  • Welcome to Day 5 and 6 of our 32 day adventure in Newfoundland and the East Coast of Canada.
Our base camp for three nights is at the Lomond Campground in Gros Morne National Park. From here each day, we set out to explore the area. On our first morning, we cooked up a delicious egg and sausage skillet and tossed it all in a tortilla wrap to enjoy. After that we packed up a small trail bag with water and picnic supplies, and drove to the Tablelands Trail.
Just driving to the trail head was stunning. There were mountain and ocean views galore with the Tablelands standing out in the distance. The Tablelands are so unique as they stand out from the surrounding green and blue landscape with their bright contrasting orange hue. There is a 2 kilometre hike to the base of the Tablelands with a great lookout platform, right beside a river with some small waterfalls. However, we decided to go exploring a little further and look for a quiet place for a picnic.
This is one of the busier trails in the Park as it is the most stunning, but also identified as an 'easy' trail rating and is a relatively short distance (adventurers are welcome off the main path though and you could make this a more challenging hike up the Tablelands). After finding a lunch spot, we took some time to soak up the sun and take in the sights. Although the landscape is relatively barren, there are some interesting plants to see such as Newfoundlands National flower the Pitcher plant. From the information posters along the trail we also learned we were walking on the earths mantel, which is usually 5 to 50 kilometres below the earths surface!
After our hike we visited the Discovery Centre where we learned about the area. This is probably one of the best information centres we have come across next to the one in Algonquin Provincial Park. There was a ton of, interactive exhibits, beautiful displays, and knowledgeable staff to teach us all about the geology, plant and animal life and indigenous culture. We were also able to get some info about a future trip we want to do (Stay tuned for that!).
The next day we hiked the Lomond River trail near our campsite. However, it wasn't as stunning as the Tablelands trail and we actually opted to hike along the road on the way back instead of the trail. We learned afterwards we should have hiked the Stanleyville Trail which is also connected to the Lomond campground as it is much more scenic. Either way the views from the window of our Woods brand tent were incredible enough and we thoroughly enjoyed walking around the campground and going for a dip in the ocean.
Unfortunately, the Weather Network was calling for some more rain, and we needed to start preparing for the next adventure, so we moved into the communal pavilion at the campground. This has to be one of the best parts of a National Park as these facilities were perfect. There was a wood stove, sinks do do your dishes and picnic tables or benches to relax on. We used the space to spread out all of our backpacking gear and sort it into two small backpacks for our next hike where we planned to spend a night in the backcountry of Gros Morne!

Hey thanks so much for taking the time to comment and leave your kind words. We actually tried to avoid the towns and cities on this trip as we wanted to experience as much of the outdoors as we could, so we did not do the official "Screeching In". However, that just means we will have to go back!

Glad to have relived a bit of our Gros Morne experience from 2022, in your video! We didn't hike the trails you showed in this video. So that was great to see - and we only enjoyed views of the Tablelands from our truck, on route to the Discovery Centre. We loved the info. too, that we learned there! Thanks for sharing your experience!

Aww thanks for checking us out! Even from a truck the tablelands are pretty spectacular! What else did you do in Newfoundland? We are always looking for more ideas for our next visit.

@@Tents.and.Timber I see you folks are from SW ON too! We drove with our travel trailer from ON to NFLD and back, so there's a playlist that shows the individual stops, as well as a video that combines all of it...if you have 2.5 hours that are free this Easter weekend! We stayed outside of St. John's, Terra Nova National Park and Fogo Island. We stayed in Gros Morne for around a week to explore the area. Loved the residents of NFLD. Total trip was about a month. We intend to return too one day, but likely by air...two ferry rides made it extra long and we travel with our camping kitty Miley. And yes, tablelands were indeed spectacular!

@kathleenhiker8361 whoa no way, we spent 21 days on the island and lived out of our car and tent, no trailer. Sounds like we had a very similar trip plan.

I'm disappointed that the tally at the end of the of the video doesn't have a "Beers Crushed" column! After 6 days the tally should be up around 100. 🍻🍻 If not...you're Newfoundlanding wrong 🤣🤣#morebeersmoresheers

Hahaha, beers are unfortunately quite expensive on the island, but we did enjoy some local craft breweries. Is there any other stats we should add?

It was just breath taking when I was there , my cousin starting climbing the mountain and I tried but breathing for me didn’t work well.

It's quite the climb, and the distances are deceiving. At the bottom it doesn't look too far away, but once you start to get close you realize how much of a climb it is. We hope the rest of your trip was good.

Hope there are more episodes to come , our countdown to Newfoundland is now only 124 days away . Will avoid the trail that only scored 1 with just 5 days in Gros Morne . We are also from southern Ontario and driving too so liked the ferry segment previously .

Just so you know, we originally planned for only five days in Gros Morne and ended up staying for seven because we just couldn't get enough. There will most definitely be more videos to come, and we hope you continue to enjoy. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out.

Thanks for the offer , may take you up on that once we see the rest of your NL videos . Splitting our GM stay 3 nights Trout River and 2 in Norris Point as our to do list was longer in the south of the park . Well over 60 so cottage stays are what we do . Want to sea kayak with wild gros morne and limit longer hikes to every other day . Our days of hiking mountains like Cadir Idris (Wales) are sadly over . Darn knees .@@Tents.and.Timber

@@dorisclark298 Love that your still getting out there! 60 cottage stays sounds incredible, you are going to see so much! The tablelands hike is Gros Morne is the flatest trail in the park and also one of the most stunning if your only up for only one. However, if not there are a ton of lookout points along the roads that allow you to pull over and take in some incredible views right from the vehicle.

There should have been a comma after 60 . We are over 60 in age with 5 cottages booked for the 2 weeks we are there . Harbour Le Cou , Lark Harbour , Trout River , Norris Point and Brighton .

I’m about 30 seconds in and I’m guessing you did the tablelands trail. Gros Morne is a mountain that’s been flipped on its side due to tectonic activity so as you walk across the plateau, you can see millions of years of layers that make up our planets crust. It’s literally one of a kind.

You nailed it! We luckily had the opportunity to hike both trails, Gros Morne and the Tablelands trails. Both stunningly beautiful.

I enjoyed the video. Thank you for posting. What is the date (Month, year) of the video. Rain is mentioned; so, I'd like to know. Also, what about biting insects?

    • @Tents.and.Timber

Hey, thanks for check our our video. We spent the first 3 weeks of August driving across the province of Newfoundland. We were told by many locals that we experienced an unusually high amount of rain, but they do experience some unique weather patterns. As far as bugs, it totally depended on location. Heavily forested areas had some biting insects. However, anytime we were near the coastline, which was most of the time, we didn't see many of any bugs. Hope that helps and we hope you have an excellent time. Feel free to reach out with any other questions
