AT Productions I think that the skill of the director has a lot to do with the believability. A lot of CGI is "over-animated," and reveals its falsehood. Similarly, poor puppetry can ruin a good practical effect. No matter what the limitations, however, a director who knows the effect he or she is going for will overcome them. I think the next "Henson" in this regard is Guillermo Del Toro. The creatures in his films always have a lasting impact, whether they're rendered in makeup, animatronics, or CGI.
lisvender I bet Del Toro would've made a good Labyrinth sequel or prequel. I would've like to learn where Hoggle came from and if Sarah had been gifted power at a young age. It's really interesting...
I think the best actor was the person in Hoggle like imagine not being able to really see and still trying to match the movements she did an amazing job
"Hoggle is certainly the most complicated puppet/ creature that we've ever built" and they left him behind at an airport in alabama XD ah! i love labyrinth :)
But sadly Hoggle now doesnt have that same Jim Henson sense and feel to him after being restored by someone else....... Poor Hoggle, left in a luggage bag to rot and decay for many years until he was finally found...
@@FalFur101 Those bastards! What gives them the right to claim treasures like Hoggle and keep them behind glass prisons‽ Aren't they showing off their own incompetence‽
An absolutely amazing Puppet/Special Effect that still holds up to this day; the way he looks and moves is incredible! It's understandable why effects like this weren't used that much back then since they were so hard to do, but the hard work definitely paid off. And if they could manage stuff like that with animatronics and puppets back in the 80's, just imagine what they could pull off with stuff like that nowadays; film makers just need to put in the elbow grease! CGI is ok, but it's just getting so boring now.
And yet, Roger Ebert still thought these were Muppets. And people today still think they're Muppets. But they're _not_ Muppets. They're _creatures_ . Created by Jim Henson's Creature Shop.
Exactly, Puppets that are built by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop are known as Creatures. Puppets that are built by the used-to-be-named Muppet Workshop are known as Muppets.
The complete performance of Hoggle as a character in a live action film took at least 6 people with Voice, body and puppetry. Yet he still seems more real in depth of emotional range than most of Hollywood
The Dark Crystal was my favourite film as a kid and is still selling well in stores to this day. Jim Henson, like Disney, with his creation was a genius of a man!
This is -fantastic.- This is one of my favorite, most iconic movies of all time (I'm an 80s baby ;)), so this was an absolute delight to find. This is almost a lost art or close to disappearing. Animated movies are great too but there’s just something about puppets in the movies that makes it almost magical.

Please no. I like how it ends, I'm not sure if I'm willing to see a sequel. Besides Jennifer Connelly is an adult now, no longer a young maiden and the international Rockstar David Bowie is gone. Will just have to see. 🧃

I don't even have a clue who this character was, but nostalgia was urgent to reminisce so I searched rotted animatronic s and I came into knowing of hoggle . I stand firm at the old ALFer though!
I keep telling my wife, I much rather watch old movies. It felt more reel and it’s lost from today’s CGI bs. I watch movies today, then once the CGI comes in, in completely loose interest. It’s a movie killer. I’m planning on showing my wife this movie later.

Jim Henson made puppetry a true art form
I miss movies with puppets. They look so much more life like than CGI.
Gollum was great. One of the better full cgi characters. Mainly because it is motion capture. An actor (Andy Serkis) is Gollum.

Pooooooooooooooop

That's why Hoggle often makes a bunch of grunts and groans throughout the movie- so she can see where she's going, not bump into stuff.
Hoggle's puppeteers are amazing! And so are the people that actually created him. The movements are spot on and so smooth

its a shame they dont make movies like this anymore. where it takes hard work and sets are built. enough with this cgi crap.
Next thing you know, you'll start staying "enough with color movies, bring back black & white." "Enough with cars, bring back horses."
I mean, CGI is hard too, but I agree with your general statement.

The moral of the story is that good CGI starts in good practical effects.
This is way better than cgi
Wonderful! This is the reason I subscribed!! I had no idea so much work went into Hoggle. To call it "teamwork" would be an understatement.

I can’t believe Hoggle was voiced and puppetted by Jim’s 23 year old son.🤯
