Fighting for Paradise: Puerto Rico’s Future | CBS Reports

  • In the midst of economic, political and climate crises, Puerto Rico has lost nearly 12% of its population over the last decade, mostly to join the 6 million Puerto Rican diaspora now living in the 50 states. Tax incentives meant to lure investments have led some Puerto Ricans to fear that the island is turning into a fiscal paradise for wealthy outsiders, driving even more locals out. Many administrations have pushed for a more prosperous Puerto Rico, but they often blame the territorial status for falling short. Is statehood, independence, or something else the solution? And who gets to decide?

That’s idiotic, how will statehood favor Puerto Rico? Just look at all the states. Puerto Rico will have two senators and 6 congressmen representing them in Washington. Plus more benefits will come to the island.
Make no mistake about it, statehood of the status quo is way better than independence.
And if you doubt, just go to our neighboring islands who have better resources than we do. I guarantee corruption and poverty will destroy the island. Just look at the history of Puerto Rico before the United States took them over.
I will like for whoever is declaring independence, to outline everything that can happen for Puerto Rico in terms of benefits for the people of Puerto Rico.
Thank god the majority know the real deal. The last peblecite 52% wanted statehood and 48% wanted the status quo. Only 8 percent wanted statehood.

Well, do you have to convince only 51 or 60? This, is how politicians talk when they have no answers. He says, 'How come we are citizens of the most democratic nation in the world,, yet we don't vote for the President, yet we have no voting representation in congress. "It makes no sense". Really? 🤔Either the Gov is an idealistic teen or this rhetoric guides his political power. Because that Superpower called the US doesnt want us! I'm Puerto Rican by blood and I have family from both sides from my parents living in Puerto Rico and mainland United States. Making Puerto Rico a state isn't going to change if you don't take away insular cases that utilizes anglo saxon principles, the control of our budget, provide fair taxes for Puerto Ricans, our land, our right to vote, benefits that mainland American people recieve we should receive on the island like Medicare, pardon on the debt or atleast a fair payment amount, and much more issues that are happening today. Most importantly you got to remove the corruption of government from both the US Congress and in Puerto Rico because this is going om for 100+ years and we're sick of it.

I was not born in Puerto Rico. My grandparents arrived in New York when they were teenagers. After my mother was born, my grandparents tried moving back to the island, but they couldn't find a job over the two years they stayed. I have only visited Puerto Rico as a tourist. However, it still feels like home to me. My favorite memories are seeing mi familia en Caguas, or walking through El Yunque, and getting fresh coconut water along the small mom and pop shops along the way. I want to go back so bad. Seeing videos like these hurt. They hurt my heart and soul. I messaged my local representative to consider statehood when the most recent referendum showed most wanted it. I was mad at the current state of the island. I'm not so sure if statehood would be the best option now. All I know is that the situation as it is now is not acceptable. Something needs to change. Puerto Rico needs to become independent or a state. Something needs to be done. The Jones Act needs to be abolished. The tax breaks to rich corporations from the years of Operation Bootstrap need to go. The language is already fading. Me and my cousins are the first who don't speak Spanish fluently. I still maintain my culture. The music, the food, the history. I don't want these things to dissappear too. I don't want my home to be destroyed because the people in power don't care. Because there are so many people who do care, and they are the ones who need change the most, because their lives depend on it. Somos de aquí, como el coquí.

Puerto Rico residents pay more in federal income taxes every year than do residents of six U.S. states: "From 1998 up until 2006, when Puerto Rico was hit by its present economic recession, Puerto Rico consistently paid more than $4 billion annually in federal taxes and impositions into the national fisc." This was more that the IRS collected from taxpayers in six States of the Union: Vermont, Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, and Alaska, as well as the Northern Mariana Islands.[17][18]
People of the island pay too much taxes to the USA, they are comfortable the way they are, since in the USA, nobody owns their properties, if they do not pay taxes, the government will auction them. On the island, people who own a very expensive property pays, the ones who own a humble house in the countryside as I understand do not pay taxes. They are afraid of these people losing their properties if unable to pay property taxes.

Agree 1000%, and all puerto ricans in the US should also return, or be branded traitor who served the colonizers, i wish BLM have this mentality, y'know move back to africa with pride or something like that, im asian, and we love colonizers, so we will stay in the US and take care of the thing you cool and awesome people left behind, i support PR people in their quest to gain their independence and return to motherland and preserve their culture, all of them.

@@jameslevin9720 You do realize that is about a few centuries since many of the Black American ancestry came from the African continent and that for people who support BLM whether they still look black or their ancestry somehow makes them look white now, it would be near a death sentence to be sent off to the African continent because lack of knowledge in the region's culture, a person may not realize that they are defended from one clan so when (BUT RATHER IF) they choose to live in a certain region of Africa and miraculously be able to start learning the language and a few basics their child might accidentally be born with the racial features of a clan that would not be commonly seen in that area plus the outsider thing
Moreover, whether for PR or for people of black ancestry, YOU DO realize that the upheaval would cause an economic backlash of GREAT proportions right?
And let me tell you a little something, some people side with the US in the PR independence debate maybe not completely of their own solitary individual fault, notice the focus on solitary individual, as it is the job of each and every person to learn what they can but the things related to unfortunate or greedy politician that sides with the US being swiped clean off of the history books, oh and there is also the fact that PR right now, as it is, has issues with people's jobs something maybe not completely characterized, but lets just say you put an add of looking for help for blah type of jobs, then you get tons of calls of people wanting the work, obviously you are one of the few (most of the time) of those work ads that that worker may have found... as in there are lots of issues finding a job... also, you have a particular skill set, hope you have happy hunting finding a work place that exists that works with your skill set, pays at least a semi livable wage, near your home (ish), and actually has room to hire you Also, as a rule of thumb, anything that comes suddenly to become the new hope for the PR insular economy will receive backlash of sorts that will either A make it into an average working part of the economy and not the hope B fake hope C completely destroyed is the dream for that part of economy to continue for more than a few years
Also, what time frame? what time frame would you propose? What ways do you think the forcing of people back into ancestral lands will have in the conditions of the government forcing that exodus? As in will it become an authoritarian government? Will it lead to some kind of backlash which would lead to economic backlash because of the exodus itself? Something like that?

Buy up communities and make them vacation rentals driving prices up. It’s sad to see. What is worse, it’s foreign money making profit not Americans and we are a state! Hawaii is being “pimped.” PR, if it becomes a state will find that same fate.

A lot Europeans go to Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico and are buying land in front the beach and built hotels and the beaches become private just for guest and we can’t enjoy it anymore. Because the beach become private and belongs to them. In the long term with the climate change the ocean will rip off the walls of the hotel structure. Suggestion, avoid crime filled areas, also, no judging people on their nationality too much, bring portable battery chargers (we have issues with our supplier of electricity and water but that's another issue) and have them full of energy, ready for road trip (people usually stay within Viejo San Juan when turist-ing, don't do that, explore different areas such as the different sands that are on the island and different altitudes of the island, do check the history of the national park that you want to visit, want to wear jeans not shorts even under infernal heat, public transport doesn't really work and people naturally think as the first thing that comes to mind when public transport is "oh, it will mean another politician wasting money and it's not even of him being corrupt", so fair warning. Temperatures are sometimes good, sometimes bad, as a rule of thumb also what is typical PR food in one area might not be the same of another.. for example, my grandfather was from the mountains, he did NOT eat a lot of rice and beans, I do, but I live in a different area... also, note that supermarkets are very catered towards americanization so many of the actual typical fruits aren't found easily in supermarkets, nor a grand variety of fish that is a LOT more typical than things like salmon and stuff... also here private school does not mean utterly stuck up unless it's certain private schools plus expensive car as education is bad and well... that's even though it's one of our most expensive departments however, free cafeteria food for all students by law (in efforts to increase student productivity even among poor children) Also, we do believe in global warming but [eople generally don't want to do anything
we have many breath taking scenery depending where you go.. for example, you go through the south to get to a western town, the scenery may change quite a bit from any mountains or from metro areas
also, simple suggestions (beside wear actual jeans as to look less touristy to the people0, clean person is a admirable member of society so avoid speaking of how many times you bathe cause we bathe at lest 1 a day unless pigsty mentality linkage avoid impatience, yes, the gasoline prices are high yes, certain food prices are high, yes tech prices are over a hundred dollars more expensive here than outside the island generally look at if a certain beach is clean enough to bathe in, ready for bumpy car rides, restaurant may give large portions of food bakery is more like cafe's and our street ice cream taste very different than something like Baskin Robbins or something, careful of street pirogues or street ice cream cost cause if it's like 5 than defiantly try another street vendor usually it's supposed to be very cheap... generally water bottles should be 1 dollar something like 3 dollars would be like Fiji or a scam avoid scam
We as a people are very proud that NASA loves to take people from UPR MAYAGUEZ, I think it's la Politecnica that has certification on classes on cyber security being one of the few colleges in American territory, mainland or not, to have that certification (not like tiny amount but a small-is two digit number)
La UPR used to be called the best education in the world for low price but not any more, basically now for example, the main campus is now the campus of protestors since university prices rising and so on... We produce tons of meds for the US, we also have water springs that have great purity lots of abandoned projects original home of all the coquis, and one of the places the American conquistadores found pineapple's but you already know about the current monopoly a company in Hawaii has on growing them Pineapples used to be called Ananas We have almost all types of soil on earth and still we waste most of it... Live just under the world's second deepest trench yet using sea, also wasted
      so on...

Just like Israel did when it first settled in the midst of the middle east. It can be done but it must be for the right reasons to keep the Puerto Rican identity and culture alive and thriving. The lack of Economic development is at the core of this problem. If the local and federal gov paid real attention to that we'd make the whole political question moot.
We are, however, governed by people who have demonstrated abject ignorance on economic matters. They are also prone to condoning fraud, abuse, and corruption in government.
There is no way, under any political status, that PR can get out of the hole without breaking the traditional political system's back. The old parties need to go, and we need hard-coded limits to government taxing and budgeting in the constitution. We also need more emphasis on corruption detection and punishment. We need to rethink our democracy to make it less dependent on the short term populism of the PPD, and PNP.
The Americans like to say, "Beggar's can't be choosers". We've been turned into beggars by our dependency on handouts instead of economic independence. If we can build a sustainable economy it'd be us telling the US what we can be rather than them telling us what we can't.

hmm, being free or becoming a state. I choose freedom everyday of the week especially on Sunday. we as Puerto Rican's should decide our own fate. becoming a state has its benefits but also its negatives. there are many luxuries that we have that we take for granted. Every great Nation has its own problems and they fix their problems as one Nation. Just think all the people who have homes on the island for a minute. If Puerto Rico became a state do you think they could afford the same taxes they pay as mainland? We have a real chance to be free of the U.S. and you want to give all away to become a state. We have some of the smartest people in the world in Puerto Rico that love their island that want to see its people come together to face all their problems head on and not be totally dependent on another Nation for survival.

This video leaves out a lot of information for instance, many of the properties they say are being bought would never purchased by locals because they are just too expensive. Also, Dorado was always a place where the wealthy lived and wanted to live, nothing new. And finally many of the people that are complaining about the people that are moving in are not paying don’t mention that they themselves don’t pay taxes because they don’t make enough money. I know this because I lived on the island for many years and the majority of people someone find a way to never pay taxes. Talk to anyone that lived and they might tell you the same.
