Why'd they made that one Muppet out of Leather? That's not a leather Muppet, that's David Bowie. (joking of course, he was a great singer, and awesome in this movie)
Every once in a while, I'll turn to my 7 year old sister and say "You remind me of the babe." and she continues and we go throughout the whole thing every time. Lol, she never learns. I'm glad David Bowie got to be a part of her life, at least for a little while.
Abby Langin that's cool that she knows that - if you had said "You remind me of the babe" to me when I was 7, I wouldn't have known what you were talking about!
I loved David Bowie and still do, he was an amazing person, as a kid he let me escape into the amazing fantasy of labyrinth jareth being my favourite character, yesterday was a very upsetting day for me and many others
If this were made today, David would be on a blue screen set surrounded by digital puppeteers and it would be cgi’d to death. There’s something about physical presence that can’t be duplicated by computer
this is the prehistoric time were people who sang professionally sounded like *FUCKING GODS WHO DESERVE ALL THE LOVE IN THE WORLD* even *without* autotune
This is the behind the scenes I was looking for! I loved hearing Bowie's interpretation of Jareth, kind of revealing what Jareth wished he could do or be, and who he really was despite the grand title of a king, which was a big kid. So grateful that many great minds collaborated to make this amazing movie.
Looks like he had fun doing this movie. Must have been hard playing a serious character. He seemed like one of those guys who likes to laugh and have fun.
Every time I watch this movie it is like opening a window into my heart and letting in the sunshine. It brushes away the cobwebs. It clears the shadows. Thank you for sharing this fascinating behind the scenes.
David darling Im missing you so much i may only be 14 and so i haven't known you for as long as most of your other fans but you made a huge impact on my life and will continue to for the rest of it. Rest on mars ziggy i love you
If you hadn't seen the film but had an image in your mind of the perfect Goblin King, David is it. 'Sinister sexy' . Makeup & wardrobe nailed his look. Timeless fairytale fantasy. RIP David.
Tbh, if I'd been the baby in this movie and was told all my life that I had worked with David Bowie when I was a baby and had even been held by him, I'd just be like, "Damn, I wish I could remember that!!"
It was already blessed. That baby's parents worked on both Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. I don't know how he could have grown up to be anything other than a magical creature of some sort. HE'S probably the goblin king now.
David Bowie and I have the dame humor. "My friend had a cute baby but no matter how hard I kicked it it wouldn't cry" and he said it so casually that I can't stop laughing
I recently turned 18 and I keep finding myself going back to movies I grew up with. And I'm just so glad that I got to grow up with people like Jim Henson and David Bowie in my life ya know. Like damn I just get so filled with happiness knowing I'll always have those memories or trying to sing a long to this song!
I was eleven years old when this movie came out, and I had the biggest crush on Jareth because of David Bowie, how he sang and acted, and to this day I still love him, now I really miss him as well...like I do Robin Williams and John Ritter, two of my other childhood crushes. I'll never forget them.
The movie was absolutely perfect in it's filming and overall execution. It's one of those that despite that, it barely gets the attention it deserves. Henson and Bowie were also two of those rare breeds of genius whose mere existence changed how what they worked in was done for decades. Jim's legacy, and the workshop itself, are still actively advancing puppetry as well as CGI. They include CGI because Jim's son saw the similarities between a CGI character and a puppet.
Brian Henson held auditions for background puppeteers for the movie and was aided by a young Kevin Clash. Henson and Clash would hold further auditions for permanent Creature Shop puppeteers in 1986.
I think it really can't be said how much practical effects contribute to an actor's performance and dedication to their role. If Bowie had simply been in front of a green screen this whole time, he probably wouldn't have been as good as he was. He had something physical to act off of, something to work with. Something to help him see himself as Jared the Goblin King.
Charles Augins helping with the choreography. He also helped with the choreography of Tongue-Tied on Red Dwarf and the production staff was so impressed with him, he was asked to play Queeg as well. Cheers.
They should release a version on widescreen Blu-Ray that shows on the right side the behind scenes shot while the movie shot appears on the left in unison.
I thought the same thing- now everyone is too scared of their own shadow coz there's always someone with a chip on their shoulder wanting to sue for absolutely anything! Hate people playing the race card. Pathetic.
Lamp Shade times change and you need to get used to it instead of whining. Shit is always changing and we are always learning. Things obviously weren't like the 60s in the 80s... of course in 2017 it's not like the 80s. It would be pretty pathetic and sad if we hadn't progressed since then. Grow up and move on instead of crying about how much you wish you could get away with.
Excuse me? I'm not 'whining', I don't need to 'grow up...' I bet you'd be a real laugh in the audience at a live comedy gig. You'd be balling your eyes out and throwing your nappy around every time the comedian says something that *offends* you. THAT'S 'pretty pathetic'.
I wonder why they didn’t explain why one of the goblin actors pulled Bowie away when Toby was thrown in the air before the goblin catches him instead???? Anyone know??
David Bowie has goblin features in his face, especially when he laughs. He makes a perfect Goblin King.
ikr, like when he laughs at 2:37, it actually freaked me out, a little!
The goblins have David Bowie features in _their_ faces, and they should be so lucky!
Why'd they made that one Muppet out of Leather?
That's not a leather Muppet, that's David Bowie.
(joking of course, he was a great singer, and awesome in this movie)
Сам, ты, гоблин
This is the most back handed compliment I've ever read
Every once in a while, I'll turn to my 7 year old sister and say "You remind me of the babe." and she continues and we go throughout the whole thing every time. Lol, she never learns. I'm glad David Bowie got to be a part of her life, at least for a little while.
Abby Langin that's cool that she knows that - if you had said "You remind me of the babe" to me when I was 7, I wouldn't have known what you were talking about!
I did the same to my little brother.
I love how the puppeteers had their puppets in character, even when they're not filming actively.
I loved David Bowie and still do, he was an amazing person, as a kid he let me escape into the amazing fantasy of labyrinth jareth being my favourite character, yesterday was a very upsetting day for me and many others
R.I.P David xxxx
absolutely I agree 100%
milly kay and it's almost returned again😞
True.
Rip David Bowie
1942-2016 ❤
Love David's smile
Same - one smile from him, and I MELT!!!
If this were made today, David would be on a blue screen set surrounded by digital puppeteers and it would be cgi’d to death. There’s something about physical presence that can’t be duplicated by computer
But they did use blue screen effect on some scenes in this film...
i mean, it's not necessarily bad
@@camilo.1493 Anyway, Kudos to Jim Henson and his Creature Shop! RIP
@@yosefdemby8792 RIP
LOVE this comment because it is absolutely true. They would have CGI'd it to death. No magic in the scene.

LOL "I did laughing gnome, might as well do baby gurgles" XDD
"I never thought in 20 years, I'd come back to working with gnomes" X)

It's one of those occasions when someone gets casts as a character and you then imagine no one else playing the character! Absolutely perfect
Every time I watch this movie it is like opening a window into my heart and letting in the sunshine. It brushes away the cobwebs. It clears the shadows. Thank you for sharing this fascinating behind the scenes.
Bowie IS Jareth! All hail!
Singing with no mic and auto tune. Talent.
SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST MEANT FOR CERTAIN ROLES. DAVID DIDNT JUST PLAY THE GOBLIN KING, HE IS THE GOBLIN KING.
David darling Im missing you so much i may only be 14 and so i haven't known you for as long as most of your other fans but you made a huge impact on my life and will continue to for the rest of it. Rest on mars ziggy i love you
can we be best friends? cuz I'm 15 and also a fan of bowie!
Hii, i'm 15 😂
Let's not forget the other brilliant man behind this movie, Jim Henson. Much appreciation for both artists.
Terry Jones also, so a trio of geniuses
If you hadn't seen the film but had an image in your mind of the perfect Goblin King, David is it. 'Sinister sexy' . Makeup & wardrobe nailed his look. Timeless fairytale fantasy. RIP David.

David Bowie is GOD.
+Tracy Vanity close he was born with his eye being blind, I am the one you would refer to as God.
Definitely. ❤️⚡️

I know the story about Bowie,it wasnt til after this comment I found out...none the less hes not God, close but no..
thanks though.
Weeeelllllll, close enough, anyway!
Tracy.3 I love David Bowie, but no, he wasn't God.
Aww! David with a baby! So adorable! ^.^ I absolutely adore Jareth (mad smexy Gobin King), and enjoy the whole film as well. :3
Jareth was probably my first crush lol
Tbh, if I'd been the baby in this movie and was told all my life that I had worked with David Bowie when I was a baby and had even been held by him, I'd just be like, "Damn, I wish I could remember that!!"

I don't know how he could have grown up to be anything other than a magical creature of some sort. HE'S probably the goblin king now.

I remember when I stumbled upon this when I was 8 or so. Still my favorite movie. Can't believe Bowie died 3 years ago.
David was a genius, and a gracious, humorous and humble man. The best!!!

this is one of my favorite scenes in Labyrinth. Amazing all the behind the scenes stuff they had to do to make it. Kudos to cast and crew! 😀
Magic dance is the kind of song to get up and dance along to. Well David Bowie I would have loved to dance with you.
Pinnacle of storytelling and practical effects. True genius
