How to Make a Raspberry Pi Smart Bartender

  • In this video, we use a Raspberry Pi 3 (you could also use a Raspberry Pi Zero) to make a smart Bartender! The bartender that can make drinks by mixing up to 6 ingredients together at the same time, so you can have anything from a rum and coke to a long island iced tea. It can be customized to make any number of drinks, can be expanded to mix more ingredients, and also has the potential for connectivity with Alexa and Google Home / Google Assistant.
    The drinks can be configured on the bartender with two simple buttons and a screen, and you can add any number of drinks to the bartender's repository through the bartender's code.
    Please drink responsibly.

    A NOTE ON CLEANING:
    After you use the bartender, you'll want to flush out the pump tubes in order to avoid bacteria growth. There is an easy way to do this in the configuration menu. Hook all the tubes up to a water source, then navigate to configure-clean on the bartender screen and press the select button. All pumps will turn on to flush the existing liquid from the tubes. I take the tubes out of the water source halfway through to pump some air through the tubes and remove all water from the pumps. Note: make sure you have a glass under the funnel to catch the flushed out liquid.
    Sanitation recommendations per FDA is 1 Tbsp bleach in 1 gallon water with a contact time of 2 minutes, then rinse thoroughly for the same time (recommended weekly).

    Bartender 2.0:
    Marry it to a fridge to keep the drinks cool.
    Add a IR beam sensor to confirm a cup or glass has been loaded before drinks are delivered.
    Warning system for pumps running dry (out of liquid)?

    • @omgitsjulian
      @omgitsjulian 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      I would argue that these drinks should be going into a shaker then either stirred or shaken to chill and dilute. The fridge idea, while good; is missing the mark a bit. The margarita mix (to me) is a good indicator that the emphasis is on the project and not the quality of cocktail.

    • @rupertdewilde705
      @rupertdewilde705 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      The kind that likes their G&T ice cold even if they forgot to get or make ice.
      Naturally wouldn't put things inside the refrigerated part that don't belong (brandy, whisky, etc). Unless you mean refridgerating the whole thing, in which case, I agree bad idea, and the Raspberry Pi may not enjoy being iced.

      @jrauck 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Just because they used margarita mix doesnt mean you couldn't use tequila, sours, simple syrup, ect. You would just need more pumps. The whole point of this was the concept, or otherwise they wouldn't have made it so easy to edit

    • @BryceDearden
      @BryceDearden 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Maybe also add in a function to prime the pumps? Just add a menu item and then hold down the select button and it's spins them all so you can make sure everything is ready to pump and that it's the current liquid

    Anytime you make a liquid dispensing machine it's good practice to NOT put all the electronics and power supply under the dispenser.

    Bartender 2.0:

    bartender 3.0
    add one proximity/weight sensor to check if there is a glass
    add a touch screen to make it easy to select a drink and configure and make new beverages
    and add alexa and/or google support to make it easy!
    and maybe a cooling environment to store all the drinks
    and something that checks if your bottles are full
    and maybe a web panel!
    hope you like this idea!

    • @michaelingrum4960
      @michaelingrum4960 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Nemo Jansen and something that scans the UPCs on the bottles to make switching out drinks easy. All you need is one of those USB scanners Amazon has for a few bucks.

    • @Scootrix
      @Scootrix 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Could use a weight sensor to detect when the bottle is getting close to empty and show an alert
      web panel is a great Idea Nemo just log on with your phone from anywhere and have a drink waiting when you get home

    • @cabe_bedlam
      @cabe_bedlam 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Weight sensor could also be used for measuring out the drinks, rather than running the pumps for a set amount of time like you do with mixing paint colours. Alcohol is 0.79 g/ml so if its 80 proof that (60% * 1.00)x + (40% * 0.79)x where x is the desired millilitres of lets say, vodka :)

    • @Agret
      @Agret 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Mike that's a good idea but instead they could have 6x RFID platforms and you slap an RFID tag on the bottom of each bottle that identifies it

    I’m not even a big mix drink consumer, but this is easily one of the best pi projects I’ve seen. I would probably add on a small cooler filled with ice and keep the drinks on ice in the back. Either remove the lid or just make a hole for the tubes.

    I made one of these several years ago using Arduino with a LCD with touch panel. The peristaltic pumps have to low capacity, and i upgraded from 4mm tubing to 6-7 mm tubing. Still slow but did the work a bit faster. I recommend looking into small food graded pumps or even air pressure for a improved model.

    My suggestion was to add 3D printed mounts that would accept the bottles and tilt so that you don't have to worry about the tubes staying at the bottom of the bottles. This may also help with maintaining the seal for carbonated beverages. It would probably have to be a larger box and base to support the weight but it might provide a nice way to showcase "the well"

    hey great work guys! if i have a suggestion it would be use an air pump to push air into the bottles, with another tube displacing the liquid into the drinks. itll keep the drinks from passing through the pump itself (especially with the coke). you would need another hose for each bottle but it probably keep the fizz better and pumps lasting longer

    • @nomercyriding
      @nomercyriding 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Skorch he shows you in the video that the type of pump they are using does not have the liquid come in contact with the pump housing. It simply "squeezes" the tube full of liquid.

At this point it has to be manually setup and disassembled when you are done using it. I love the use of the Raspberry Pi, I'm into aviation so I have a Pi that runs my own adsb/flightaware feeder. • @Satellite5

    One of the better produced videos. Informative and fun project. Adding the iBeam and frigerator are great ideas. There are issues... the funnel is contaminated with the other liquids. So if you are allergic to something, that could be an issue. Also bottles need closure or caps to protect the bottle from bugs or other elements, which you can probably buy. Could also add a 'counter' to know how many ml have been poured out. Would love to see this app 'driven' and configurable via an iPhone too! Awesome project and video.
