neo, Glad to hear you are just about to get into winging. You have already got yourself a good wing and foil setup. When it comes to the board its a hard choice. The Starboard X wing is more setup for windsurf foiling as well. It will be quite long and have more weight because of this. But you will find this board very stable and easy when you start but I feel you will grow out of it very quickly.
      The Fanatic is a board you will end up keeping for a much longer time BUT you will definitely find it harder to stand on when you start. A Sky at 125L would be ideal. So it all comes down to how much harder you don't mind going at the start of your wing foiling journey. If you were happy to take your time and start of in light winds and maybe have a slower learning curve at the beginning then you could go for the Sky 110. Getting used to just standing on a smaller board will be the biggest challenge. Once you start to fly on your foil the Fanatic will be fine. Hope that helps Thanks Reuben

      Yeeeee, progress. Today first time I got the board off the water (3 times), for only 2-3sec, before crash boom bang.
      At least now I know I can do it, know where I need to put the mast in the rails and where to put my feet to engagé liftoff. Next keeping my balance, shifting my weight, to really go on foil and guide.

    I was heavily into windsurfing, had thousands of dollars in equipment. Then kite surfing came around and I switched to beach catamarans. These wing foiling setups look fairly..relatively inexpensive. I did say they "look" inexpensive. Are they? How many boards and wings do you need to cover common sailing conditions?

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Mister. I know there's a lot of people getting into this sport now. And some are buying a lot of gear too.
      But unlike windsurfing you don't need loads of sails and boards.
      We are lucky to have loads of gear to use here at SUPboarder. But that doesn't mean I use it all...
      I use 1 x 5m wing and 1x95L board with a 1800cm foil for most of my conditions. Surf and flatwater. If the wind gets up or the swell gets bigger I will change the front foil for a smaller one, but that's it really. I wing in 10-25knts with that setup.
      If you want to have a really good range 2 wings a 4m and a 6m is a great combination. This will have you covered for most wing conditions. Hope that helps, Thanks Reuben

    Awesome video thanks. Any thoughts on the Gong equipment? I'm looking to mainly to ride waves and live on the coast near Brighton. But there aren't any reviews of the Gong Plus. There are a few on the Pulse which say it's good but heavy.

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gong don't like giving out gear for review so thats why there isn't any reviews 😉. I have heard good and bad stuff about their gear. I have used a few Gong boards in the past and one foil. All seam well made and work well. I do hear mixed messages regarding customer service and board lifespan. But again some people say it's all fine and some people have had issues. The main problem is if you have an issue with the product you can't just go to the shop to get it sorted out. But they do seem to have a good range of products that will suit most riders. I hope that helps a little bit? thanks Reuben

    • @SUPboardermag
      @SUPboardermag  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. Not so much, the only issue could be with shorter riders using big wings when not on the foil. Because the wings may be dragging at the wing tips in the water more. When on the foil this shouldn't be a problem. Any help? Reuben

      When you are moving and being powered by the wind, the board will feel more stable. But when you are standing still, it will be the same as if you were paddling, maybe slightly harder as you don't have a paddle to brace in the water. Hope this helps. Beau

      Hey Rudy. We made the video because of all the question we were getting from our SUPboarder readers about how to get into the wing side of the sport. Most are still using their same foils and boards as they paddleboard with in the surf. So it has some cross over. Hope that makes sense? We don't do that much wing stuff but still yes it link to some SUP gear. Don't worry I'm not turning into a full time winger. Thanks Reuben
