My favorite part was you taking crap about this brand. I bought a house with this exact model and it’s awful. But, everyone who came over kept talking about how lucky we are to have this fridge. Thanks for the video, I been trying to figure this out for a few days

Thanks for posting the removal process. I have the same fridge, but have not had any real issues. I replaced the door seal and that's it. The glacier that gets formed is due to the drain line getting clogged. That happened once with me. I turned it off, took out all the drawers, wiped everything up, and started pouring hot water to melt and flush the drain line that goes to a pan at the bottom of the fridge. I cleaned everything up, put everything back and all is good again. That was years ago when that happened. I keep it pretty clean and make sure mold and stuff doesn't build up on the seals. Nothing lasts forever, so when the compressor dies, I'll remember the process thanks to you and put in one of those nice modern refrigerators with all the new LED lights. :-)

We bought our Sub Zero 550, 24 years ago, and loved and enjoyed it for many many years - until it began to fail in its later years and could not be repaired. Thank you for the video and your great skill at working through this process of removing it. We plan to put it in our truck piece by piece and take it to a recycling center. Of course we must first follow your example and instructions to remove it. We plan to replace it with the least expensive slide in Fridge that fits the width of the space and counter depth. We are retired now, so won't be getting another built in, due to the high cost even though they look, fit and function well in our narrow kitchen. Thank you again! Much success to you in all that you do!

Thanks very much for this quick and informative How To. Just bought a house with a 1994 Subzero 550. We moved in a few weeks ago and the 550 is dying. Repairman says the refrigerant is N/A and fridge is basically obsolete. Your video is precisely what I needed. Thanks again.

I bought a 36" wide Subzero 550 in 2005, it was new, but actually built in 2000. After both the freezer and fridge compressors failed last year, Subzero paid for both compressors and most of the labor to repair and replace them. Everyone has different opinions about everything, but I think Subzero is an incredible company, especially after it paid to fix a 20 year old unit. Plus I built a 'stainless steel' restaurant style kitchen in my home, and the Subzero with stainless panels installed looks stunning, no other unit comes close to match the beauty or reliability and customer service of a Subzero.

We bought our 550 when we had the house built in 1987. It’s working fine but it’s finally rusted out under the freezer door after 37 years I think that’s so impressive that I ordered a new one it’s a classic 3650u/o I’ll be happy if it last 20 years

I have that model from 1994 so far only the ice maker stopped working and I had to change the freezer rubber gasket. Very good video for when it needs to go! 😀 Too bad you don't have the video of the doors disassembly.

Thanks for the thoughtfulness of creating & sharing this video. My SubZero 550 was installed in 1988. I'm the original owner. I've had one or two moderately expensive repairs/upgrades in 30 years but otherwise the unit works well. My challenge now is I need to pull it out of a cabinet similar to the one shown for the sole purpose of replacing the drain tube which can only be accessed from the rear. (Groan). But what is missing is the rollers! It sits on feet similar to shown, but there is no roller to lower it down onto. Until I saw this video, I had no idea those rollers existed! My search for a solution continues.

My SubZero532 just passed it's 30th b-day and is still going strong. Just replaced the gaskets on the frig and freezer. Over the years have had only two repair bills -- one to replace the refrigerant valve and once to replace the freezer condenser. Other than that couldn't be more pleased.

I have to remove my subzero as well but it was installed sometime in the mid to late 70's. It came with the home we bought 10 years ago but now it's just too dirty to bother fixing. I'm wondering how the removal of the compressor and components went for you. This video will be helpful, good tips even though my fridge is much older it still looks pretty much the same.

I bought a house last year that has a 1988 subzero 550 and the insulation is shot so while it creates the cold it’s supposed to it doesn’t hold it in and there’s no way to fix it so I’ve gotta remove it and replace it. and the problem is it’s got all kinds of built-in cabinetry and molding and everything else around it, so what I thought was a positive of my new house is actually an expensive negative it’s also costing something like $50 a month in electricity.

Waterline to icemaker busted. The subflooring is damaged and leaked to basment. Water also creeper in living room and the carpet has mold on in. Some of the wood flooring is warped to hell, wood tile.
The water rolled down to legs. The subflooring had gotte weak in those spots so the fridge sunk down. Long story I can't get the drip pan under the fridge. And ofcourse the back of fridge was ice. Had so much it pushed the drawers out.
Ordered a new door gasket, thinking warm air might be getting into fridge. Dam thing costs $200.00. Curious if you had tried replacing the gasket. Mine does have a whole in it and the top left corner seems bent too far back.

Wondering what you replaced the SubZero 550 with? Mine has a bad freezer compressor. It's over 27 years old. Not spending any more $ on it. It came with my house too. I want to try and get something that fits the space well AND also be of some sort of quality.

It would be best to disconnect the water line before you pull it out, not all refrigerators have extra tubing underneath. To be safe check it.
