Our whole family loved the Carousel of Progress when I was a kid. We used to sing along as it moved. I was so sad when it left Disneyland. Fast forward to my first and only trip to WDW trip just a few years ago and I went on it again. I actually cried because of all the memories I had with my family. (Parents have passed on). I’m so glad you did this video Chris. Thank you!

The reference the dad makes about “the rat race” was reference to a novel by Jay Franklin in 1947. And the GE refrigerator is a 1946 model. So the 40’s scene is actually sometime around 1947.

There's also a reference to the TV news program featuring John Cameron Swayze. Swayze anchored NBC's coverage of the 1948 political conventions, then hosted a show the same year called the Camel Newsreel Theatre; followed the next year by Camel News Caravan (sponsored by Camel cigarettes). So 1948 or 49 seems the most logical year.

This is one of my favorite attractions! There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow is probably my favorite Disney song because it so embodies the optimistic forward-thinking spirit of Walt Disney himself, as has been said by Richard Sherman, who composed the song along with his brother Robert Sherman. Richard called the song "Walt's theme song, because he was very positive about the future. He really felt that there was a great big beautiful tomorrow shining at the end of every day." The Carousel of Progress also had a second theme song also composed by the Sherman Brothers called The Best Time of Your Life from 1975 when the Carousel of Progress opened at the Magic Kingdom until 1993. This was done at the request of the sponsor General Electric. The story goes that General Electric wanted a new theme song because they didn't want consumers to wait until tomorrow to buy their products, but instead that 'now is the best time' to buy GE appliances. The lyrics do focus more on the present, but are still just as positive:
Now is the time, now is the best time
Now is the best time of your life
Life is a prize, live ev'ry minute
Open your eyes and watch how you win it
Yesterday's mem'ries may sparkle and gleam
Tomorrow is still but a dream
Right here and now you've got it made
The world's forward marching and you're in the parade
Now is the time, now is the best time
Be it a time of joy or strife
There's so much to cheer for
    Be glad you're here
For it's the best time of your life
I like to think that There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow expresses three wishes for everyone: that each brand new day may bring you new hope, that you may follow your dreams with mind and heart, and when those ideas become a reality, it will be a dream come true for you and me!

My mom is proud to say she is one of the millions who saw it at the 64 worlds fair (she was 6 and it was the first family trip she remembers going on). She’s just happened to see it during major milestones in her life, the second time she saw it was on her honeymoon when she and my dad got married in ‘81, the third time was the first time she brought my sister and I to the parks in the early 90s, on trips celebrating mine and sisters hs and college graduations, and last fall she took her first grandson on CoP. So the CoP has a special place in her heart and in my family’s.

I think the family in the last scene are supposed to be the same family. Maybe they used new tech to have face lifts. Also - Orville is voiced by Mel Blanc the voice of bugs bunny. He also did Gideon's hick-up in Pinocchio. 💙💚💙💚

Mel Blanc (Bugs bunny )also is the voice of uncle Orville and thought another too! The white board at the end has a message for Marty Skylar to call Walt ! I was just in Disneyland last week hoping to run into you guys ! The canoes were closed 😥 Love all your videos ! I've been on this a lot over 10 times you kinda blew my mind with the aging thing !🧐 Yea facial cream have progressed in the future so that's why they look younger 😂😂

You beat me to it regarding not mentioning Jean Shepard as the current voice of the father. In addition to him being the narrator of A Christmas Story (as well as having a cameo as the man that points Ralphie to the end of the line for Santa Claus in the department store), he also was the author of the story itself.

Was invited to my best buds house to watch a tape of Disneyland at the World's Fair in the 80's. Drank Sioux City Sarsaparilla + popcorn. I eventually saw it in 2002. They happened to be running the show. GBBT was the song the Sherman Bros. came UP with that summed UP Walt's life. Walt acted out a scene of cousin Orville in the bathtub. He didn't like the staging, so he went to the tub, slipped off his shoes/socks and his toes were peering over the top of the rim of the tub. Walt commented "And his toes should be wiggling". Can you just see Uncle Walt at his acting finest? Walt really knew how to tell a story.

Just for clarification, the Carousel of Progress opened at Magic Kingdom on January 15, 1975, the same day Space Mountain opened. I believe it closed at Disneyland in '73. Disney World fans also were treated to a new song when the move occurred. Gone was "Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" and replaced with "The Best Time of Your Life" (the story was GE wanted you to buy appliances 'now' and not 'tomorrow'. When Tomorrowland was updated in '93-'94, "Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" was restored to the attraction, and it's been that way since.

I love this ride but have never been on it. My theory on John is that he could be John Jr in the 2000's scene of COP. Something I did notice about the 2000's is that oven looks like it is from the 1980's. I agree with you about the time warp in COP. In the turn of the century scene the dad talks about the Wright brothers starting to build their airplane which that was in 1903 and then he talks about the new act in the 1904 St. Louis World Fair. this could mean that this is Valentine's Day of 1903 and everyone found out about the acts of the 1904 World's Fair a year early or it is Valentine's Day of 1904 like you said. Now I agree with you that the 1920's scene is set in 1927. The only problem I have is that the dad said Charles Lindbergh is getting ready to take his flight across the Atlantic and then talks about 4th of July festivals. The issue I have there is that Lindbergh's flight was May 20-21, 1927. Now the 1940's scene the refrigerator could be a 1940's refrigerator or a 1950's refrigerator. The dishwasher could definitely be a 1950 dishwasher because I looked up ads for a 1940's dishwasher and ads for a 1950's dishwasher. I always ask myself what happened to the kid that was helping wash the clothes in the turn of the century scene. You have great content. I always learn something about Disney when I watch your videos. Keep doing this amazing job that you do.

Never rode it at DL but rode it at WDW. I kind of miss it at DL but when it was replaced with *America Sings* (I miss that too), I was glad. Stages of the ride at DL include: Carousel of Progress, America Sings, Innoventions, Marvel, and Star Wars: Launch Bay (I might have one or two, those are the ones I remember). Now in 2023 it needs to be replaced again or totally removed to bring something and exciting (Pandora maybe? IDK).

I so miss the Carousel of Progress! Hey Disney, why can't you bring it back to Disneyland? You have the building that you have been trying to figure out what to do with for the last 2 Decades. You know how we tell our kids "back when I was a kid, or back in my day"? Well why can't you bring it back to Disneyland with the concept of reversal of Tomorrow Land? Same ride as before with the possible exception of the last room. I don't know exactly, I am just an old Curmudgeon that loves history. That is why we depend upon you imagineering kids with all the ideas. Again, this way you could put the empty building to good use.
Thanks Chris for bringing this out in the open to Southern California.

      Thankyou Laura.
As to an updated version, that would be ok, but my whole thought from my attic is the idea of reversed Tomorrow Land. Using the basic original Carousel of Progress, to show where we have been, and the last room of where we are going. Maybe the last room a little bit of fantasy, like what would it be like living on the moon, or Mars? Ok, yes, I am maybe going a little over the top, but what do you expect from a lonely old dreamer? Come meet me, and we could fantasize about what we would like, haha.
Oh, Trek,... I was not talking about bringing Florida's version here. Leave it there for them to enjoy. I was talking about building a new version replicating the one we had. With updated animatronics (sp). They have been trying to figure out what to do with that building for over 2 decades and this would fit the build. You say that youth would not be interested? Using that thinking, most of the dark rides in fantasy land would be empty, or Enchanted Tiki Room, or Moments with Mr Lincoln. I don't know if you have any kids, but this would be the best way for old coots like me to preach the old back in my day speal.
Chris, I am sorry for turning this into my private soapbox, or pulpit. I should be mad at you. While waiting for my truck at work, I found this video, and after watching it, all night at work, I have been singing the Theme song all night. I forgot how catchy that song is, like Small World is.

I have an original pamphlet of the Carousel of Progress from 1964, it was always my favorite when it was at Disneyland. It's odd they skipped about 50-60 years all the way to the 2000's when the rest was going at about a 20 year pace. Besides, they missed a lot of history from the 60's-80's and inventions like the 8-track to cassette tapes to the CD, color TV, microwave oven, the PC, etc.

Hey Chris. I think the family is subsequent generations. Granddad is dad in the first scene. He is gone in the early scenes because he is lost in the 2018-2019 flu. Dad from the 20s is gone in the 40s/50s because of WWII. Granddad finally survives into the 90s because he was stationed state-side during Korea.

I never realized Jean Shepherd (the narrator of A Christmas Story) was the voice of John! Watching this video I asked my husband if John sounded familiar so I had to look it up! 😂❤❤. He even makes a few references to the movie…whether it was intended or not 😂

My thing with Carousel of Progress is that on the PeopleMover, the narrator describes it as "four families,:" and it's clearly the same family in all scenes. I had a WDW cast member even try to look into this for me, and they got nothing, even as a cast member. Can you try to get to the bottom of this? I'm not expecting miracles, but it's worth asking.. That has driven me over a wall for a LOT of years.

One of my most favorite attractions!! I think because it’s vintage Disney. My kids hassle me so much about it but who can’t get hooked singing, “It’s a great big beautiful tomorrow.”

While Rex Allen was the original voice of the father, the current show’s father is voiced by Jean Shepherd, who was also the narrator and co-writer of A Christmas Story.

After reading the comments to this video, and all those that made comments about how so many missed Carousel of Progress, could we start a petition to bring it back?
If not, could we start a phone campaign to bring it back?

Here’s something else I didn’t notice the first time I saw it, but is obvious in retrospect: they aren’t just moving through the decades, they’re moving through times of year in order, with each scene marked by a holiday.
    1900s: There’s a Valentine’s dance, so it’s in February
    1920s: Fourth of July
    1940s: Halloween, October
    2000: Christmas, December.

So, I don't think this is following one family through all these years. It's just showing a representation of the family through the different levels of progress.

  • @mindyussery5517
    @mindyussery5517 ปีที่แล้ว

I can’t believe you had never been on it! It is just showing one family and how they would be in different time periods. However, why is the boy suddenly grown up in the last scene? The last scene got a bit of a makeover recently. Fresh hairstyles for most of them. And John definitely looks like he has had a facelift. 😂 Did you notice the young girl in the first scene helping with laundry? We never see her again and there are a bunch of theories about her. I also love the hidden Mickeys in the last scene.

When the ride opened in the 70’s, it had a different song. It went “Now is the time, now is the best time of your life.” While they replaced that song with the original song from the World’s Fair, a great big beautiful tomorrow, now is the time can still be heard while riding the peoplemover.

My theory is that they're a family of immortals. John is secretly an alchemist and has shared an elixir of life with his family (and his dog) to experience the wonders of progress. Any subtle changes to appearance or age are caused by how recently they've taken their last dose of the elixir.

There are also hidden Mickeys in this attraction. The one I could see clearly in your video was in the 2000 scene, there is a present right next to grandpa on the floor with Mickey ears on the wrapping paper. I think there is also a stuffed Mickey under the tree, but you can't really see it at your angle in this video.

I forgot that he said that he had an Essex in the twenties scene. I think that may be a holdover or at least a nod to another company that Disney was partnered with at one point.
Essex was Hudson’s budget brand, and Hudson was one of the companies that merged to form AMC in the fifties, which was partnered with Disneyland in its earliest days. They had a showroom in Tomorrowland that showed off the latest Nash, Hudson, and Rambler cars (this was before everything was branded as AMC) and Kelvinator appliances (Kelvinator was owned by Nash at the time of the AMC merger, so it was part of the company too). AMC also provided Disney with some Nash Rambler station wagons (Rambler being a model name on a Nash at that point rather than a stand-alone brand, I know, it’s confusing) for use by park staff. There are pictures of them from when they were digging out the river for the Jungle Cruise, go check them out. They were pretty smart: light blue with a gold top and the Disneyland logo in goldleaf on the sides and rear.
