  • Earlier this week, one of the most famous Rock’n’Roll Fathers Ray Burton, Father of the late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton, sat down with Mark Agnesi to reminisce about Cliff Burton’s musical history and what it means to be the Dad of a child who shows interest in pursuing a career in music.
    Thanks to photographers Brian Lew and Harald Oimoen, Mark Weiss, Kevin Kitt and Vidz-R-Us for sharing photos of Cliff and to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for providing video for this special project.
    Extra special thanks to Metallica for allowing us to share both audio and video of Cliff and a very special thanks to Ray and Kaycee Burton for inviting us into their home to sit down and share memories of Cliff’s life and legacy.

      @michaelr.4878 5 ปีที่แล้ว +165

      Yeah, dude, it is an awful thing for a parent to have to bury a child. It is heartbreaking that this gentleman had to bury two of them. Neither boy even reached 30 years of age. Very sad. Mr. Burton has been through an awful lot of loss in his life. Children..wives..etc. The dude is a trooper. It is extremely cool that Metallica has kept Mr. Burton in the loop with the band and the band business. I am sure that he still receives Cliff's share of the royalties..even if they aren't legally obligated to pay him anymore.

    His father showed that he really cared about Cliffs interests and didn't judge him and make negative discouraging comments like some parents do. That is what really empowers children. Jan and Ray were wonderful people, Ray always reminded me of my Grandfather because every time I saw him he was wearing a bolo tie (the things we remember about people). When I met them, I had just taken a position playing bass for a Castro Valley band called Snyper the members of we’re friends of Cliff and as it turned out Jan was Co-management of Snyper. I was one of the masses of Bass Players that auditioned for Metallica, Jan and Ray were so nice they always made you feel welcome, we (Snyper) had a meeting at Jan and Rays apartment in Castro Valley and there was a corner of their place that had the gold records on the wall. Cliffs Basses were on stands witch Jan insisted I play a little bit while I was there, I still feel a little awkward about that, especially playing the “Legendary” Red Rickenbacker. Cliff was such a great player and musician witch I really didn’t realize until I started trying to learn the songs for the audition, that Man had some skills. Although I never met Cliff the man changed my life....RIP Cliff, Jan, and Ray....Love Always..♥️

    He's apparently always been there for the band even long after Cliff passed.
    I imagine it's alot of things, but i mostly think it's like staying around something that was a huge part of Cliffs life.
    Must be like still having a peice of him around.
    The band would agree, something about Cliffs playing and Cliff himself that had the band always bring him up till this day.

    Fantastic interview! Cliff was blessed to have such loving, supportive parents. I had no idea that Cliff’s parents treated the other band members like family. So when Cliff passed away and Metallica hired Jason Newsted as a replacement, this would explain why the band hazed Jason constantly. Jim, Kirk and Lars had found a second family with the Burtons. When Cliff died, however - it completely changed the dynamics of everything.

I've been a Metallica fan for almost 30 damn years now (since I was f'n 9 or 10 years old!) and I learned things I didn't know from this video! I had no idea Cliff had an older brother who passed when he was 13. God, that makes Ray and Jan seem even more amazing that they endured all that suffering and STILL managed to be so graceful and helpful to the surviving members.
